Congressional hearing on transgender discrimination

A conference call previewing an historic Congressional hearing on workplace discrimination based on gender identity will be held Wednesday, June 25th. The call will feature the hearing’s witnesses, leaders from the transgender community, as well representatives from employers that have implemented inclusive workplace policies. Participants will discuss the real and pervasive mistreatment transgender workers face everyday, the role Congress can play in eradicating discrimination based on gender identity, and how corporate America is leading the way toward full equality in the workplace.

The hearing, “An Examination of Discrimination Against Transgender Americans in the Workplace,” will be held on June 26, 2008 before the Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor, chaired by Representative Rob Andrews (D-NJ). The hearing will not focus on any particular piece of legislation, but will be an opportunity to educate Members of Congress on transgender issues and lay the groundwork for congressional action to prohibit arbitrary discrimination. The hearing will also provide an opportunity to highlight employers that are taking the lead and implementing policies for transgender workplace inclusion—from discrimination and benefits policies to internal practices that reflect how gender is expressed and integrated in the workplace.
