African-American
civil rights leaders including Julian Bond and NAACP head Benjamin
Todd Jealous recently condemned a memo written by the National
Organization for Marriage, a group that opposes marriage rights for
same-sex couples.
The confidential document, which was revealed in court
proceedings, advised that the group "drive a wedge between
gays and blacks" as a way to build opposition to marriage equality.
"Pitting bigotry's victims
against other victims is reprehensible; the defenders of justice must
stand together," Bond said
in a statement.
