Dozens arrested at Moscow LGBT demonstrations

June is recognized as Pride Month in the United States but Russian authorities Sunday arrested and detained dozens of people involved in protests demanding the right to hold an LGBT Pride event in Moscow. The protesters reportedly were also met with violence from some religious activists. Homosexuality is not a crime in Russia, but the prevailing anti-gay sentiment in the country has led to crackdowns on LGBT activism, and the national parliament is considering a nationwide ban on pro-equality “propaganda.”

“Your rights aren't safe and you're not physically safe,” said Igor Yasin, who was involved in the protests.
