U.S. puts new same-sex immigration practices in writing

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has instructed immigration officials to consider same-sex partners as falling within the definition of “family" during deportation cases, a step welcomed by advocates for bi-national gay and lesbian couples.

“Until now, LGBT families and their lawyers had nothing to rely on but an oral promise. The administration's written guidance will help families facing separation and the field officers who are reviewing their cases," said Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality.
