Colorado Civil Union Act: It Was Always Worth It

From Brad Clark, Executive Director, One Colorado:

Today, just moments ago, the Colorado General Assembly passed the Colorado Civil Union Act.

Today, because of years of tireless work, our hopes have been fulfilled. Today, because of your unwavering commitment, our families have the respect they deserve.

Now it’s time to say thanks. Click here.

Our journey to this moment hasn’t been easy. It’s been fraught with struggle, with loss, and with sadness. But today we rejoice—as the Colorado House finally joined the Colorado Senate to enact civil unions and give same-sex couples critical legal protections.

The civil unions bill now moves to Governor Hickenlooper’s desk, and he’s promised to sign it into law and provide all committed couples with the tools they need to take care of their families.

Let’s celebrate this historic victory by voicing our appreciation to the lawmakers who made it happen.

Today’s incredible victory is a testament to the dedication of an amazing group of legislators: Senator Pat Steadman, Senator Lucia Guzman, Speaker Mark Ferrandino, and Representative Sue Schafer.

These four leaders have shown their colleagues in the legislature what equality really means—they shared their stories, opened up their lives, and lived the values of true leadership—all to ensure that civil unions passed.

Say thanks to the sponsors of the Colorado Civil Union Act—and to all the legislators who voted “yes.”

To be sure, today wouldn’t have been possible without you. You’ve given your energy, your time, and your dollars. You’ve been there every step of the way, from committee hearings to rallies to government shut-downs.

I can’t thank you enough for giving of yourselves throughout this journey. It wasn’t always easy, but I hope you believe, like I do, that it was always worth it.

P.S. I hope you’ll join me in saying thanks to the lawmakers who have supported our community. Click here to voice your appreciation and ask your friends to do the same.
