States
that have enacted bans on marriage for same-sex couples saw dramatic
increases in psychiatric disorders among their lesbian, gay and bisexual
populations after the bans were put in place, according to a new analysis of large-scale health studies.
"There was a 37% increase in
mood disorders, a 42% increase in alcohol-use disorders, and -- I think
really strikingly -- a 248% increase in generalized anxiety disorders,"
said Mark Hatzenbuehler, a psychologist at Columbia University.
