2013 is a noteworthy year for Colorado as many towns and businesses
recognize their milestone anniversaries. To commemorate these landmark
anniversaries, many have organized celebratory events and activities
ranging from concert series and special giveaways, to ranch competitions
and events showcasing local fare. A sampling of anniversary
celebrations across the state is below. For more information on

- Burlington’s 125th. Join Burlington’s celebration of the town’s 125th
birthday. Numerous activities are set to take place, starting early
June and throughout the summer months, as part of the Birthday Bash,
including the Kahuna Beach Party on July 26, 2013, a Dutch Oven Cook-Off
on August 10, 2013 and a summer-long concert series
featuring musicians The Radios, the Parlor Pickers, Hotel California and
many more.
- Carbondale’s 125th. The town of Carbondale is celebrating its 125th. Potato Day, which falls on September 28, 2013, will be celebrated with a special parade, BBQ and rodeo events.
- Chautauqua’s 115th, Boulder. July 4, 2013 marks the 115th
anniversary of the Colorado Chautauqua, Boulder’s National Historic
Landmark, that sits nestled below the iconic Flatirons. The Dining Hall,
which features the famous wrap-around porch and spectacular views of
the Flatirons, is now open following an extensive overhaul.
Events are set to take place throughout the summer, featuring a special
rendition of “Snow White.” The Colorado Chautauqua is one of only a few
remaining in the U.S.
- Crow Canyon Archaeological Center’s 30th, Cortez.
In 1983, the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center was established to
advance the knowledge and understanding of the human past. As the Center
celebrates its 30th anniversary, Crow Canyon is inviting the
public to Dr. Bill Lipe’s lecture, “Thirty Years of Knowing the
Southwest through the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center.”
The lecture is scheduled for June 13, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Crow
Canyon campus.
- Denver Mountain Parks’ 100th. It
took an Act of Congress for Denver to create its mountain park system.
Today, Denver’s unique parks system includes Buffalo Bill’s Grave,
Winter Park Ski Resort, two buffalo herds and Summit Lake. The goal of
the mountain park system was to make Denver a rival to Switzerland for
mountain tourism. Frederick
Law Olmsted, of Central Park fame, worked on the original design for the
park system, which was completed by his son Rick in 1914.
- Glenwood Springs. Glenwood Hot Springs’ 125th is
taking place this summer. To mark the milestone occasion, the Glenwood
Springs Resort will host a variety of events and activities, including
Strawberry Days on June 20, 2013, and an Independence Day celebration on
July 4, 2013, with cake and special giveaways. Hotel Colorado’s 120th and Glenwood Caverns' 10th anniversaries are also being celebrated this summer.
- The Leland House and Rochester Hotel’s 20th, Durango. The Leland House and Rochester Hotel will celebrate its 20th
anniversary on June 21, 2013 with local food and live music from
Caitlin Cannon and The Artillery. The Leland House and Rochester Hotel
is a small family-owned historic hotel, renovated by mother-and-son
team, Diane Wildfang and
Kirk Komick.
- The Rockies’ 20th Year, Denver. All season long, the Colorado Rockies will be celebrating their 20th
anniversary in a variety of ways, including hosting past Rockies’
players at Coors Field, special player and team events for fans,
bobblehead giveaways and many other special opportunities.
- Steamboat Springs’ 110th. For
110 years, Steamboat Springs has celebrated Independence Day in true
Western fashion. Events, like the Pioneer Days Block Party, are
proof Steamboat's Western roots are alive and well. Don’t miss the
pancake breakfast, a float down the Yampa River, the Pro Rodeo
Series, fireworks and much more.
- Telluride. The Sheridan Opera House 100th anniversary will be honored all year with events, fundraisers and a Speakeasy Gala on July 6, 2013. The Telluride Film Festival’s 40th
year will be celebrated during the week of August 29-
September 2, 2013. To commemorate this special occasion, an additional
day has been added, making room for a five-day bounty of special
programming and festivities. The Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s 40th
promises a magical four days of only-in-Telluride performances June
20-23, 2013, from beloved festival veterans and inspiring new talent,
with sets from Peter Rowan,
Béla Fleck and the "King of Telluride" Sam Bush.
- Triple Bypass Bicycle Ride’s 25th, Evergreen. This bike race, which accommodates 3,500 riders, is celebrating its 25th
anniversary. The traditional ride from Evergreen to Avon is on July 13,
2013 and on July 14, 2013, the ride from Avon to Evergreen. The Triple
Bypass is a 120-mile bicycle tour that travels over Squaw Pass, Loveland
Pass and Vail
Pass.
- Vail’s 50th Anniversary. Join the season-long celebration of Vail Mountain’s 50th
anniversary during the summer of 2013. Guests and locals alike are
invited to join in on the celebration of Vail’s extensive history over
the past 50 years, and all that the next 50 years will bring. Some of
the highlights include: Vail’s 25th International Dance Festival,
taking place July 28- August 10, 2013, Vail America Days Fourth of July
Celebration, KEEN Vail Kids Adventure Race on August 10-11, 2013 and
much more.
Looking Ahead: Anniversaries in 2014
- Red Rocks’ 50th Anniversary of the Beatles’ Concert, Morrison.
2014 is the Golden Anniversary of the Beatles Concert at Red Rocks.
The Beatles were the first rock band to play at Red Rocks, in 1964.
Backstage tours take concertgoers through an underground passageway to
see where dozens of famous rock stars have signed their names.
- Rocky Mountain National Park’s 100th, Estes Park. In
September of 1915, excited visitors and special guests gathered in
Horseshoe Park to celebrate the dedication of America's newest
playground, Rocky Mountain National Park. From September 4, 2014,
through September 4, 2015, Rocky Mountain National Park, along with
local and national communities, will be celebrating the
park's 100th anniversary. Speakers, special activities and community events are being coordinated to commemorate the Centennial.
