Gay man elevated to acting secretary of the Air Force

Eric Fanning has become the first openly gay man to assume the top civilian position in a branch of the U.S. military. Fanning on Friday became the acting secretary of the Air Force after the retirement of Air Force Secretary Michael Donley. Fanning was confirmed by the Senate in April as undersecretary of the Air Force, and is a former board member of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.
