Gay man elevated to acting secretary of the Air Force

Fanning has become the first openly gay man to assume the top civilian
position in a branch of the U.S. military. Fanning on Friday became the
acting secretary of the Air Force after the retirement of Air Force
Secretary Michael Donley. Fanning was confirmed by the Senate in April
as undersecretary of the Air Force, and is a former board member of the
Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.
