Cheney family publicly feuds over marriage equality

A dispute between sisters Mary and Liz Cheney surfaced Sunday when the latter, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Wyoming, made comments that appeared to criticize and distance herself from her lesbian sister.

During an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Liz Cheney called marriage equality "just an issue on which we disagree," leading Mary and her wife, Heather Poe, to accuse her of dishonesty on an issue they say she's supported privately. "To have her now say she doesn't support our right to marry is offensive to say the least," Poe wrote.

The spat led Dick and Lynne Cheney to release a statement Monday that backed up Liz's statements. "Compassion is called for, even when there is disagreement about such a fundamental matter, and Liz's many kindnesses shouldn't be used to distort her position," the statement said, adding that, "Liz has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage."
