Gay man becomes U.S. ambassador to Dominican Republic

The U.S. Senate on Thursday unanimously confirmed James "Wally" Brewster (pictured) to serve as the country's next ambassador to the Dominican Republic, making him the fifth openly LGBT ambassador to be confirmed in 2013

"I was proud to support Wally Brewster's confirmation to be the next U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, and I am pleased that my colleagues in the Senate unanimously agree," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said in a statement after the vote. Brewster recently served as a national LGBT co-chair of the Democratic National Committee.
