Ambassador Samantha Power to Host Roundtable Strategy Session on International LGBT Rights for International Human Rights Day

On International Human Rights Day, U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power will meet with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) advocates from around the world for a roundtable strategy session on ways U.S. foreign policy can align more powerfully with LGBT communities globally to ensure LGBT rights are properly recognized and vigorously protected. The participating activists are in New York sponsored by the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) and the Council for Global Equality (CGE).

At the beginning of the strategy session, Ambassador Power will make opening remarks that speak to the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts inside the UN to combat discrimination against LGBT communities. Joining the Ambassador in making opening remarks will be two international LGBT advocates: Gift Trapence from Malawi, and Masha Gessen from Russia.
