If one wishes to see genocide in action in 2016, all they have to do is google Aleppo.
UNICEF says that children continue to bear the brunt of violence in
Syria and that is evident in what I see coming out of Aleppo. Child
after child being pulled out from rubble, in body bags, being rushed to a
hospital. As I have written many times on Twitter while retweeting
information from Aleppo, it is heart breaking.
In 2004, Aleppo had a population of over two million. Wikipedia says
back then it was the largest, by population, city in Syria. Photos from
before the civil war show a gorgeous city full of life, culture and
history. No more.
In between cries for peace and cease fires, more are killed. More children live with daily terror.
I can’t do the horror that is happening in Aleppo justice here. I cannot
write the words to describe the brutality and terror being experienced
by those who call Aleppo home. There are some great journalists covering
Aleppo, please google Aleppo and read for yourself.
We are living in a time when genocide is happening right in front of our eyes.
The world is watching. This week, the Right Livelihood Awards, known as
the Alternative Nobel Prize, were announced. This year’s winners
included the volunteer rescue group the Syria Civil Defense, known as
the White Helmets. These folks are true heroes, running into the rubble
to save people every day.
I have been searching for an organization to donate to to support those
suffering in Aleppo. Meanwhile, all I can do is to help spread the word.
Will you help me?
