Firehouse Theater's 'The Christmas Spirit' opens this weekend

When the Angel of Death, Jack, arrives at the Dowling home on Christmas Eve, his routine soul collection is derailed when he meets his match in the 72-year-old Long Island widow, Julia. Determined to spend one last Christmas surrounded by her loving family, Julia buys an extra day on earth, extending an invitation to Jack to be her guest for a traditional Christmas dinner. Having never been invited, well, to anything, Jack is intrigued and accepts. What happens next is anything but traditional. Good intentions run amuck as familial buttons get pushed, personalities clash, fuses run short, and buried secrets are revealed. Jack has his work cut out for him juggling the family members to fall in line with the Norman Rockwell ideal that is Julia’s dying wish. With some heavenly support and a hand full of M&Ms, he manages to give Julia the best Christmas gift of all.

“A farce, a romantic comedy, a love story, with a dash of heartwarming insight, The Christmas Spirit is an invitation to embrace family, celebrate life, and rekindle our humanity. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, your heart will grow three times its normal size,” says Director Peter J. Hughes.
