HRC: Dr. Rachel Levine Proves She is More than Qualified to Serve as Assistant Secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization —  urges the U.S. Senate to swiftly confirm Dr. Rachel Levine to be the Assistant Health Secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Levine will become the first openly transgender, Senate-confirmed federal official.

“Today, Dr. Rachel Levine has proven she is more than qualified to serve as Assistant Health Secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,” said Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David. “Levine’s record of accomplishment as a public health leader is unquestionable. At a time when access to health care is a growing crisis for transgender and gender non-conforming people, Dr. Levine has the empathy to understand the health needs of our diverse country and the skillset to improve them. The Human Rights Campaign congratulates Dr. Rachel Levine on her exceptional performance today and urges the United States Senate to swiftly confirm her as Assistant Health Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”

Dr. Rachel Levine is currently the Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Levine joined Governor Tom Wolf’s administration in January 2015 as the Physician General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and served in that role from 2015 to 2017. She was named Acting Secretary of Health in July 2017 and confirmed as Secretary of Health in March 2018.

Dr. Levine is an accomplished regional and international speaker, and author of scholarly and peer-reviewed articles on the opioid crisis, medical marijuana, adolescent medicine, eating disorders, and LGBTQ medicine. Dr. Levine graduated from Harvard College and the Tulane University School of Medicine. She completed her training in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
