Who are the 31 Icons of GLBT History Month 2010?

October is GLBT History Month and every year Equality Forum presents a month's worth of GLBT Icons for your appreciation and edification.

“Equality Forum offers a free GLBT History Month link to organizations, educational institutions, workplace groups, and the public,” stated Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director, Equality Forum. “ The 800% increase in Web traffic in 2009 with over 6 million hits proves the power of GLBT History Month to educate and inspire.”

“This month is an opportunity for schools to acknowledge and celebrate the positive contributions of LGBT people whose identities are absent from history books. Gay-Straight Alliances across the country look forward to this month every year as a way to introduce positive LGBT role models to their members and classmates,” said Eliza Byard, Executive Director, GLSEN.

This year's list of 31 Gay Icons is presented below:

GLBT History Month 2009 is breaking records

GLBT History Month 2009 is generating a record response.

The GLBT History Month 2009 website has received over 1.7 million hits and more than 375 ,000 page views.

Over 600 organizations, educational institutions, corporations and websites (including this one) have a link to GLBT History Month 2009 on their Web sites, making GLBT History Month the largest collaborative project worldwide for our community.

“Since its launch in 2006 with 20 organizations having a GLBT History Month link, the GLBT History Month success confirms that our community and especially our youth want to learn about our role models, history and narratives,” stated Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director, Equality Forum.

“GLBT History Month is so vitally important to LGBT and heterosexual people alike. I highlight the videos and support materials in ways they intersect with the curriculum in various topics (media, arts, business, sports, etc.) with our faculty and students,” says Lis Maurer, Program Director, The Center for LGBT Education, Outreach & Services at Ithaca College.

Dr. Luke Jensen, Director, Office of LGBT Equity at University of Maryland, says, “Efforts like this are so important because of the difficulty we have had historically to understand our communities and therefore ourselves. Very few of us have parents who taught us even some small portion of what it means to be an LGBT person. This project opens our minds, especially those of our youth, to the possibilities of what we may become.”
