Positive Youth - a new documentary from Charlie David on LOGO

Positive Youth is a one hour documentary which follows four HIV affected or infected youth (late teens to 27) in four different North American cities.

Growing up in the 1980s and 90s we were hammered with terrifying statistics of HIV/AIDS. Thirty years in, we are still learning. What education do youth receive now and why is the youth infection rate still the highest?

"We now have the tools to turn things around. Medication plays a key role in prevention and living a long life," said film subject Austin Head. "Medicine is the reason the virus in my system is at undetectable levels. It has eliminated nearly all possibility of transmission to a loved one. There are still a lot of people who don't know they have options and I wanted to be a part of this film to help share that story."

Each of the four doc subjects share a dynamic perspective on the reality of living positive. Medical, psychological and educational experts will also weigh in to provide up-to-date facts and a historical context to the reality of living positively.

"Positive Youth" will air internationally on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. EST on LOGO TV in the United States, along with a soon-to-be-announced broadcast date on OUTtv in Canada. The film will also begin premiering in theaters across North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia, beginning March 30, 2012.

Mondo's makes the cover of HIV Plus

After becoming a fan favorite on season 8 of Project Runway—partly by coming out about his HIV-positive status to the show’s millions of fans—Mondo Guerra turned his newfound fame into a platform. In between launching a jewelry line and competing on Project Runway All Stars, Guerra has emerged as one of the nation’s most high-profile Latino HIV activists. While sewing and designing come naturally to the 33-year-old, Guerra talks to HIV Plus magazine about his new role as an advocate, which also suits him rather comfortably.

“When you get up [to the podium], you feel like people are there to participate, to listen to you, they’re really engaged in what you’re saying,” Guerra tells HIV Plus. “So it’s actually grown quite relaxing.”

Guerra’s decision to put himself out there as a face and voice of HIV was not taken lightly. He knows he’ll likely be referred to as “the HIV-positive designer” for the foreseeable future, but the reception he received after season 8 touched him deeply. He’s also now working with fellow HIV-positive activist and Project Runway alum Jack Mackenroth on the Living Positive by Design campaign, which stresses the importance of a strong mind as well as a strong body.

“After the episode aired [in which he revealed his status], there was so much positive response from so many different people,” Guerra remembers. “A lot of that was from people who were still keeping their status a secret and letting the stigma really define who they were. It was keeping them from being honest. So coming off the show it’s been my responsibility to continue the conversation.”

Since he revealed his status, Guerra’s family has proven both warm and understanding. “My entire family has really stepped up to the plate,” he says. “Now they have put a face to the disease and have sought out the materials to educate themselves. Within my own little family—well, I’m Mexican, so it’s not that little—to see them educate themselves and talk openly about HIV and ask me questions makes me really proud to know that with my community, I’ve made a difference. I hope that continues with my advocacy work.”

Gay in the UK: 1 in 20 HIV+?

Troubling statistics? Or good news that people with HIV are living longer?

Recently released data showed that 3,000 gay men in the U.K. were diagnosed with HIV last year, and that 1 in 11 gay men in London have the virus.

Nationwide, 1 in 20 gay men are infected with the virus.

And this seems like a good time to remind readers that World AIDS Day is tomorrow and that there will be a candelight vigil tomorrow on the west steps of the State Capitol in recognition.

NYC to widen web of AIDS surveillance?

Among a number of proposals that could be controversial, New York City’s health department wants to collect more information on people with HIV and to change state regulations to allow it to more widely use and share that information with doctors and other health departments, according to a prevention plan it filed with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

State Medicaid Director Letter on Coverage and Service Design Opportunities for Individuals Living with HIV

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a State Medicaid Director letter providing guidance to inform States of opportunities to provide Medicaid coverage to individuals living with HIV in support of President Obama’s National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

This guidance informs States on how to apply for opportunities in the Medicaid program that allow for flexibility to improve care and care coordination and offer options to treat individuals living with HIV (including individuals living with AIDS, which refers to individuals living with an advanced stage of the HIV disease) in the community.  States may choose to apply for one or more options to extend coverage to individuals living with HIV: Community First Choice; Health Home for Enrollees with Chronic Conditions; Section 1915(c) Home and Community Based Services Waiver; Section 1915(i) State Plan option; Money Follows the Person Rebalancing Demonstration; and Section 1115 Demonstrations.

These coverage and service design opportunities may assist States in increasing access to care for individuals living with HIV, provide alternatives that could alleviate the current burden to AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP), and help States make progress towards expanding coverage and providing access in accordance with the Affordable Care Act requirements.
