Pet Portraits By Maurice Becnel

Says Becnel, "Painting animal portraits, for me, is more fun than it is work. I began painting them several years ago. The first one I did was for a friend on her birthday. Because it was a gift it never dawned on me that other people would commission me to do more. Word got out and before I knew it more and more of the emails I was receiving from my website were going to the dogs! And cats!"

Denver Dumb Friends League Offers Free Cat Spay and Neuter Surgeries

In honor of World Spay Day on Feb. 25, the Dumb Friends League is offering waived fees for all cat spay and neuter surgeries through its mobile clinics on February 24–25.

The Dumb Friends League will have two mobile clinics available at Denver Animal Shelter, 1241 W. Bayaud Ave., February 24–25, and is one of four participating metro Denver animal welfare organizations offering reduced or waived fee spay and neuter clinics to the public in support of World Spay Day.

“Our goal in collaborating with other local organizations is to make spay and neuter clinics more accessible to more people,” said Tracy Koss, operations outreach manager at the Dumb Friends League. “As a community, we’re actively working together to combat pet overpopulation, ultimately reducing the number of homeless pets in shelters.”

World Spay Day is an international campaign that shines a spotlight on spaying and neutering to help save the lives of companion animals. The campaign promotes spay/neuter as a simple, humane and effective way to curb pet overpopulation and reduce the number of homeless pets in the United States and abroad.

Nice to See StevieB: Coffee Break

By StevieB

Let me just say, there is stress that happens before any big trip. The planning, the packing, fake 'n bake visits, and the wondering if you have enough tank-tops... It's stressful. I had attempted to start the packing process yesterday, but that process was quickly halted this morning.

In Fuzzy's sleep deprived state, he had left a half-full cup of Starbucks on his night stand. This is strictly firbidden in our house hold. This is due to past experiences when the dog has helped himself to the forgotten/forbidden fruit.

This morning as I entered our office to toss one more item into my suitcase, I found to empty cup. In the middle of my suitcase. Harley, the precious, had pulled everything off the nightstand to get to the coffee. He couldn't get the lid off, so he forced his tongue into the little hole in order to get coffee out. At one point, it seems, his tongue got stuck. Hilarity ensued. As the dog chose to stand atop my suitcase to remove his tongue. The contents of the coffee is now in my suitcase. And, the dog is ramped up on caffeine.

Dumb Friends League Pledges for Pets Telethon

Chris Parente and Friend
Sit … Stay … Watch … and make a pledge to support homeless pets at the Dumb Friends League on Sunday, Jan. 26. Tune in to the 16th annual Pledges for Pets Telethon, sponsored by Hill's Science Diet, on FOX31/KDVR from noon to 5 p.m.

During the five-hour live broadcast, viewers will hear heartwarming adoption stories, as well as meet dozens of adoptable pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits and other small pets.

“Animal lovers will see the many ways the Dumb Friends League helps pets, horses and people in our community,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO. “They’ll also see how their donations can make a life-changing difference for thousands of homeless animals that come into our care every year.”

The Dumb Friends League hopes to raise more than $300,000 during this year’s telethon. The funds raised will help provide loving care and vital services for thousands of cats, dogs and other small animals, as well as abused and neglected horses at the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center. A private, nonprofit organization, the Dumb Friends League spends $25,121 a day on companion animal services, including $7,965 daily on veterinary care in our shelters and on our two mobile clinics. An additional $2,017 a day is spent on equine services, including veterinary care, feed, rehabilitation and training for the animals at the equine center.

“Any dollar amount—whether it’s a one-time or monthly contribution—will have a direct impact on the pets and people that count on us each and every day,” said Rohde.

Last year, 16,885 animals were adopted to new homes or returned to their owners by the Dumb Friends League. The organization also offers other critical services, including lost and found, humane education, behavior training, foster care, animal cruelty investigations and spay/neuter surgeries at reduced fees (subsidized by Dumb Friends League donors) for pets in underserved areas.

The Pledges for Pets Telethon will be hosted by FOX31 on-air talent, including Brooke Wagner, Kirk Yuhnke, Chris Parente, Ken Clark, Jennifer Broome, Chris Tomer, Shaul Turner, Chris Jose, Shanna Mendiola and Dan Daru. Denise Plante and Murphy Huston of KOSI 101 will also help emcee the telethon.

The Gay Vegans: Our newest family member!

By Dan Hanley

This past Monday we adopted our newest family member, Rose! We are so excited!

Rose was rescued during a raid on a puppy mill. For seven years all she has been used for is to produce puppies. We know her life was terrible because her skin is in bad shape, she is very skittish (definitely has been hit) and had to have all of her teeth pulled.

Rose is a total love. She is slowly getting used to us and is seeming less fearful every day. Since arriving, she has slept next to my head every night.

We got to meet her last Friday night. It was a surprise for Mike as I told him I wanted to take him somewhere. He had no idea it was to meet a sweet Yorkie at the Denver Dumb Friends League. Within ten minutes of arriving she was on Mike's lap and a few minutes later on mine. We loved her already. Since she hadn't been spayed yet and needed the dental surgery, we had to wait. Perhaps a week.

Monday morning we chatted and were wondering about her. I told Mike I'd call at 11:00am when they opened. They called me at 9:00am and told me to come get her.
Mike was there when they opened.

We were reminded of all of the challenges that puppy mill rescues go through. We already knew all that because of past fosters. No challenge was going to keep Rose from us.
I'm sure you'll hear all about Rose as she settles in. More to come for sure.

Thanks for reading. And if you don't know about puppy mills, please Google them and find out about these horrible places that only exist because people buy puppies at pet stores.

The Gay Vegans: Our First-Ever Dog and Cat Food Drive!

By Dan Hanley

I am ecstatic to let you all know that The Gay Vegans are having our first ever dog and cat food drive! After a lot of consideration around who we would support with a blog-wide effort and how, we have decided to collect dog and cat food as well as cash for Animal Haus, a local Denver non-profit that gives away dog and cat food to those who would otherwise not be able to fee their companion animals.

The great thing about this effort is that you do not need to live in Denver to support us. We will have collection spots for you and your friends to drop off the food, and those who want to support us who do not live n the Denver area can simply go to this website animalhaus.org and make a donation. A little goes a long way.

I know that through the support of our blog readers and supporters that we can make a HUGE difference for those struggling with finances to care for their companions. Imagine what a difference a donation of food makes to a guardian who is experiencing really tough financial times, and in some cases might even be considering bringing their beloved into a shelter!

WE can make the difference.
