The Gay Vegans: Accepted violence at animal non-profits
By Dan Hanley
We all have our favorite animal non-profit. Whether that is our local pound or a far-away animal sanctuary whose work we love and respect, most of us financially support groups that are helping animals in some way.
In Colorado we have a variety of such groups. They are a diverse lot, many companion animal groups saving the lives of mostly dogs and cats, some with huge operations and smaller ones with all volunteer fosters. I have worked with and/or fostered animals for many of these groups. I love that there are so many organizations here working to end animal cruelty and working to support companion animals who have been abused.
As a side note, the first time I met a cow, and fell in love with pigs, was at a sanctuary here in Colorado, one that is no longer around. I remember loving on the cow and being a little surprised about how big she was. And strong. And how much she loved it when I scratched her neck.
So many organizations. So many wonderful people working against animal cruelty.
Several months ago an activist friend of mine asked me if I would help with asking a local animal shelter to stop serving meet at their fundraising dinners. It is a fundamental problem that I have always thought about: Why do I have to order a vegan-specific meal at a fundraiser for a group whose mission is to end violence towards animals and to love and support animals? My point being that, in my head, all of these groups would of course be serving only vegan meals at their fundraisers.
I passed on helping for the same reason that I have passed on other actions: time. I have never in my life felt as crazy busy as I feel now. It has a lot to do with my day job, a job I am hugely passionate about, but nonetheless I simply do not have time to jump onto another campaign.
And I haven't stopped thinking about it.

Judge affirms marriage equality in Wyoming
A federal judge last Friday ruled that state officials in Wyoming cannot block same-sex marriages after the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers Wyoming, ruled in favor of marriage equality. Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead announced later the same day that the state would not appeal.
Arizona marriage ruling will stand
Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne on Friday announced that his office will not appeal a ruling against the state's marriage equality ban, leading a number same-sex couples in the state to seek marriage licenses.
Horne said in a press conference that both he and Gov. Jan Brewer agreed that appealing the decision would be a waste of state resources. "I have decided not to appeal today's decision, which would be an exercise in futility," Horne said.

Nice to See StevieB: This Grill Is On Fire
By StevieB
On Saturday night I found myself out on a date. A date that ended up in a cozy booth at my favorite place to dine; The Denver Diner in downtown Denver. A ginger bearded boy and I sat in a corner booth dining on pancakes. A scene right out of a gay Rockwell painting. It was the perfect step on a great night out. We sat and judged the endless supply of parading women, drunk and spent from partying in their tiny skirts and 6" heels. As I stared dreamily into my table mates deep blue eyes I heard screaming from the kitchen. "Get out!!!! Fire!!! Everyone out!!!!" I looked over to see the entire grill engulfed in flames. Leaving my pancakes, but grabbing my bearded boy, I attempted to beat out the murder of drunk girls, as I would assume they would be too slow in there cheap heels to make it to the door.*
As I escorted my date to the front door, I did have the head about me to bust into a rendition of one of Alicia Keys' songs. I blurted out,
"it's just a grill and it's on fire!"
"THIS GRILL IS ON FIRE!!!!"
There is no more proud moment in my life.
*The news reported that no whoreish girls were harmed in the fire. My pancakes were; however, a total loss.

Rule barring federal contractors from LGBT discrimination finalized
Federal contractors would be barred from LGBT discrimination under a rule that has gone to the Office of Management and Budget for review after being finalized by the Department of Labor. The rule stems from an executive order signed by President Barack Obama in July. Once reviewed by the OMB, the final text will be available in the Federal Register.
HRC Criticizes Catholic Hierarchy’s Removal of LGBT-Inclusive Language from Final Synod Report
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) recently criticized the decision by the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops to eliminate language that was inclusive and supportive of LGBT Catholics from the conference’s final report.
"Once more members of the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church have erred on the side of hypocrisy and fear," said Lisbeth MelĂ©ndez Rivera, HRC Foundation's Director of Latino/a and Catholic Initiatives. “The deeply entrenched anti-LGBT forces within the Church prevailed, ignoring Pope Francis’ message of inclusion and respect, and fundamentally rejecting the voices and lives of LGBT Catholics.”
A preliminary version of the report, which was made public just days ago, asserted that LGBT people have “gifts and talents to offer the Christian community,” and, for the first time, referred to LGBT couples as “partners” instead of sinners. The interim report also stated that while the Church did not view gay unions as on the “same footing as matrimony between a man and a woman,” it went on to say that "[w]ithout denying the moral problems connected to homosexual unions it has to be noted that there are cases in which mutual aid to the point of sacrifice constitutes a precious support in the life of the partners." That language was not included in the final report released today, an indication that those provisions failed to garner the two-thirds support of those who were eligible to vote on the document.
This disappointing setback comes at a time when many in the U.S. Catholic hierarchy continue to use heartless and derogatory language in referring to the LGBT faithful, while Pope Francis encourages a more compassionate approach.
"While we are extremely disappointed that the Bishops were unable to be moved away from doctrinal purity and into pastoral care for LGBT people, as suggested by Pope Francis, we remain hopeful that as a working document, this report will be once more amended in our favor at next year's Synod,” Rivera continued. “We were always aware this was the beginning of a discussion, not the end. We will continue to pray for our brothers, the Bishops, to listen to our prayers, and to discern deeply about the exclusionary nature of this document based on the outdated idea that God spoke their final words a millennia ago.”

Denver Restaurant Week To Be One 10-Day Event in 2015
The
extremely popular Denver Restaurant Week (DRW), presented by Lexus and
organized by VISIT DENVER, will revert to a single 10-day long event in
2015, running from Friday, February 20 to Sunday, March 1, 2015.
Bresler stated that registration for restaurants for the 2015 DRW will begin on Monday, November 10 at DenverRestaurantWeek.com.
Participating restaurants will once again offer a multi-course dinner
for the fixed price of $30 per person that was introduced in 2014. The
list of participating restaurants and menus will be announced in
mid-January.
“We
talked to restaurant owners, restaurant employees, diners, sponsors and
restaurant week fans, and the consensus was that seven days of DRW was
too short, but 14 consecutive days was too long,” said Justin Bresler,
vice president of marketing for VISIT DENVER. “The perfect ‘best of both
worlds’ compromise appears to be to run it for 10 days, encompassing
two complete weekends in the traditional slow period of February,” he
said.
For
Denver Restaurant Week’s 10th anniversary in 2014, at the request of
participating restaurants, DRW was split into two separate week-long
events, one in February and one in late August. “While summer restaurant
week was popular with both restaurants and diners, the challenge going
forward was to find a week that wasn’t already occupied by an existing
event, holiday or a week that didn’t have a major convention,” Bresler
said.
Late
summer and fall are Denver’s busiest convention months. “We really
don’t want to bring 10,000 convention delegates to Denver and have them
find that every restaurant is booked with DRW reservations,” Bresler
said, adding that the restaurants also don’t want to be offering special
DRW pricing at a time when there are thousands of hungry convention
delegates in town.
“In
the end, we couldn’t find workable dates for the summer event, and the
consensus of opinion was to concentrate on the traditional February time
frame,” Bresler said.
More
than 300 restaurants participated in the 2014 winter DRW and more than
200 in the summer DRW, making this one of the largest culinary
celebrations in the nation.
