"LGBT people of color and transgender people often face unique barriers to serving as public officials, which is why they are still vastly underrepresented in government," said Torey Carter, Victory's interim executive director. "This fellowship is the beginning of a focused effort to change that."
"Everybody deserves to be recognized for who they are, and gender identity as an expression is one that clearly rises above the rest," said Democratic state Rep. Chris Lee, who plans to introduce a bill that would update the law. Currently, six states and the District of Columbia do not mandate gender reassignment surgery as a prerequisite for gender changes.
Kern, who once referred to the state's gay community as "an enemy who wants to destroy us," is seeking to defund the entities responsible for giving marriage licenses to same-sex couples, as well as prohibit restrictions on LGBT "conversion therapy" and permit business owners to refuse service to LGBT patrons.
U.S. District Judge Callie Granade on Sunday issued a stay of a ruling striking down Alabama's marriage equality ban, granting a request from the state's attorney general to allow time for an appeal to be filed. The stay will expire Feb. 9 unless the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals extends it.
"As long as a stay is in place, same-sex couples and their families remain in a state of limbo," Granade wrote. "In its discretion, however, the court recognizes the value of allowing the Eleventh Circuit an opportunity to determine whether a stay is appropriate."

He reached the heights of stage and screen, was married for 24 years and proudly raised two children. But for decades, Joel Grey kept one aspect of himself decidedly out of the spotlight.
While it's not a secret to his friends and family, the entertainer's never spoken about it publicly before. "All the people close to me have known for years who I am," Grey tells PEOPLE. "[Yet] it took time to embrace that other part of who I always was."
It was different for a man of his generation. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of noted actor-comedian Mickey Katz, Grey remembers "hearing the grownups talk in the next room, my mother included, talking derisively about 'fairies' and men being dragged off to jail and even worse for being who they were."
At about the same time, he says, "I came to realize, along with being attracted to girls, I had similar feelings for boys."
Grey didn't reveal his truth for many more years to come.
He was married to actress Jo Wilder for 24 years, a period he calls "the happiest of my life." Together they have two children: actress Jennifer Grey and son James, a chef.
"I feel very happy for my dad that he has come to a point in his life where he feels safe and comfortable enough to declare himself in a public way as a gay man," Jennifer tells PEOPLE. "Mostly because the more people are free to own their true nature and can hopefully come closer to love and accept themselves as they really are, no matter what age, no matter how long it takes, to finally be free of the lies or half truths, it is freedom."
Now after more than seven decades in the spotlight, Grey looks back fondly on the magic he made on stage and screen. His favorite leading ladies feel the same.
"He is so alive and such a force on stage," says his Cabaret costar Liza Minnelli. "It was just tops working with him."
Close friend Bernadette Peters, with whom he starred in the musical George M!, agrees. "He won an Oscar and a Tony for his iconic role in Cabaret, and now he's at an interesting time in his life," she says. "He can look at how he's lived and how he can impact other people. It's a whole attitude towards life and his is one of joy."
Now a passionate photographer (two of his works hang in the Whitney Museum in New York City), Grey's next photo book will come out later this year, as will his upcoming memoir.
He also loves the new fans he's made thanks to later turns in Private Practice and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
"Teenage girls stop me on the street," says Grey. "I'm a very happy guy. I'm still cookin'."
Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, announced a partnership with award-winning children’s musicians Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, who will dedicate a portion of proceeds from their new album to the HRC Foundation’s unique Welcoming Schools program.
The duo will also debut its latest CD, “Dancin’ In The Kitchen,” which celebrates diverse families, with a performance February 28th in the Equality Center at HRC’s Washington D.C. headquarters. Through direct work with educators, and a curriculum that addresses family diversity, bullying and LGBT inclusion, HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program helps ensure that elementary schools make all students, with all kinds of families feel welcomed and supported.
“My children grew up with Cathy and Marcy's music, so I'm especially delighted that we will be working with them to make their songs a powerful part of our expanding Welcoming Schools efforts,” said Ellen Kahn, director of the HRC Foundation’s Children, Youth & Families program. “Their music and message will resonate with a whole new generation of families, including and especially LGBT families.”
The new album, the married duo’s 44th, celebrates diverse families, including one-parent and two-parent households, grandparents raising their grandchildren, LGBT parents, extended and blended families, mixed-race families, and LGBT children. Their songs reflect the growing diversity of family structures around the world, and highlight the reality that families are bound by love.
“This project has been in the works for a long time,” said Cathy Fink. “While we have produced many themed recordings for families, this one is very special and particularly timely.” Fink and Marxer say the album’s title song, “Dancin’ in the Kitchen,” was inspired by parties and gatherings they’ve hosted during which everyone invariably ends up in the kitchen.
