Comprehensive New LGBT Non-Discrimination Legislation To Be Introduced This Week

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization, released the following statement following a report from Buzzfeed News late last night that comprehensive federal LGBT non-discrimination legislation is expected to be introduced in Congress later this week.

“No one in our community should be at risk of being fired, evicted from their home, or denied services because of who they are or whom they love," said HRC President Chad Griffin. "There is an unacceptable patchwork of state-level protections for LGBT people, and more than half of LGBT Americans live in a state that lacks fully-inclusive non-discrimination laws. The time has come in this country for full, federal equality, and nothing less. A federal non-discrimination bill would create permanent and clear protections to ensure that all employees are hired, fired or promoted based on their performance. All LGBT Americans deserve a fair chance to earn a living and provide for their families.”

In March, polling conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner for the Human Rights Campaign revealed that an overwhelming majority of likely voters (69 percent) support a federal LGBT non-discrimination law, including 72 percent of Independents and 51 percent of Republicans. The poling also revealed that nearly two-thirds of LGBT Americans (63 percent) have faced discrimination in their lives, with LGBT people reporting workplace discrimination the most frequently experienced form of discrimination.

Top Experts to Testify on Federal Restrictions Holding Back Medical Marijuana Research

On Thursday, July 23rd Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is hosting a Congressional Briefing with Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) on federal barriers faced by researchers working to understand the medical uses of marijuana. The briefing will provide expert testimony on how federal policy has undermined medical marijuana research, the state of contemporary medical marijuana research and the impact of reform proposals.

Dr. Sue Sisley will present testimony on how federal barriers have directly blocked her research on using marijuana to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder including the adverse impacts of the Drug Enforcement Agency licensing only one entity (National Institute on Drug Abuse) to grow the federal research supply of marijuana. Dr. David Casarett, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and author of the recently published book, Stoned: A Doctor’s Case for Medical Marijuana will discuss contemporary medical marijuana research. The final speaker will be John Hudak, fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institute and Managing Editor of the FixGov blog. Mr. Hudack will be discussing the often misunderstood impact of moving marijuana to a different schedule classification under the Controlled Substances Act.

“With prominent members of Congress calling for more research on medical marijuana, it’s time we start hearing from experts about how to make increased medical marijuana research a reality,” said Steph Sherer ASA Executive Director. “These experts can tell us first hand how the federal government’s policies undermine research and how reforms like the CARERS Act can move this essential medical research in area forward.”

Let's work together to change the future of HIV/AIDS by talking about testing, PrEP and staying in care.

Since talking about HIV in the heat of the moment can be a buzz kill, why not bring it up before you get it up? By bringing it up, everyone wins.

Lambda Literary Opens Submissions Period for the 28th Annual Lambda Literary Awards

Lambda Literary has announced the opening of the submissions period for the 28th Annual Lambda Literary Awards (Lammys). Entering their 28th year, the Lammys honor books in more than twenty genres ranging from literary fiction and poetry to speculative fiction, graphic novels and memoir.

"As the most comprehensive LGBTQ book awards, the Lammys ensure that LGBTQ stories are recognized and retold as part of the literature of the world," said Lambda Literary Award Administrator Kathleen DeBold.

Books submitted for consideration in this Lammys cycle must be published between January 1st and December 31st, 2015 and meet the Lammys Submission Guidelines. Finalists will be announced in March 2016 and Lammy Awards will be presented at the annual Lambda Literary Awards gala planned for early June of 2016 in New York City.

Lambda Literary is, for the first time, adding the Lammy category of Transgender Poetry in response to the growth in the genre.

"Poetry is the byway through which the lyricism of our crucial emotional and intellectual interior lives can be fully realized," said William Johnson, Lambda Literary Managing Editor who has been working closely with Trans poets and publishers to establish this new Lammy category. "By offering a Trans Poetry Award, Lambda Literary affirms the importance of poetry as a literary form that offers dynamic insights into our genuine selves, as well as the vital significance that these insights play in our ongoing cultural conversation."

The Lammys celebrate the best in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender literature and honor groundbreaking work by members of the LGBT literary community. Since its inception in 1989, Lambda Literary has awarded more than 525 Lammys to outstanding authors including Dorothy Allison, Edmund White, Cherrie Moraga, Leslie Feinberg, Samuel R. Delany, Kate Bornstein, Armistead Maupin, Rita Mae Brown, John Waters and Hilton Als.

The revised guidelines and online submission form are available on the Lambda Literary website. The submission period will close on December 1, 2015.
