Elliot Moss - Big Bad Wolf

For his latest track, "Big Bad Wolf," Elliot Moss teamed up with Brooklyn Filmmaker Maria Juranic, Minneapolis Director Ryan Kron Thompson, and a slew of other Minneapolis based videographers to create what Nowness is calling, "a slick commentary on the horror and banality of incarceration."

It's Coming, Sweetie Darling! Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London's trendiest hotspots. But, blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more!

The Gay Vegans: Taking Action

By Dan Hanley

I have always thought that if something bothers me, I need to take action to change it.

This thought pattern is up front and center every day while I drive around Los Angeles. Yes, I'm paying attention to the political race, the state-sponsored bigotry in states like Mississippi and North Carolina, racism, the hungry and the homeless and the huge amount of kids living in poverty in the US to name a few.

Yet one thing that I come across constantly and feel like I do have the power to change is the vast amount of litter throughout LA. No matter where I drive, I see it.

Not that big of a deal? Maybe not. Some would say there is nothing I can do, that in a county where there are close to 11 million people, there is going to be litter.

To accept this would mean that I would need to think that most people who live here don't give a shit. They don't give a shit about litter that makes an area look terrible and litter that has an affect on the environment and wildlife.

From my favorite beach to hiking trails, entrances to the highway and along the street in whichever part of the city I might be driving in, litter is everywhere.

As I think of this and of everything else there is going on in the world, I think of little victories. What does a little victory around litter look like? Maybe seeing the flowers on the side of the road instead of litter. We are in southern California after all where there is an abundance of natural beauty. Maybe it's watching the dolphins of of Zuma beach knowing that the bag of litter we cleaned up that morning was not going to make it into the ocean. By the way, the Algalita Foundation here in SoCal estimates that 80% of marine debris comes from human activities on land! Maybe it's being at the on ramp cleaning up litter just to show others that, like them, there are people who give a shit about where they live.

I see myself making a trip to Home Depot for garbage bags and gloves. Nothing ever changes if we don't take action.

As I create a plan on what I can do to clean up LA, remember that there is metaphorical litter everywhere. From you state legislature to city hall to those who torture animals and spread hate among humans, there is enough of that type of garbage out there to keep us all busy.

Take action.

Nice To See StevieB: Moving On

By StevieB

It’s been fun. No, really is been a lot of fun.

Mike and I moved in together on May 16th 2015. If you are a longtime reader of my blog, you know this move was a major change in my life. I ended a nine-year relationship, and was throwing off the binds that a toxic relationship can wrap around your soul. Suddenly I was free. It wasn’t on the level of Celie gaining freedom in The Color Purple, but for me, it felt like that.

We will soon be in our current apartment for a year. This is the place I had in my mind every night when I dreamed of escaping an unhealthy relationship. My vision of peace. All that time, painting in my mind how my own place would look like, how it would feel. Now, a year has passed, and the escape is just a memory. It is now the time for the roommate and I to move on with our lives. We have learned a lot in one year. The best lesson is how well we get along. Suddenly we were best friends, and most beneficial critics.

After a drama-filled search we have chosen a new apartment. The only thing we did not like about the current place is how far away it is from the city-center. The new place is close to downtown. Literally across the street from the train line, and a station. The only bad news is that we can’t move in until the end of June. I mean, our current lease is not over until the end of June, but I can’t wait for the new place.

I however, am already missing the feeling of the current place. It feels like Miss Celie, after leaving the farm gets a swanky apartment where she can do whatever she wants; whenever she likes. Now it is time to move on. Yes, the new place will be better. Yes, I’m now dating a wonderful and caring guy. It’s a simple matter of a chapter closing. For many years I dreamt of my own home. I imagined how it would feel. Now, we move on. It’s funny; life. If you live long enough, you’ll do everything.

Because it was a gift it never dawned on me that other people would commission me to do more. Word got out and before I knew it more and more of the emails I was receiving from my website were going to the dogs! And cats!"

5 Important Factors to Know about the LGBTQ Community and Suicide Prevention

By Steve Johnson

There are warning signs of suicide to be aware of for everyone, but there are certain factors that make suicide prevention even more crucial for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) community. Because people who identify as LGBTQ are more likely to have difficulty with violence and rejection at home, school, and other environments, LGBTQ community members are at an increased risk for suicidal thoughts and actions. Several studies show that LGBTQ youth are at a higher risk for suicide than their heterosexual peers. That’s why it is critical to know these five important factors about the LGBTQ community and suicide prevention.

1. Suicide is the Leading Cause of Death for LGBTQ Youth in America
The American Medical Association makes the risk for LGBTQ youth suicide clear: it is the leading cause of death for these youths in America. While the issue is gaining attention and more resources are becoming available to help the LGBTQ community across the nation, some states are enacting laws that essentially legalize discrimination against them. This lack of understanding from their communities puts these youths at a higher risk for committing suicide.

2. Accepting, Supporting Home Environments Make a World of Difference in Suicide Prevention for the LGBTQ Community
When it comes to suicide prevention, it is important to provide members of the LGBTQ community with safe and supportive environments. It is critical that LGBTQ youths have accepting families that nurture and understand them. As a result, these young people are much less likely to attempt suicide. On the other hand, those who don’t receive love and support from their own families become depressed, confused, and hopeless. In fact, LGBTQ youths from unsupportive families are 8.4 times more likely to attempt suicide than their supported peers.

3. Harassment, Abuse, and Violence Increase the Likelihood of LGBTQ Suicide
Other studies have found that LGBTQ youth who were victimized in middle and high school “show impaired health as they begin adulthood including depression, suicide attempts that require medical care, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and risk for HIV.” That is why it is so important for members of this community to feel as though they are accepted and safe outside of their homes. Sadly, they are much more likely than their heterosexual peers to experience high levels of bullying and victimization. As a result, LGBTQ youths are 2.5 times more likely to inflict self-harm.

Dr. Stephen Russell explains: “We now have evidence of the lasting personal and social cost of failing to make our schools safe for all students. Prior studies have shown that school victimization of LGBTQ adolescents affects their health and mental health. In our study we see the effects of school victimization up to a decade later or more. It is clear that there are public health costs to LGBTQ-based bullying over the long-term.”

4. The LGBTQ Community Has Higher Rates of Addiction
There also is a higher rate of alcoholism and addiction among the LGBTQ community than among heterosexuals. LGBTQ teens that experience family rejection often become homeless and turn to drugs. The depression that stems from rejection is a major factor in the substance abuse, in which alcohol and illegal drugs are used to self-medicate.

Substance abuse has been shown to increase the likelihood that a person will take his own life, as addicts are nearly six times more likely to commit suicide than the general population. Addicts experiencing suicidal thoughts may use alcohol or drugs as the means for committing suicide. When considering all of the risk factors that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning people face, it is no wonder that their rates of addiction and suicide are higher.

5. Gay and Bisexual Men Have a Higher Rate of Suicide
In the United States, men are nearly four times more likely to commit suicide than women, and male suicide represents 79% of all U.S. suicides. Gay and bisexual men are at an even greater risk for suicide attempts, especially before the age of 25, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Gay and bisexual men also are at a greater risk of experiencing intimate partner violence than heterosexual men. This abuse and violence leads to higher rates of suicide, which also puts gay and bisexual men at an overall greater risk.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States for all ages. While several factors contribute to people’s reasoning for suicide, there are five important factors about the LGBTQ community that put them at a higher risk. Being aware of these factors can help LGBTQ community members’ friends and loved ones offer support and reinforce prevention.

Jennifer Hudson and Harvey Fierstein Announced for NBC's Hairspray Live!

Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG and Grammy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson and multiple Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein will headline the cast of NBC’s “Hairspray Live!,” the network’s next live Broadway musical holiday event following the phenomenal success of “The Wiz Live!”

Also joining the creative team will be acclaimed television director Alex Rudzinski, who received extraordinary reviews for his television direction of “Grease Live!” Rudzinski was also the TV director for “Dancing With the Stars” from 2005-14.

“We are beyond thrilled with this incredibly talented duo of stars for ‘Hairspray Live!,’” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “Harvey Fierstein created the role of Edna Turnblad on Broadway in an indelible Tony-winning performance that demanded to be memorialized on film, and we’re happy he wanted to step into her shoes one last, unforgettable time. We’re also so grateful that the incomparable Jennifer Hudson will play Motormouth Maybelle and we know her rendition of ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’ will literally stop the show.”

Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, “Hairspray Live!” takes place in 1962 Baltimore. Teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on “The Corny Collins Show,” a local TV program. When, against all odds, Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; an African-American boy she meets in detention, Seaweed; and his mother, Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a local record store. Tracy’s mother is the indomitable Edna Turnblad, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white “Corny Collins Show.”

Harvey Fierstein, who is also writing the teleplay, will play Edna Turnblad, a role he created and won a Tony Award for in the stage version of “Hairspray.” The quintessential Edna, Fierstein portrayed the character for the show’s first two years of its seven-year run at the Neil Simon Theatre on Broadway.

As an actor, he is a member of an elite group who have won Tonys as Best Actor in a Musical (“Hairspray”) and Best Actor in a Play (for his own “Torch Song Trilogy”). As a writer, Fierstein won Tonys for “La Cage Aux Folles” and “Torch Song Trilogy,” and received three more Tony nominations for writing “Kinky Boots,” ”Newsies” and ”Casa Valentina.” His adaptation of “Funny Girl” is currently running, along with “Kinky Boots,” in London.

“Hairspray Live!” will air Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will originate from Los Angeles.
