OUT on DVD/VOD: Downriver

Breaking Glass Pictures will release their latest LGBT title DOWNRIVER on VOD and DVD August 23, 2016. Reminiscent of Winter's Bone, DOWNRIVER is a chilling mystery from award-winning writer/director Grant Scicluna that courageously deals with loss, identity, trauma, and hard-won redemption.

James (Reef Ireland) has just been released from prison after serving time for drowning a little boy when he himself was just a child. The boy's body was never found, and James, guilt-ridden and still haunted by questions about what really happened that day, returns to the rural community where the crime took place and undertakes a quest to find the body. Along the way, he is confronted by bullies and sexual predators from his past, and the punishment he risks by breaking parole now pales next to the threat of violence from the shadowy characters emerging all around him.

Are You an LGBT Elder?

Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is a member of the Diverse Elders Coalition, a national coalition formed to ensure that policymakers hear the needs and perspectives of elders when and where it matters. This coalition advocates for policies and programs that improve aging for American Indian/Alaska Native elders, Asian American and Pacific Islander elders, Hispanic elders, LGBT elders, and other racially and ethnically diverse older adults.

The federal government’s Administration on Community Living (ACL) just released a plan for how to make sure that elders with the greatest social need receive the services they require — and the plan expressly acknowledges that diverse elders may be among those eligible for increased resources.

After releasing this plan, the ACL asked for feedback from the public — but we don’t have much time to act. Comments must be submitted to the ACL before August 22!

Click the link and answer the questions there to make sure the ACL wants to hear from you, and the more personal your story, the better. Tell the ACL why you need them to take action today.

Mipso - Momma

Today, North Carolina’s Mipso premiered the official video for “Momma,” off of their current album Old Time Reverie via TheBoot.com. The album, which was released last fall, is now available for fans to purchase on 180-gram vinyl. The song, written by Jacob Sharp, was inspired by the emotions of losing his mother to cancer. Of the video, Jacob states, “… the moment where the absence of your most loved one no longer dominates your day to day. For me, it’s simultaneously the most unsettling and comforting part of the mourning process, and this video tries to show that nuance.”

The Feline Fix - Caring for Colorado's Community Cats

More than 20,000 cats are euthanized annually in Colorado simply because there are not enough homes for them all. Unfortunately, we can't simply adopt our way out of the problem.

An unaltered female cat, tame or feral, may become pregnant as early as five months of age and bear two to three litters per year for her entire life; which for a feral cat is roughly five years.

The purpose of Divine Feline and it's clinic, The Feline Fix, is to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless cats and to promote the health and welfare of all cats, feral and tame, through the practice of providing quality and affordable spay and neuter services and the practice of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).

Meet Stonewall Fitness' David Smith

My heaviest weight
My name is David Smith. My passion is in fitness, exercise and nutrition, I also have an interest in LGBT history and the community! In the summer of 2008 I hit a low point in my life, with no direction or guidance, my only priorities were finding a good job and boyfriend.

This led me down spiraling path of depression and binge eating that led to me being officially classified as "obese". With no friends, no boyfriend, no goals, no real reason to wake up in the morning and a big belly, I had a moment of realization.

When the 2008 Olympics took place sat, eating cake and watched all these amazing athletes and people reach high, push themselves and accomplish their goals and dreams, I quickly realized that's what I want to do, I want to be an Olympic Athlete. I decided that there was no reason why I couldn't be, I could see myself on the other side of that television to be there, realizing my goals and dreams. I started to focus more on what I knew, stopping at nothing to accomplish my goals.

Most recently I won 8 medals at the 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland!
By eating basic healthy foods and exercising (swimming) excited and motivated I started down a journey that led, not only to significant weight loss (40lbs in 4 months) but toward a whole new perspective on life.

One of my first big steps was to join a local LGBT Swim Team, the Denver SQUIDS. Since then I have met amazing people, many of whom I call my friends, i've done things and experienced things I never would have thought possible. For the first time in my life I truly felt like I had a purpose and that I belonged within my community, you can almost call it a "second coming out" as I truly did start to blossom, it's been a wild ride ever since.

I am so excited and passionate about Stonewall Fitness, I want to help others truly see all the amazing things life has to offer, with a little bit of passion, motivation and sweat, there is much you can accomplish and I want to help you discover that the way I discovered it myself.

The Gay Vegans: Be Yourself!

By Dan Hanley

There is so much going on in our communities.

With everything going on, it seems many have lost a sense of how to communicate or debate without completely demonizing whoever they disagree with. This is a huge bummer for me, as someone who is always trying to engage with others and to encourage our readers to be a part of the debate. Please remember through all of this, no matter what, to be yourself.

Yes, there are those who will attack you and in some cases even get ugly. Even people you are in relationship with might get a little pissy. We cannot remain silent. And it’s pretty simple to express ourselves without being judgmental or unkind to others. Also, there is no shortage of opportunities to speak out against something that horrifies and speak up for something that we wholeheartedly support.

Turn to politics. It’s vital that we are involved and if we remain silent people who do not value what we value could get elected. Get involved.

With veganism and animal rights there are opinions all over the place as to what that means. If you don’t think promoting cage free eggs or humane meat helps animals who are suffering right now, then say something. If you’ve made a vegan recipe that blew your mind, share it. Support a group that fights for what you believe in and don’t be afraid to speak out for what you believe in. There are so many voices out there, and a lot of noise, so make sure yours is part of that!

Be yourself. Wear a t-shirt that promotes your beliefs. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Promote a link on your social media. Make a donation to a non-profit that matches your values.

The most important thing to me personally is that when you do all of this, do it with kindness, compassion and love. Remember that, especially when expressing your opinions on animal rights and animal cruelty, that you may be the only voice that a suffering animal has. There are times when disrupting and being loud are necessary, but when expressing yourself to people you know and during your day to day life, kindness prevails.

Two Teenagers Murdered, Fourteen Wounded In Florida Nightclub Shooting

Early this morning, two teenagers were murdered outside a nightclub in Fort Myers, Florida during a shooting incident that left at least 14 others wounded. The attack on Club Blu took place as family members picked up club patrons from an event intended for young people between the ages of 12-17.

“Six weeks after the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history at an LGBTQ nightclub, two teenagers were murdered outside another nightclub in Florida. The victims of the Club Blu shooting were kids, high school students, looking to dance, have fun and enjoy life at an event organized as a safe space for young people. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Fort Myers community," said Russell Roybal, Deputy Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund. “While the shooter’s motive is unclear, what remains clear is that gun violence hurts us all in America. We are outraged by the ongoing mass shootings and gun-related homicides that plague America. Congress must act to protect us by passing strong gun control laws.”

The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund is working with a broad coalition of advocates to pass federal gun control legislation. Earlier this month, the organization joined Move.org in presenting Congressman Raúl Grijalva a petition signed by over 1.2 million people calling for the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban.
