The 8th Annual Co-LEADS Student Summit - Justice for the Vote: Electoral Equity in a Diverse Democracy

The Co-LEADS conference was established in 2009 by a group of individuals on the Auraria and DU campuses as a way to bridge discussions of leadership and social justice in a meaningful way. The Summit invites college students from across Colorado to join in discussions of social justice, activism, advocacy, and social change. Throughout the day students participate in a number of workshops that challenge, grow, and inspire them to make change in their own lives and their communities.

This year, the conference will be exploring the theme: Justice for the Vote:  Electoral Equity in a Diverse Democracy. Keynote and breakout sessions will engage self-awareness, social systems, personal skills and collaborative action through this lens.

The keynote this year is Joe Salazar:

Joe Salazar is the representative in House District 31, which includes most of Thornton and parts of unincorporated Adams County. Rep. Salazar is vice-chair of the State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee and also serves on the Judiciary Committee.
Rep. Salazar has spent his entire career making sure the rights of hard-working Coloradans are protected, and has brought that same focus to the legislature. In the 2014 session Rep. Salazar passed legislation that reduced the fees an individual must pay when making a a request for public records under Colorado’s Open Records Act. He also sponsored legislation that prevents individuals with serious mental illnesses from being being placed in long term solitary confinement. Rep. Salazar also sponsored a bill to formally outlaw court-ordered jail time for being unable to pay court fines, a practice that in previous centuries was known as debtors prison.
During the 2013 legislative session, he was co-prime sponsor of a bill that updates Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act, allowing employees to seek damages and attorney’s fees in cases of intentional discrimination or harassment for factors including race, gender and sexual orientation.
Rep. Salazar is a Colorado native whose Spanish and indigenous roots in Colorado and New Mexico go back hundreds of years. He was a civil rights and criminal investigator for the State of Colorado, working for the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies in the civil rights division and division of insurance.
Rep. Salazar left the division of insurance in 2000 to attend law school at the University of Denver College of Law, where he became a founding member of the American Bar Association, Law Student Division, and a member of the Native American Law Student and Latino Law Student Associations. He continued to assist the civil rights division on cases, and in 2001 the State of Colorado awarded him a “Subject Matter Expert” certification in the area of civil rights.
After law school Rep. Salazar started his own firm focusing on cases involving employment law, civil rights, constitutional law and federal Indian law. He has successfully taken on many cases involving employment and constitutional issues, and in 2012 he was recognized by the publication Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in the area of civil rights and constitutional law.
Rep. Salazar’s family has owned farm and ranch land in Colorado’s San Luis Valley and in northern New Mexico for generations. He was four years old when he moved with his parents to Thornton, and grew up as the city grew, attending Woodglenn Elementary, Northeast Junior High School and Thornton High School, where he graduated in 1989.

Nice To See StevieB: Summer Nights

By StevieB

This is my favorite photo of myself. It was taken by my most amazing (and available) roommate, Mike. It was late summer and Mike and I had just illegally launched some Chinese lanterns in the middle of Cheesman Park. It was truly an amazing night. We laughed and joked as we entered the park, close to the parks closing time. But, our tone became more and more reserved as we watched the glowing lanterns drift higher and higher into he night sky. We stood alone in the middle of the darkened park. Witnessing the glowing light of lanterns fade away.

We sat in the grass and watching the full moon (pictured in the photo) slowly come out to join us. In this shot you can see me in my natural habitat. Texting away.

The Toxic Avenger Cleans Up Denver

Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, “The Toxic Avenger” is a charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical that has it all — an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor and two guys who play… well, everyone else … bullies, mobsters, old ladies, and stiletto-wearing back-up singers, plus the show also features the most memorable and unbelievable duet you’ll ever see on any stage.

Melvin Ferd the Third wants to clean up Tromaville, the most polluted town in New Jersey. Foiled by the mayor’s bullies, Melvin is dumped into a vat of radioactive toxic waste, only to reemerge as The Toxic Avenger, New Jersey’s first superhero. Affectionately known as Toxie, our new hero is a seven-foot mutant freak with superhuman strength who is out to save New Jersey, end global warming, and woo the blind librarian in town.

“’The Toxic Avenger Musical’ is born of a cult classic movie, and playfully mocks the cheesy humor of the film, while still enthralling the audience with Broadway-quality music and theatrics,” offers Colin Roybal, Director. “It's a ‘monster’ of a musical, and will keep the audience laughing throughout.”

Denver Outlaws Win 2016 MLL Championship

After a 90-minute weather delay due to lightning in the area, the Denver Outlaws stormed back from an early deficit to win the 2016 MLL Championship, 19-18 over the Ohio Machine at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University. Coca-Cola Championship MVP, attackman Eric Law, scored the game-winning goal with just 13 seconds left in the game. Law finished with 5 goals and 3 assists.

Midfielder Kyle Harrison kicked off the scoring for the Machine to start the game 1-0. The Outlaws and Machine traded goals before the Machine ended the quarter on a four-goal run to extend their lead 6-2.

Faceoff specialist Tom Kelly won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and scored off the fast break to cut the lead to three. The Machine then scored three straight goals from Peter Baum, Steele Stanwick, and Tom Schreiber to make it 9-3. Thunder and lightning rolled into the area and delayed the game for over an hour and a half during the second quarter. Once the water was cleared from the field, play resumed. The Outlaws went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to two, but the Machine ended the quarter with a 5-0 run of their own. Marcus Holman and Schreiber scored twice in the run while Stanwick added another. The Machine led 14-7 at halftime.

After a shortened halftime, the Outlaws came out firing in the 3rd quarter and outscored the Machine 8-1. Law added three goals and midfielder Drew Snider scored twice while Matt Kavanagh and Greg Downing each added a goal. The quarter goal differential was the largest in MLL Championship history.

Denver kept the momentum in the fourth quarter with three quick goals. Wes Berg scored twice and Kavanagh added another. Ohio rallied back, scoring three straight goals of their own behind Holman, John Grant Jr., and Jake Bernhardt. Grant's second goal of the game set the MLL playoff career goal record at 30 goals, passing Josh Sims at 29 goals.

The game was tied until late in the 4th quarter when Jeremy Sieverts found Eric Law for the game winning goal with 13 seconds left in the game. The Outlaws held on to win, 19-18.

The game was Denver's sixth MLL Championship appearance in eleven years as a team. The Outlaws also won the MLL Championship in 2014 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University.

New GSA restroom rule "model" for other sectors

The National LGBTQ Task Force is welcoming a new rule the General Services Administration (GSA) that bans discrimination against transgender people using restrooms that match their gender identity in federal facilities.

“We welcome this enormous step forward on the part of the General Services Administration (GSA). The new rule, which serves as a model for state and local governments, and to private entities, brings federal government facilities and spaces in line with already existing sex discrimination law. According to preliminary data from the U.S. Trans Survey, 59% of trans people have avoided bathrooms in the last year because they feared confrontations in public restrooms, at work, school, or in other places. In fact, 31% have even avoided eating or drinking out of fear of using the bathroom. Because of this rule, more trans people will be treated with dignity and will be less likely to be victims of violence,” said Victoria M. Rodríguez-Roldán, Trans/Gender Nonconforming Justice Project Director, National LGBTQ Task Force.
