The Gay Vegans: Pick An Action, Any Action

Now is not a time to sit on the sidelines. With so much going on in the world, it’s time to act. Many who read this blog are already engaged in some type of activism and action, and I am grateful to be immersed in community with you. For those in our communities who have thought about doing something but aren’t quite there, now is the time to pick an action, any action.

Aleppo.

The Dakota Pipeline.

A crazy election.

Poverty.

Local injustice.

The list is endless. I believe we all have the power to make our world a safer, better place for all. We all have passions and many of us are in a position to make change. Action can be attending a local protest or even creating one of your own. It can be a letter to the editor. It can be an article that explains an issue that is important to you shared on your Facebook page. Things we have done recently include a vegan potluck to introduce delicious vegan food to friends and neighbors who are not vegan as well as using our social media to put a spotlight on what is happening in North Dakota. We also made a donation to a group we love that is doing incredible work in Los Angeles. None of these are big actions, and we think each has made a difference.

One person can make a huge difference.

PLUS A lunatic hook man, spiders in a beehive and calls coming from inside the house! Urban legends live on in this exciting new adaptation of the beloved Romero classic that started it all.

Said Director/Adaptor Kris Hipps, “I've been a zombie fan since the first time I saw the original ‘Night of the Living Dead’ as a kid and immediately started thinking about ways to barricade our house in case of a zombie attack.” A unique aspect of the show is that all the action taking place inside the famous farmhouse is on stage, while all the action outside the house is projected onto an overhead screen, utilizing sequences re-created and shot by Paper Cat Films.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD will be October 7 through 29, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance/$14 for students, seniors and military. Mary isn’t just a dear friend, GLAD's Civil Rights Project Director (for the past 27 years!), and a McArthur Genius - she’s one of the smartest minds in this movement.

Her leadership in GLAD's groundbreaking case, Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, made Massachusetts the first state where same-sex couples could legally marry in 2004. As one of the thousands of couples who have said “I do” in Massachusetts, we are forever grateful for her work on that pivotal case.

It’s because of her experience litigating the Goodridge case and countless others that her colleagues asked her to argue Obergefell v. Hodges before the Supreme Court. We all remember how it felt to hear the ruling that extended the freedom to marry to all 50 states.

As our focus has shifted from marriage to equal treatment for all LGBT people, we’ve all seen the organized effort to attempt to halt our progress. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and no one knows that better than Mary. Her wisdom, thoughtfulness, and insight will be critical to overcoming the obstacles that are ahead.

You’ve all heard us quote William Gladstone who said, “Justice delayed is justice denied.” That quote inspires our collective efforts to extend protections to as many LGBT people, as quickly as possible.  We know Mary will help all of us do just that.

Presidential Debate Fails to Address LGBTQ Rights

Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton took part in a one-on-one debate at Hofstra University last night. The two major political party presidential nominees faced each other for the first time just 42 days before Election Day.

“We are disappointed that neither Presidential candidate spoke about the need for strong federal nondiscrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people. With an anticipated 100 million viewers watching, this would have also been a great opportunity for the candidates to provide clear remedies on how to advance voting rights, secure reproductive justice, and fix the broken immigration system,” said Rea Carey, National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund Executive Director.

“Last night, each candidate discussed their position on how they would address economic disparities, criminal justice reform, gun violence, and racial injustice in America. We hope that voters take a close look at each candidate’s platform and vote their values of full freedom, justice and equality for all.”

Celebration of Banned Books Week 2016: “Unsuited for Age Group”: Queer Youth Survival and the Freedom to Read

“Unsuited for Age Group”:  Queer Youth Survival and the Freedom to Read , a talk by Assistant Professor Zoe Fisher  at noon on Thursday, September 29  in honor of Banned Book Week at the Auraria Library.

Why are books with LGBTQ+ themes and characters targeted by parents and educators for removal from libraries? In 2015, the list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books included titles like I Am Jazz, a picture book based on the real life of a transgender child, Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out, Alison Bechdel’s bestselling memoir Fun Home, and the young adult novel Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan. 

In this engaging and interactive talk, Assistant Professor Zoe Fisher will define and contextualize the attempts to censor these titles as an extension of America’s long struggle with internalized homophobia. As a librarian, she will argue that the profession of librarianship promotes queer youth survival by providing access to diverse books. Participants will discuss examples of banned books with queer themes and learn about contemporary controversies related to LGBTQ+ youth literature.
