Op/Ed: Lambda Literary Condemns Milo Yiannopolous Book Deal

By Lambda Literary

Last week, Milo Yiannopolous, notorious for his misogynistic, transphobic, homophobic, and racist rants, announced he had signed a $250,000 book deal with the Simon and Schuster imprint Threshold Editions.

While publishers undeniably have the right to acquire and profit from any book they wish, they also bear an essential responsibility to promote civil discourse and reject hate speech that is often a precursor to violence. Even as publishers tout the diversity of voices they publish, they should not enable the work of a writer whose diatribes bludgeon women, transgender people, queer people, people of color, or anyone else.

We at Lambda Literary stand with the diverse writers and readers who believe that for a publisher to give this writer money and a megaphone is an affront to the values we all share. Furthermore, if Yiannopolous's forthcoming book, Dangerous, contains the same hateful rhetoric that got him banned from Twitter and earned him widespread censure---including from the LGBTQ community he claims to be part of--
then Lambda Literary will have to condemn the work as hostile to our mission of advocacy for LGBTQ literature and affirmation of LGBTQ lives.

Lambda Literary calls on readers and reviewers to ignore his book. Instead we encourage everyone to read these recently released and forthcoming books that illuminate the LGBTQ experience with intelligence and compassion:
  • The Angel of History by Rabih Alameddine (Atlantic Monthly Press, October 2016)

Nice To See StevieB: 2017

By StevieB

Well hello there. Welcome to 2017.

Since I started blogging in 2007, I have done a lot of New Year Resolutions posts. This meant I listed things I was to fix about myself the adjacent year. This was all good and fine, and most of the time it worked. This was because they were published for me to review throughout the year. Today; I have realized that starting a new year really is a great time for this. But, also It's a great time to stop and listen to the lessons learned the previous year.

I learned in 2016, to just go hiking. Don't wait for others to join in on an activity I love. I stopped waiting for others to acknowledge the things I love to do. I don't need the approval of others to enjoy any activity. I strap on my hiking boots a get on a mountain trail. So I guess I've stopped being afraid of being alone.

Speaking of friends. In 2016 I finially learned what being a friend really is. It's not history, it's not statements about friendship; it's actions taken every day. No demands of proving whether you're worthy by sending to proper given amount of text messages. Friendship is organic, a concept that can't mean calculated. Only measured by phone calls for no reason and invites and silly adventures.

I realized in 2016 that my work life sets a standard for everything else. Don't stay in a job that makes me unhappy. I encountered the world's worst boss in 2016, and felt there wasn't other options. There was. There are always other options. You just have to uncover them. This advice hold true for the previous statements. There's always other options. In healthy friends and better hiking trails.

So do I have resolutions for 2017? Kinda. Yesterday I signed up to run a 5K in June. It has always been a dream of mine to run a road race. This year I will do it. Dear God, help me. I better start training, June isn't that far off in regard to me waddling my way through a organized running competition. Step one. Clear out the bad stuff in my kitchen and strap-on some running shoes.

Come on 2017, you are full of options. Let's go choose the best ones.

Series of New Studies Shed Light on Sex Determination in Human Development

“’Is it a girl or a boy?’ For parents of children with Disorders/Differences in Sex Development (DSD), the question can provoke great anxiety,” writes Michiko Watanabe, PhD, and Naveen Uli, MD, co-editors of a special issue of Birth Defects Research Part C: Embryo Today, which examines challenges surrounding sex determination of babies born with defects of the genitalia.

Historically referred to as “intersex,” the Differences/Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) means babies born with DSD can have sex chromosomes that don’t match internal or external genital anatomy that are expected for a boy or a girl or there are ambiguous genitalia. The scientific journal released today (see the Overview, doi: 10.1002/bdrc.21149) includes studies shedding light on how changed molecular structure of DNA could predict certain DSD in the baby.

“I was struck by the review by Mendonca et al. in which they followed many patients and started with a thorough and detailed phenotyping of patient anatomy. They then delved deeply into the details of the associated 3-D molecular structures that caused the changes in anatomy,” said Dr. Watanabe, who is also a professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University. “This highly detailed explanation of how DSD arose could have big implications in devising potential treatments for the future,” she added.

Dr. Watanabe points out that while the research included in the journal surrounding DSD focuses primarily on physical birth defects of the genitalia, she does see it as a gateway for potential answers to questions surrounding the transgender community. “The issue of transgender is certainly getting a lot of heated public discussion,” she said. “This is a brain function issue since the brain is an important sex organ. It is very likely linked to molecular changes during brain development and differentiation. We are just beginning to understand this complex and fascinating story.”

The heated social implications toward DSD are also alive and well in the communities around the world, as noted by Annastasia Ediati, PhD, lead author of another review included in the issue who also serves as a faculty member of the Clinical Psychology Department at Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia. “Having a genetic diagnosis can be important for patients with a DSD since it is often met with stigma.” She points out the strong social and cultural reactions to DSD and how the families of individuals with DSD may be influenced by the social and cultural environment. “They’re making important decisions for medical treatment that may not necessarily be in the best interest of the individual with DSD due to these influences.” However, Dr. Ediati also points out that many efforts had been taken to promote acceptance from the families of those affected by DSD, but less efforts have been done to work on the community level. “Social support environments for individuals with DSD may be a good place to start, but we still have a long way to go.”

Gus Kenworthy & Matt Wilkas Cover OUT’s Annual “Love Issue”

OUT magazine released its annual “Love Issue” today, and for the first time the issue features dual covers. Two couples, Olympic free-skier and medalist Gus Kenworthy and actor Matt Wilkas as well as actress Samira Wiley and writer-producer Lauren Morelli, strike intimate poses on this year’s sensual covers. OUT sat down with the couples, who opened about the first time they met, past relationships and the sacrifices they’ve made for one another.

Kenworthy on how he first asked Wilkas out:
“I’d written him a message on Instagram while [his first boyfriend] Robin and I were on a break – I’d seen Matt in the movie Gayby, and he’d popped up on my Instagram with these videos he makes, and I watched a few of them – he used to do these ones with a silly chick who wiggles when the sun hits her, and I thought they were really funny. I followed him, he followed me back, and I wrote him this really long message on Instagram. I said, “Hey, I think you’re really funny, and you seem really sweet, and I’ve been enjoying following you on Instagram, and actually I’m in the closet right now, and I’m coming to New York in a couple of week if you want to get a coffee or something.”

Wilkas’s reaction to being asked out on Instagram:
“Gus reached out to me on Instagram, and he was very sweet. I think he said he really liked my sense of humor and thought I was funny, and I thought, Who is this guy? I didn’t know what free-skiing was. I’d just come out of a relationship and was going to therapy and wasn’t really in the right place, so when he asked me out, essentially on a date, via Instagram, I couldn’t do it.”

Kenworthy on saying “I love you” for the first time:
“… I could feel his heart beating and sensed his energy, and he turned to me and said, ‘I want to tell you something, but I’m scared,’ and I just totally hijacked it and said, ‘I love you.’ And then he said it back, and he was crying, and I was crying. It was really sweet.”

Wilkas on their long-distance relationship:
“For me, being apart a lot of the time is a good thing, but I don’t think Gus feels that way. He doesn’t really want a long-distance relationship. I don’t either but think time apart is valuable and can work.”

Kenworthy on their future:
“All relationships take work, and we’ve definitely begun to realize that…I was in a relationship from 18-23, and I still haven’t really experienced that much sexually. I wouldn’t want to ever sacrifice my relationship with Matt just to go out and get that out of my system, but we’ve also talked about that and he doesn’t want to deprive me of experiencing anything while I’m still young. I don’t necessarily know what that means. But we’re not in an open relationship and we’re not breaking up. But we’re also not getting married.’”

American Airlines Celebrates 15 Years with Perfect 100 Percent Score On Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index

American Airlines has been honored once again by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) with the highest possible rating in the prestigious 2017 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). American was the only airline to achieve a perfect score when the CEI launched in 2002, and is one of only a handful of corporations to do so every year since.

The CEI is a nationally recognized benchmark that evaluates America’s top workplaces and their inclusion of LGBT employees and their allies. Companies like American that earn the top CEI score of 100 percent also are named the “Best Places to Work” in the U.S.

“American Airlines takes inspiration from the ideals of the Corporate Equality Index,” said Patrick O'Keeffe, American’s vice president – PSS & Corporate Technology and the co-executive sponsor of the airline’s Pride Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG). “This milestone reflects our employees’ longstanding dedication to diversity, inclusion and equality throughout the company – and to serving our loyal LGBT customers every day. We are grateful to the Human Rights Campaign for this recognition.”

The Feline Fix - Caring for Colorado's Community Cats

More than 20,000 cats are euthanized annually in Colorado simply because there are not enough homes for them all. Unfortunately, we can't simply adopt our way out of the problem.

An unaltered female cat, tame or feral, may become pregnant as early as five months of age and bear two to three litters per year for her entire life; which for a feral cat is roughly five years.

The purpose of Divine Feline and it's clinic, The Feline Fix, is to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless cats and to promote the health and welfare of all cats, feral and tame, through the practice of providing quality and affordable spay and neuter services and the practice of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).

Stonewall Fitness: Self-Defense for the LGBTQ Individual

By David Smith

The LGBT+ community certainly has made a lot of progress over the last decade toward full acceptance and equality, but the community and especially transgender people still are at an increased risk of anti-gay violence occurring. From larger incidents such as the June 2016 shootings at Pulse nightclub to smaller incidents involving individuals. It happens all over the world, and even in places that are seen as more accepting of LGBT+ culture.

The Pulse Nightclub shootings certainly rattled many people and barely 1 year from the landmark Supreme Court ruling for same sex marriage, we are reminded that while things are better, there are still many people out there who hate the LGBT+ community.

Given the current political climate, particularly in the United States there is much xenophobia and hateful rhetoric being thrown around by individuals and collective groups from all sides. It is important to realize that while in many parts of the world where LGBT+ culture is more accepted, we still aren’t completely safe from anti-LGBT violence. So what can you do to protect yourself?
