Puerto Vallarta Strengthens its Commitment to the LGBT Community

As the celebration of Vallarta Pride (May 17-28), Puerto Vallarta’s annual LGBTQ festival approaches, the city further expands its commitment to its LGBTQ visitors and community with multiple initiatives across the city including the opening of a Gender Equality Office and sensitivity training for local businesses.

Sponsored by the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, “Certified Member LGBT,” is a 12-course training program developed by the Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) and Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) for local hoteliers and tour operators and is part of the country’s overall initiative to “strengthen LGBT offerings in the destination with quality, inclusive and respectful products and service.” The class will be given on May 25th.

Puerto Vallarta Mayor Arturo Dávalos Peña started the destination’s current initiatives last week by inaugurating a new government office specializing in LGBTQ issues. The Office of Gender Equality, located in the Gayborhood of the Zona Romantica, will be a safe place for lesbian, gay, transsexual, bisexual, transgender, and intersexual communities residing in or visiting the city. The mayor expressed that the Office of Gender Equality is another key initiative in the city’s commitment to ensure Puerto Vallarta continues to be a friendly and welcoming destination, for which “we have already taken very important steps, such as the establishment of same-sex marriages that became legal in March of last year.”

Peter Silberman - Impermanence at The Glass House | Part Four: "Maya"

Peter Silberman has unveiled the fourth in a series of intimate sessions, captured across a single day at architect Philip Johnson’s Glass House museum.

Impermanence at the Glass House” is a performance film in six parts by Derrick Belcham, featuring dancers Rebecca Margolick and Stephanie Crousillat. The film follows the arc of Impermanence, with "Maya" following on from “Karuna”, "New York" and "Gone Beyond."

From director Derrick Belcham: “It is rare to find a project in which each element is a person, practice and aesthetic that I love completely.  The sound of Peter’s performance reflecting off the surfaces and enclosures, Rebecca and Stephanie’s spatial relationship with the architecture of the Glass House, the visual reflection of the House itself, the exchange of words and chords with the bodies of the dancers augmented by Natasha Takemoto and Joy Wolcott’s perfectly-toned garments created a beautiful world to explore with the camera.  These dynamic partnerships allowed for theater-level exploration as the events were captured in a single take and single shot.”

With World OutGames Miami 2017 coming up in just a few short weeks and the Gay Games Paris 2018 a little over a year away. Many athletes are starting to think about how they can best prepare and train to achieve their personal best on and off the field.

If you’re investing the money and time for the trip to Miami and onto Paris, or any other big sporting event; be sure to invest in your own training, fitness and well being as an athlete. When you arrive in Miami and in Paris and get ready to compete, don’t you want to be there feeling like you’re investment was worth it? Better yet, feel like all your hard work paid off! Sports’ training doesn’t just take place on the field (or court, pool, track, etc.). What you do off the field can have just as much of an impact. Improving your overall fitness level, eating habits and attitude by adopting a program that is more specific to your sport will not only help you prevent injuries but you will develop conditioning, strength, stamina and balance and mental readiness you will need to arrive ready to succeed in Miami or Paris. You might even look good and ready for the beach too! Most importantly, you will be as ready as ever to take on the competition and accomplish your goals.

That’s what being a champion is all about!

NCLR: Gorsuch confirmation jeopardizes core constitutional rights of millions of Americans

The U.S. Senate confirmed Trump Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch on Friday. This vote came on the heels of a rule change by Senate Republicans yesterday after they failed to secure the 60 votes needed to move forward with Gorsuch's confirmation. Gorsuch, a controversial selection rated as more conservative than the late Justice Antonin Scalia, will now replace Scalia on the bench. At 49 years old, now-Justice Gorsuch has the potential to influence our nation’s highest court for decades.

National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendell, Esq. issued the following statement in response:

“To change the rules to ram through a Supreme Court nominee too extreme to garner 60 votes undermines the Senate's historical role as a deliberative body. And with today’s appointment, Senate Republicans have jeopardized the core constitutional rights of millions of Americans.

As veterans of the marriage equality fight, we understand how profoundly Supreme Court rulings can affect our daily lives. Judge Gorsuch’s record on some of our most fundamental constitutional freedoms—such as the right to privacy, equality under the law, and access to reproductive health care—is dangerous, troubling, and miles behind where we are today. We must not allow these critical freedoms to be lost or undone. In the wake of this disappointment, we join with millions of other Americans in renewing our commitment to a vision of this country and of our Constitution that looks forward, not back, and that promises freedom and equality for all."
