OutRight Comments on President Trump’s First 100 Days

Saturday, 29th April, marks President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office. Since becoming President of the United States on 20th January 2017, President Trump has put forth a slew of Executive Orders and made both domestic and foreign affairs decisions that have been met with pushback. Many of these policy decisions have a direct impact on LGBTIQ people in the United States and around the world.

Jessica Stern, Executive Director of OutRight Action International, shares her reflection of President Trump’s time in office thus far:
President Trumps first 100 days in office have been harmful for many communities. He has tried to institutionalize xenophobic, anti-Muslim, anti-refugee, anti-women and anti-immigrant policies that perpetuate discrimination and promote divisiveness. All of them have an impact on LGBTIQ people who hold intersecting identities as parts of all of these groups.
Apart from keeping intact protections for federal workers against LGBTIQ based discrimination, it is hard to keep up with the list of illogical policies that President Trump has put forth in his first 100 days in office.
From appointing hate group C-Fam to an official government delegation to the United Nation’s annual conference on women, to reinstating the Global Gag Rule, which prevents organizations that receive US funding from providing comprehensive sexual reproductive healthcare to women, he has shown that he has no regard whatsoever for women’s rights.
Instead of investing in policies that promote peace and global engagement, this administration has preached building walls, calling for a Muslim ban -- albeit in the form of naming specific countries, and expanding the military budget. Lowering the ceiling on refugee admissions by over 50%, Trump’s decision means that so many more individuals are denied safety and protection in the US. All of these decisions impact countless LGBTIQ people who live as immigrants, as Muslims, and live in places where their lives are in constant jeopardy.
President Trump’s policies have far reaching implications. By proposing to defund the United Nations and the State Department, he has demonstrated how little respect he has for the international system as a whole. This same international system is too often the only recourse for LGBTIQ people who cannot get justice in their own countries.
If President Trumps first 100 days are an indication of what we should expect from this administration in the next four years, we are in danger of setting back the clock on human rights in this country and globally. We must continue to resist all forms of discrimination and stand up for inclusion and tolerance. President Trump needs to understand that having an “America First” policy is no justification for failing to meet international human rights obligations. Above all he must put people first.

Books: Live Through This

Live Through This: Surviving the Intersections of Sexuality, God, and Race by Clay Cane is book of powerful, personal essays that will intrigue readers from all backgrounds, and help them connect with the issues facing some of America's most disenfranchised communities by delivering emotional narratives that demand to be heard, respected and understood, now, more than ever.

With honesty and humor, Clay Cane reflects on his diverse racial identity, his childhood growing up in Philadelphia and Washington State during the 1980s and 1990s, and his search for his “tribe” as a black gay man. Through these stories, Cane also explores the intersections of identity in communities of undocumented workers, transgender women of color, queer people, single mothers, and poor whites, as well as, the nuances of race, sexuality, faith, and gender.

National LGBTQ Task Force: Trump's First 100 Days Marked By Agenda Designed to Destroy Lives

Tomorrow marks 100 days since Donald Trump took office. In response, the National LGBTQ Task Force released the following statement:

"Since taking office, Donald Trump has pushed an agenda that is designed to destroy lives and roll back progress. Everything he has done is detrimental to marginalized communities. His executive orders and actions dehumanize and devalue entire communities of people—including transgender children, people of color and women. His cabinet, administration appointments and his Supreme Court nominee are a who’s who of the extreme right. He has targeted undocumented immigrants with a vengeance—dividing families and sending people back to the most appalling situations. His budget steals from programs that help the middle-class and people on low incomes in favor of defense programs that are already fully funded. Trump gets a F grade for his first 100 days," Rea Carey, National LGBTQ Task Force Executive Director.

OUT Web Fest 2017 hosts opening night at YouTube Space LA to honor LGBTQ influencers Tyler Oakley and Gigi Gorgeous

OUT Web Fest (OWF) returns on May 12th 2017 to celebrate the best in independent LGBTQ digital storytelling with an opening night event at YouTube Space LA. Featuring luminaries in the LGBTQ and media communities and hosting speaker panels by industry-leading figures, the three-day festival will commence with a red-carpet premiere at the beautiful, YouTube Space LA in Playa Vista. The premiere will honor Tyler Oakley and Gigi Gorgeous for their contributions to queer digital storytelling, and the event will include a screening of the acclaimed documentary This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous, directed by multiple Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple.

“As an LGBTQ-inclusive festival dedicated to new and emerging queer and allied storytellers, OWF is more important than ever at this time in history and we could not be prouder to partner with YouTube Space LA to launch our second year,” said Christopher J. Rodriguez, Head of Programming for OWF. “The setting for our opening night is the perfect venue to celebrate stories by and for the LGBTQ community and we are delighted to honor these two talents with our annual REVRY-presented Visibility Awards.”

Tyler will be given the Vanguard Award honoring an out influencer who has had a profound impact on LGBTQ visibility and acceptance and Gigi will receive the Vision Award for her courage, creativity, and optimism in telling her unique story to a wider audience and helping to evolve society’s perspectives on LGBTQ issues.

OWF’s mission is to celebrate diverse and queer-inclusive content told through the digital medium and to offer storytellers from around the globe a chance to share their vision, a mission firmly aligned with YouTube, whose platform has – in a relatively short amount of time – managed to transform the way people communicate and empower people to express themselves as individuals.

"YouTube has supported the LGBTQ community for years and we're honored to host OUT Web Fest's second annual digital shorts festival at YouTube Space LA to further shine a spotlight on the voices shaping the important conversations around LGBTQ issues," said Liam Collins, Head of Americas, YouTube Spaces. "Two of this year's honorees - Tyler Oakley and Gigi Gorgeous - are beacons for the LGBTQ community on YouTube and beyond, and we're thrilled that they'll be recognized for all their efforts and that audiences will get an opportunity to watch Gigi's story first-hand with a screening of our YouTube Red Original documentary, This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous."

Tickets for the opening night event are free to attendees and can be reserved by visiting this link. Opening night will be followed with festival screenings the next two days at the historic Downtown Independent Theater in the heart of Los Angeles, where OWF will conduct category screenings and several high-profile industry panel sessions. This year’s festival is presented in partnership with REVRY, the world’s first and only global LGBTQ-dedicated digital streaming service who will present a special screening each day of the festival. OWF will conclude with an awards presentation ceremony and special performances from emerging REVRY music artists at the popular gay bar and nightclub, Precinct. HuffPost Queer Voices: Caitlyn Jenner On Trump, Kendall’s Pepsi Ad, Her Beef With Ellen And Being Catcalled

On Tuesday, Caitlyn Jenner sat down with HuffPost's Noah Michelson for a wide-ranging interview ahead of the release of her tell-all memoir, The Secrets of My Life

On Kendall's controversial Pepsi ad: “Honestly I felt very sorry for Kendall. It’s kind of like, sometimes, ‘welcome to the real world.’ We live in a very tough political environment, social environment. You have massive amounts of media looking for a story and obviously some people were looking at that commercial very differently than the way I was looking at it. I get that. And Kendall gets that too. She didn’t mean any malice. She goes, ‘I’m just a model that was hired for a job to go in there and do this…’”

On her feelings about Ellen DeGeneres: “I don’t hold a grudge against nobody. Would I do the show again? Ehh… I don’t know. Maybe it’d be good to do the show just to get it out with Ellen. I’d rather do it in private over dinner. I really don’t want to do it publicly. I just was hurt by that — especially because that was at the beginning…”

On womanhood and being catcalled: “Yesterday we were walking over to Tavern On The Green… and some guy — it was like the construction worker guy — starts yelling at me… he was yelling some rude remark that you’d say to some woman. And I just started laughing because I didn’t grow up like that, as a woman who got all of that stuff. It was just kind of funny. It happens all the time — that’s what women go through."

OUT on Netflix: LOEV

Just a reminder that the groundbreaking film LOEV, a first of its kind gay love story shot entirely in secrecy in India given the country's extreme LGBT laws, will be receiving an exclusive simultaneous global launch on Netflix on May 1, 2017.

Given that homosexuality in India is highly illegal and punishable by life imprisonment, the filmmakers took on a massive risk by shooting this film. Show 'em some love and give it a watch!

Last Chance to See EVITA!

Eva might sing that she "shall not leave" us in her final broadcast, but the truth is that she has to leave us and it's soon! Including tonight, there's only three performances left. That's still three opportunities to see Lauren Shealy as the high-flying, adored First Lady of Argentina; Miles Jacoby as passionate narrator Che; and Jesse Sharp as determined and devoted Juan Perón.
Argentina's controversial First Lady is the subject of this dynamic musical masterpiece. As an illegitimate fifteen year old, Eva escaped her dirt-poor existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president's mistress at twenty-four, First Lady at twenty-seven, and dead at thirty-three. Eva Perón - "saint to the working-class, reviled by the aristocracy, and mistrusted by the military" - was destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th century. Told through a compelling score with a live orchestra that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, EVITA creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself.
