The Debt Free Guys: Take Pride in Your Money

By John R. Schneider, III & David Auten

Cities across the country are showing their Pride this month, as queer people embrace our pride. But, taking pride in who we are is more than one parade a year. It’s a 365-day practice taking care of ourselves physically, emotionally, mentally and financially.

As for the latter, our community has two concerns: the need to pay off debt and the need to save for retirement.

Missing our Financial Pride
Prudential’s 2012 and 2016 LGBT Financial Experience Surveys show that over half of the queer community consistently maintains $10,000 or more of debt, slightly more than the general population. Likewise, LGBT respondents to the 2016 survey were “less likely to have started saving or investing for retirement, to have insurance products, and to have a will or estate plan than those [LGBT respondents] surveyed in 2012 or general population respondents.”

How We Can Have More Money Pride

It’s important for all LGBT people to take at least as much pride in our money as we do in being ourselves.

Build an Emergency Savings Account
If you don’t have an emergency savings account, save at least $500 before you do anything else. Once you do this, you’ll be better prepared to withstand unexpected emergencies or expenses.

When you do this, you’ll have money in case you miss work, get in an accident or exceed your data limit. This will benefit your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Get on a Debt Payment Plan
The most important step to take to pay off your debt, whether student loans, credit cards or another type of loan, is to get on a debt payment plan. Whatever interest rate you’re paying on your debt is too much.

Ways to pay down your debt include the Snowball Method, which says to pay off your smallest balances first and incrementally focus on larger debts. There’s the Avalanche Method that says to pay off your highest interest rate debt first. There’s, also, the Debt Lasso Method that says to gets your interest rates as low as possible, including 0% with some credit cards, and pays off your debt as fast as possible.

Contribute to a Retirement Account
Open a 401(k), 403(b), SEP or SIMPLE IRA through your company. These usually include a corresponding match of your contribution by your employer up to a certain dollar amount. Contribute enough to get 100% of your employer’s match.

Open a Roth IRA. Roth IRAs let you contribute up to $5,500 a year ($6,500 if you’re over 50 years old) with no lifetime maximum. Be careful of minimum balance fees.

Because of the additional and unique challenges the LGBT community faces, we must take extra care of ourselves and our financial lives. Pride is a celebration of who we are and a reminder of how far we’ve come. It’s, also, a good time to gauge how we’re doing individually and how we can improve in the next 365 days to achieve a whole new level of pride.

Katie Von Schleicher - Life's A Lie

Fresh off the back of a UK and European tour with Aldous Harding, today Katie Von Schleicher shares the video for new single, “Life’s A Lie,” described by DIY as "an incredibly confident slice of lo-fi vintage pop." The track is taken from her upcoming debut album Shitty Hits, out July 28th on Ba Da Bing.

"Life's a Lie" is about imposter syndrome," says
Von Schleicher. "I felt really good writing the music, it's a bit inspired by Todd Rundgren or Emitt Rhodes' cheerful pop tunes. On the surface, it's just that. The narrative is from that unrestrained inner voice, the self-critic, which has the power to isolate you from the good stuff. In practice, this all happens on a subconscious level, that's why I thought it apt to be paired with the most joyful sounding track on the record."

DNC's Tom Perez on LGBTQ Pride Month

In celebration of LGBTQ Pride Month 2017, DNC Chair Tom Perez released this statement:

“From Stonewall to the Supreme Court, our nation has made great strides in LGBTQ rights. LGBTQ Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate that progress, to appreciate the cultural achievements of LGBTQ Americans, and to recommit ourselves to the fight for global LGBTQ equality.

“Under the leadership of Barack Obama, America has advanced LGBTQ rights in ways unthinkable just a few years ago. This month, we celebrate the second anniversary of nationwide marriage equality. We ended Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and guaranteed transgender veterans the care they earned serving our nation. Today, hospitals receiving Medicare or Medicaid funds must extend visitation rights to LGBTQ patients. Across the country, violence against LGBTQ individuals can be prosecuted as federal hate crimes. These were hard-fought victories, but there is still much progress to be made.

“From bathrooms to boardrooms, too many LGBTQ Americans are denied the full equality they deserve. In some states, conservative lawmakers continue to advance legislation intended to discriminate against the LGBTQ community. Despite their promises, the Trump administration is hell-bent on rolling back progress, starting with Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to end protections for transgender students. Democrats will fight those these efforts to erode the rights of LGBTQ people and continue to push for LGBTQ equality at home and abroad.

“Internationally, equality is also a long way away. According to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, people in 72 countries can still be prosecuted for who they love. That is unacceptable. President Trump must use the full influence of the United States to pressure our neighbors to recognize the rights of LGBTQ people.

“However, there also are many reasons to be hopeful this Pride Month. Last Wednesday, Taiwan's constitutional court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, paving the way for Taiwan to become the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage. Hopefully, Taiwan’s landmark court decision is the beginning of LGBTQ equality across Asia.

“This month, we must redouble our efforts to fight for the rights of our LGBTQ family, friends, and neighbors around the world, especially those under threat from their own governments.”

Travel: VisitBritain's Love is GREAT Campaign

As part of VisitBritain’s Love is GREAT campaign, the British government will celebrate LGBT rights by participating in local Pride events in 16 cities across the US, Mexico, and Canada this year, and will launch a nationwide sweepstakes on June 10th, 2017 to win a trip to Great Britain. The UK is proud to be recognized as one of the most progressive countries in the world for LGBT rights. The UK is the first foreign government to participate in Pride on such a significant scale in the Americas and is proud to continue the tradition this year. Activity will also commemorate the start of decriminalization of homosexuality in England & Wales with the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act of 1967. Love is GREAT will highlight the UK as a champion of LGBT equality and a global leader in human rights across policy, business, arts, culture, and tourism.

“Last year, it was my great privilege to walk for the first time in DC’s Capital Pride,” British Ambassador Kim Darroch said. “Diversity and inclusion are values that make the United Kingdom great – and as a leader in human rights, the UK is committed to promoting the LGBT cause around the world.”

The UK is proud to be recognized as one of the most progressive countries in the world for LGBT rights and a welcoming destination for all. To celebrate this, between June and October 2017, the British Embassy Washington, the UK Mission to the UN, VisitBritain, and each of the British Consulates will participate in marches and events in their regions – Atlanta, Boston, Austin, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Washington, DC – with additional activity in Mexico City, Toronto and Vancouver.

In 2016, the UK saw record-breaking spend from US visitors, reaching £3.4 billion ($4.4 billion USD) across the UK last year and up 11% on 2015 figures. The latest statistics from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) also show that visits from the US were up 6% to 3.5 million in 2016, compared to the previous year.

“We are thrilled to be celebrating equality through our Love is GREAT Britain, our LGBTQ campaign taking place across Canada, Mexico and the United States. In this historic anniversary year, there are dedicated cultural exhibitions in London to enjoy, as well as Pride Festivals and Parades across the country. There has never been a better time to visit and celebrate your love in Britain.” says Paul Gauger, Executive Vice President Americas for VisitBritain.

Logo Announces List of Most Out & Proud Brands in "Trailblazing Companies" Rankings

Logo, the leading entertainment brand for the LGBTQ community, today released the second annual 'Trailblazing Companies' list, a ranking of companies and brands that have demonstrated a public commitment to LGBTQ people & issues through advertising, communications, and other public initiatives. The campaigns and marketing endeavors on the list showcase a range of personalities, stories and experiences within the LGBTQ community.

Hilton, Anheuser-Busch, Marriott, Google, and Apple were found to have the highest scores in categories that counted LGBTQ initiatives in the following objective, public-facing categories: LGBTQ-Inclusive Advertising, Digital Video & Social Media, Policy Support, Spokespersons & C-Suite Executives, Donations & Sponsorships, and Website Engagement. This year, examples of corporate support for the survivors, families and victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub tragedy were also calculated in scoring.

According to Bob Witeck, President of Witeck Communications, LGBTQ consumers represent an estimated buying power of $971 billion. Previous Logo research also has found that 71 percent of LGBTQ consumers are more likely to support a brand after seeing an equality-themed ad, while 71 percent were more likely to purchase from a company that actively supports and contributes to LGBTQ charities/causes.

Logo's 'Trailblazing Companies' list was created through extensive research conducted in partnership with Witeck Communications, a strategic communications firm with special expertise in LGBTQ communications. Logo started with a pool of close to 200 consumer-facing companies that earned 100% scores for their internal LGBTQ policies on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index. Each company was then evaluated based on the seven objective categories that demonstrate each company's support of the LGBT community in the public sphere. Companies were awarded points based on their performance in each of these areas.

“Each of these companies is delivering a message of inclusion, diversity and equality that is needed now more than ever,” said Pamela Post, SVP of Programming for Logo. “While we are incredibly proud to recognize these 25 trailblazing companies who are raising the bar higher than just their bottom line, the ultimate goal is to one day reach a time when a list like this is no longer necessary.”

Bob Witeck also adds that, “the resonance of LGBTQ attitudes in the marketplace has made a sea of change in how brands express their values, connect innovatively with diverse households, and grow market share. This new study is an encouraging roadmap of trends and opportunities for all brands aiming to step up their competition.”

How Tyler Oakley Plans to Celebrate Gay Pride Month May Surprise You

Tyler Oakley has some pretty epic plans to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month. The online star has launched a YouTube series entitled Chosen Family, which will highlight and celebrate different aspects of LGBTQ+ culture and history throughout the month of June.

“Chosen Family is all about celebrating queer life, amplifying disenfranchised voices within the LGBTQ+ community, and honoring our history while fighting for our future,” Oakley tells PEOPLE about the project.

“Creating the series has enriched my little gay soul, and I’m honored to share it with the world,” he continues. “Not only are we making videos that are so important to me, but each week we’re selling limited edition t-shirts that raise money for causes directly relating to that week’s content. LGBTQ+ Pride is about resilience, and I’m so excited to show that this year.” Tyler has organized a fundraising opportunity with Represent to design limited edition t-shirts to celebrate a different theme each week for Pride Month. A portion of the proceeds will be going to a different LGBTQ+ organization each week.

Organizations around the world failing to safeguard LGBTI* children from abuse, says KCS

More than half of organizations surveyed worldwide either do not have adequate measures in place to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI*) children from harm, or their staff are unaware if such measures exist, according to new research by international child safeguarding network Keeping Children Safe (KCS).

One-hundred and fifty organizations were surveyed on their institutional readiness to safeguard LGBTI* children in line with their obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Child Safeguarding Standards, which apply to all children under the age of 18, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Safeguarding these vulnerable children is especially critical because despite progress on LGBTI* rights over the last 25 years, LGBTI* children around the world still suffer significant levels of discrimination and abuse. LGBTI* children report higher levels of sexual abuse than their heterosexual counterparts, they are disproportionally represented in the foster care system and 9 out of 10 LGBTI* students experience some form of mistreatment or bullying in school. Too often, these children are put at risk by inadequate or non-existent safeguarding measures in the organisations that are supposed to serve them.

The results of the research were published today by KCS, in a joint working paper for international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) with Dreilinden gGmbH and SOS Children's Villages International: “Let me be me!” Better care for LGBTI children. The paper highlighted the legal human rights context for LGBTI* children and includes good practice from organisations and interviews with LGBTI* care leavers.

Ise Bosch, CEO of Dreilinden, stressed the need “to identify promising practice, reflect bad practice, to consider the theory and the legal contexts, but most of all to find ways how live up to human rights requirements and professional care standards in this laggard field of work.”

According to the survey responses, 60% of child safeguarding policies do not explicitly refer to the commitment to preventing harm to LGBTI* children, and 63% of recruitment procedures do not assess prospective employees’ attitudes towards safeguarding them. Thirty-eight per cent stated that lack of capacity played a part in preventing LGBTI* children from being adequately safeguarded, and 53% of respondents feel that their system for monitoring and reviewing safeguarding measures does not take into account the needs of LGBTI* children.

“All organizations have the responsibility to protect children and that includes LGBTI* children,” said Sarah Blakemore, KCS’s director. “But these statistics paint a picture of millions of children across the world who may be put at risk by inadequate or non-existent safeguarding measures in the organisations that are supposed to serve them.”

One statistic that stands out is that 43% of organizations believe that a lack of training or guidance is a significant barrier to safeguarding LGBTI* children. With more widespread awareness and pressure on organizations from donors, this is something that can be changed.

When organizations were asked if they would be interested in support and guidance on safeguarding LGBTI* children, almost all respondents (91%) indicated that they would.
