Colorado’s LGBTQ Laws Rated in Human Rights Campaign’s Annual State Equality Index

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, in partnership with the Equality Federation, today released its fourth annual national report assessing the status of state legislation affecting LGBTQ equality across America and placing states in one of four categories based on their pro- and anti-LGBTQ state laws. Colorado falls into the category, “Working Toward Innovative Equality.”

This year’s SEI details the onslaught of more than 125 anti-LGBTQ laws introduced across 30 states during the 2017 state legislative season, including legislative proposals to grant sweeping licenses to discriminate; undercut marriage equality; and target the transgender community -- including transgender children. The report comes as more than 40 state legislatures will reconvene by the end of January. A new 2018 legislative preview report from HRC also found that state legislators, under relentless pressure from opponents of equality, are expected to wage attacks on transgender people -- particularly in the critical areas of health care and access to appropriate restrooms.

The 2017 SEI report points to a few encouraging signs for LGBTQ youth, as well as transgender and gender non-conforming people seeking to update their identity documents. Four states -- Connecticut, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Nevada -- passed new bans on the practice of so-called “conversion therapy,” bringing the total number of states with such bans to 10, plus the District of Columbia. And the number of states in the SEI’s highest-rated category, Working Toward Innovative Equality, increased this year from nine to 13. These states and the nation’s capital have robust LGBTQ non-discrimination laws covering employment, housing and public accommodations, as well as protections in the areas of credit and insurance. Despite these wins, laws protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination vary widely across the nation -- or simply do not exist in many states.

“If an LGBTQ couple drove from Maine to California today, their legal rights and civil rights protections could change more than 20 times at state borders and city lines. The vast majority of Americans today understand that this crazy quilt of protections -- and lack thereof -- is wrong, impractical, and unacceptable,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “The time has come for us to do away with this ragged patchwork of state laws that fail to protect LGBTQ people equally by passing the Equality Act once and for all.”

"The Municipal Equality Index demonstrates that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Coloradans and their families face different barriers in their jobs and communities depending on where they live," said Daniel Ramos, Executive Director of One Colorado. "We will continue our work to advance equality -- not only at the state level, but also in cities and towns across Colorado -- until every LGBTQ person can live openly and honestly in every corner of the state.”

Even at a time of historically broad and deep support for full LGBTQ equality, an estimated 12 million-plus LGBTQ Americans and their families remain at risk, particularly if they live in one of the 31 states where laws do not adequately protect them against being fired, evicted or denied services because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. A map of this patchwork of protections can be found here.

According to new HRC polling data, collected by Hart Research Associates, a strong majority of likely voters nationwide support laws that would prevent discrimination against LGBTQ people in the workplace (59 percent) and in housing (58 percent) -- such as the federal Equality Act, which was reintroduced in Congress earlier this year. In fact, many voters believe these protections already exist: fully thirty-eight percent of voters interviewed in a new HRC poll incorrectly believed that current federal law fully protects the right of LGBTQ people on matters such as employment, housing and access to government benefits.

HRC’s full State Equality Index report, including detailed scorecards for every state; a comprehensive review of 2017 state legislation; and a preview of the 2018 state legislative session is available online at www.hrc.org/sei.

One Colorado: Our Legislative Agenda

By Laura "Pinky" Reinsch, Political Director, One Colorado

Today is the start of Colorado’s Legislative Session and we have A TON happening at the start of 2018, so I hope you’ll join us to make your voice heard, march, and take action. You can find more details about the bills were working on below! Want to get involved with our work in 2018? Here’s what we have coming up:

January 16 from 5-7pm - One Colorado’s Legislative Session Kickoff

January 20 from 8:30am-1pm - March with the Queer Contingent at the Women’s March on Colorado

February 26 from 8:30am-2pm - LGBTQ Lobby Day
In 2018, we’re committed to advancing legislation that creates a fair and just state for all Coloradans:
  1. The Birth Certificate Modernization Act will make it less burdensome for transgender Coloradans to update the gender on their birth certificate. Transgender people whose birth certificates reflect their sex at birth – and not their current gender – risk being denied housing, employment opportunities, and the right to vote because of this discrepancy.

  2. Banning conversion therapy for minors will protect LGBTQ young people from dangerous and discredited practices aimed at changing their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
  3. We will work to defeat any and all bills that allow individuals and businesses to claim their religion gives them permission to ignore the law, stop all attempts to stigmatize and attack transgender Coloradans and their families, and fight any other bills that will hurt LGBTQ Coloradans.

  4. Working with partner organizations, we will support fair immigration policies, guarantee that every Coloradan has the right to vote, and support policies that ensure LGBTQ Coloradans can earn a good life.
The issues we work on in the next couple of months are going to set the stage for electing a pro-equality majority in the state senate and a pro-equality governor in November 2018 and we’re looking forward to working with you to make sure that happens.

Hope to see you soon!

Reptaliens - Ubik

Reptaliens have released the newest video off their surreal debut album, FM-2030. The psychedelic video for "Ubik" features cult-style mass followers in hazmat suits worshipping the sun.

Calling the video "Whimsical", Under the Radar premiered the video. The band told them, "We were shopping for outfits for our actress to wear during the live show and we found a huge box of hazmat suits. We couldn't pass them up so we bought them all. Later the idea formed to film a video for 'Ubik' during the upcoming total solar eclipse...It seemed fitting that this video be filmed during such an eerie and un-real solar event so we tried to capture some of the mood through superimposed footage in black and white, and of course some fog."

PFAW Statement on Judiciary Committee Hearing on Trump Nominee Howard Nielson

In response to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing yesterday on judicial nominees including Howard C. Nielson, Donald Trump’s nominee for United States District Court Judge for the District of Utah, People For the American Way senior legislative counsel Paul Gordon issued the following statement:

“At today’s hearing, Howard Nielson did nothing to adequately address the enormous concerns that have been raised about his long record of extremism and contempt for the rule of law. This is particularly true with respect to the fears that were raised by his willingness to file a brief arguing that gay judges should be prevented from hearing cases about gay rights. All of these issues highlight profound concerns about Nielson’s respect for the rule of law.

“Since the beginning of President Trump’s administration, Republicans in the Senate have been rushing to rubberstamp profoundly unfit and unqualified nominees to the federal bench. Nielson is a prime example of the kind of nominee that senators of both parties should stand up against. It’s up to Senate Republicans to decide if they’ll stand up for the integrity of our courts or abdicate their constitutional responsibility to fully vet nominees to the federal bench.”

Print all In new window Omar Sharif Jr. Shares What It's Like Being a Gay Egyptian in the Public Eye

Yesterday, actor and activist Omar Sharif Jr. opened up in an op-ed for Hornet titled A Voice for the Voiceless: Amidst a Brutal Crackdown, This Gay Egyptian Looks for Hope. The piece shares what it’s like being a gay Egyptian in the public eye and the weight it carries both in the United States and in Egypt.

On being a public figure and coming out:
“When I came out in 2012, I wanted to use my status as a relatively public figure — grandson of two of Egypt’s most beloved celebrities — to push LGBTQ acceptance through what I then assumed would be our darkest hour. Unfortunately, since then conditions have only worsened, and the country is now gripped by a brutal crackdown against some of its most vulnerable citizens.”

His advice for youth in Egypt:

"I can’t tell the young gay Egyptians who message me to come out en masse; I don’t want them to be cannon fodder for my ideals. I can’t even tell them to come out to their own families; few of them had the liberalizing experiences my grandparents did, working on movies with people from all walks of life. So I tell them to be safe, to be careful, to hang on"

Cherry Creek North: Have You Ever Been Someplace That Just Feels Right?

One hundred and forty years ago, Cherry Creek North was part of a small town called Harman. Since then, Cherry Creek North has emerged as a staple in the fabric of Denver and Colorado, blossoming into a very special mixed-use district.

What sets it apart? Perhaps it’s the walkability of the area, or lodging that provides all the comforts of home. Maybe it’s the laughter spilling out of a gallery during a nightly wine tasting, or alfresco dining on a patio laced with flowers. When you’re in Cherry Creek North, you can sit back and exhale. Life feels good here.

Undies & Lube: Underwear Should Be Fun to Wear

Long gone are the days when cheap white briefs were the go-to underwear for men. Today's underwear create a display and excitement like never before. The Undies & Lube team helps you put on a good show at tonight’s scene. Or the next hottie that destiny sends your way.

From grow-ers to show-ers... Today’s modern underwear fabrics fit all kinds of shapes and sizes. They’re also designed to fit a variety of activities. Here’s what you need to know about the top fabrics and when to wear them.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fiber that doesn’t wrinkle. Today’s polyester isn’t the same cheap nasty fabric of the 60’s and 70’s. New manufacturing and weaves have created material. It lasts longer and much more durable than before.

Also gone are the boring pastel colors. Polyester can be produced in bright vibrant colors and doesn’t fade. Polyester fabric stretches, does not wrinkle, and provides that feeling of being encased without extreme sweating.

Many times it’s combined with other fabrics to add durability and structure. Thanks to new weaving patterns interlocking polyester with other fabrics. Read the label and feel the material. Get to know how polyester can provide that special night with a new twist.

Spandex

Spandex is a synthetic fiber made from polyurethane, sometimes called Elastane. It’s elastic, durable, lightweight and resistant to moisture. Almost 60 years old, Spandex has seen a major evolution in the fabric. Created to replace the use of rubber in underwear for women... Spandex became the rage once Olivia put them on in Grease.

Spandex provides little support for men by itself. Spandex is often combined with other fabrics. Offering the support people need and body hugging fabric every gay man loves. It’s breathable, draws moisture from the skin, and very form fitting.

Polyester spandex blends are used in compression shorts, swimwear. And let's not forget about underwear that puts on a show. Polyester spandex blend fabric is great for running, biking, and working out. Or just showing off in meggings.

Modal

Modal is a rayon crafted from beech trees. It's similar in texture to silk or cotton. But it's less likely to fade or shrink. Most companies combine it with spandex. Creating one of the best fabrics for everyday underwear.

Modal keeps its shape, resists wrinkles. It can be dyed in vibrant colors that don't run or fade. What you'll really notice most about this fabric... it's oh so soft on your skin.

Modal absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton and won't pill from friction. But it doesn't trap moisture and odors like cotton.

This is a luxury fabric that's comfortable to wear all day. It offers moderate support and lots of movement. Modal is not the first choice for a heavy work out such as biking, running, or cross fit. It's the perfect choice for daily activities and avoiding swamp crotch.

Nylon

Nylon material has been around for nearly 100 years, developed as an alternative to silk. It’s a synthetic fabric made from petroleum. Nylon can be made thinner than other fabrics. Making it useful for all types of underwear designs.

During heavy workouts, nylon alone will keep your skin and crotch dry. It just won’t last as long as other materials. It’s also prone to snags, pilling and tears. So it’s commonly combined with cotton to help it last longer. Nylon cotton blends provides a higher level of comfort and more breathability too.

Nylon is an okay choice for everyday underwear. But it’s a great choice for special occasions or for putting on a show. Mostly because the lower durability. You’ll get more daily mileage out of other fabrics.

Supplex® Nylon
Supplex® nylon is nylon that looks and feels like cotton fabric. It’s breathable and comfortable to wear. Supplex® nylon is perfect for every day and vigorous activities. Thanks to its stretch quality.

Supplex® nylon can take dyes and vary in thicknesses. Keeping its form and color after multiple uses. It’s also waterproof, washable, and dries quickly. Makit it perfect fabric for underwear while traveling.

Conclusion

Today you have a huge variety of colors, fits, and designs to express your sexy and active sides. When shopping for new underwear… Choose the cut that shows off your stuff and fits how you like. Pick the fabric that’s ready for the activity or event. Visit Undies & Lube and let your wildest fantasies fly.

The Gay Vegans: Iran Protests

By Dan Hanley

It is difficult at best to get accurate news about what has been happening in Iran in the last week. I do my best to find credible threads on Twitter and pass them along.

What I know, and the sole reason for this post, is that thousands are protesting even though they know they can be jailed, tortured and even killed.

The least I can do as a blogger is to help spread the word.

If you are on Twitter, search #IranProtests for current updates. Then retweet what you find. As fellow activists, we can support those risking their lives by spreading the word on the protests.

Nice to See StevieB: Starting Somethin'

By StevieB

Mike, my single and available roommate, and I share quite the great house. We think so, anyway. Great views, great kitchen. The only downside is that there is only a one-car garage. This, of course is not a point of contention as we have simply decided to swap out the garage on a monthly basis. On the first of the month, the other guy gets to start parking their vehicle in the tight garage. This morning was the first full day for my Jeep to be snug inside, whilst Mikes Sportage had to bare the freezing temps. At precisely 5:14AM I heard Mikes super-fancy toothbrush spring to life through our bathrooms’ common wall. I am not sure why his electric toothbrush is so frickin' loud, But maybe the more money you spend on a toothbrush the louder it is to instill a sense that it is doing a great job.

Since I knew that in seven minutes time, Mike would come bounding out of his bedroom, insert toast into his mouth and make for the door, I thought I would treat him. Grabbing his keys I made my way to my bedroom window. I saw Mike's car sitting out in the cold, shivering in its first night in the frost and snow. I pressed the Remote Start fob on his key chain.... excited about how happy my best friend will be when he is greeted to a warm car.

Nothing.

Well, his fob is different than mine... I kept pressing it over and over. The car just sat there; un-started.

I examined the key fob....."G-enie" was the logo upon it. "Funny, Genie makes garage door openers AND remote starts?" This is when I glanced over and noticed that the garage door was making yet another round of its fiftieth open and down sequence. Turns out Mike does not have a remote start on this car. I carefully returned his keys to the kitchen bar and continued my morning routine perplexed what happened to his remote start... thingy.

Turns out he has not installed a remote start on this car yet. Since he buys cars so often, serves him right to have a cold car.
