Gay Country Artist Chase Sansing shoots Music Video for “Begins with You” at Pride Festivals around the Country

Rising young country artist Chase Sansing has released the music video to accompany his single “Begins with You.” The Mississippi native shot the video at various locations throughout Nashville and incorporates footage from gay pride festivals in Louisville, Chicago, Murfreesboro and Nashville.

“I wrote this song two and a half years ago after coming out,” mentions Sansing. “After coming out, I felt like I could finally sing the songs I really wanted to sing. I grew up struggling with balancing being a country singer and also being gay because I knew the two didn’t mix that well.”

This is a struggle many musicians in Nashville face as the country music industry has not been as accepting of LGBT as the rest of the music world. Many country artists including Carrie Underwood, Maren Morris, Toby Keith and Little Big Town have been vocal about their support of same-sex marriage and equality, however the overall industry hasn’t been as supportive.

Sansing, now 24, wrote “Begins with You” a few days after coming out, and recorded it at Prime Cut Studio in Nashville. “I began traveling to pride festivals to interview and film people who struggled just like me. It took me two years to finish the project because I wanted to do it right.”

Additional video was shot at various Nashville locations including the memorable giraffe scenes shot as the Nashville Zoo.

“This song is basically my new start to being the singer I’ve always wanted to be because country music is about singing the truth and if I’m not singing the truth and what I'm truly feeling then I'm not singing country music. I wrote this song specifically to reach out to kids that are like me and are growing up in a small town thinking they are different and that there’s something wrong with them and that it’s a bad thing. I hope this song shows them that it’s not and they are perfect the way they are.”

Sansing offers an additional word of encouragement: “The most important thing I’d say about this song is that I hope it reaches a kid who feels like I did when I was keeping my secret from everyone. I hope it tells them that it's okay.”

Stonewall Fitness: Hacks of "Health Hacks"

By Dirk Smith
Every few weeks, if not days there is always an article floating around social media and the internet. Often titled “top health hacks” or some variation of the sort. Now with the increasing cost of health care and lack of access for it, it’s easy for us to click on the link and hope to discover the little tricks and secrets we can use to be healthy and prevent disease.

Everything from onions in the socks, rubbing banana peels on our faces, essential oils, PH balanced water, lemon-honey-ginger-water, doing that little finger exercise program that the old lady on PBS in her wind breaker use to have, Kegels. There was even a weird one that had you drinking Olive Oil straight from the bottle in between meals. Even to some of the more mainstream things like “Reverse Osmosis Filtered Water” to sitting on an exercise ball at work and yes… even standing desks. There is no short of whacky and outright weird things people will do all in the name of better health. They’re not all necessarily bad either, but while it is easy to think that you can cure cancer with PH balanced water or onions on your face. People often will turn right around and fill their body with junk food while sitting on the couch and negating any supposed “benefit” that their cheap health hacks might have.

Going back to the old school, it all comes down to healthy eating habits and exercise. I am sure you’re rolling your eyes right now because that’s what everybody says, but it requires work and doesn’t always include cookies. Your body has the infrastructure and ability to fight almost any kind of disease it comes across, from the flu to cancer, Parkinson’s and depression. Eating junk food and living a sedentary lifestyle, that infrastructure starts to degrade and slows down, lessening the body’s ability to prevent and fight disease, making you more prone to infection.

The body lives by a rule, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Everything from muscle strength, brain cells, blood cells and even muscle, bones, and yes… you’re immune system too. When you exercise, you are creating minor stress on the body that acts as a “rehearsal” in that your body breaks down in many ways to rebuild itself bigger, stronger and faster. It gets rid of the old and brings in the new. This is a “rehearsal” in the way that when something tries to infect the body, such as a virus, bacteria and even cancer. The body is better prepared to fight it off, destroy it and dispose of it. In addition whatever damage might be done the body can help rebuild it. This is the same concept that makes vaccines effective. With vaccines, you introduce a dead virus into your body and it activates the immune system to create anti-bodies to fight and kill it. The vaccine acts as a “rehearsal” for the body so that if a live version of the vaccine virus attempts to infect you, the body is ready to fight it off.
Through healthy eating habits and daily exercise/ physical activity, you are building your body’s infrastructure to be more strong, resilient and better prepared to combat disease. This is the best health hack you can give yourself because you’re filling your gas tank with premium fuel and not cooking grease. The so called “health hacks” might be effective, but if you don’t give your body every opportunity to do what it does best, the “health hack” ultimately achieves nothing. Are you a goal-oriented individual looking for some extra guidance in your training? California Sanctuary Cities Case Gets a Boost from LGBT Groups

The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), Transgender Law Center (TLC), Centro Legal De La Raza, and El/La Para Translatinas filed an amicus brief this week in City and County of San Francisco v. Trump, the California case challenging Trump’s executive order attacking sanctuary cities. These organizations work on behalf of LGBT immigrants, including asylum seekers and victims of trafficking. The case is currently pending before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Sanctuary policies ensure that all community members, especially those most prone to exploitation and abuse, can report crimes and discrimination, and access essential services regardless of their immigration status. These policies essentially serve as don’t-ask policies regarding immigration status for witnesses, victims, and low-level criminal arrests. The brief argues that Trump’s Executive Order would force local jurisdictions to undermine public safety by creating a permanent underclass of people who are afraid to report crimes or even discrimination and harassment to public officials. These harms are not only irreparable, they are intolerable in communities like San Francisco and Santa Clara, home to some of the largest immigrant and LGBT communities in the nation.

“Trump’s attack on communities like San Francisco and Santa Clara prioritizes dangerous and discriminatory immigration policies over public safety,” said NCLR Senior Staff Attorney Amy Whelan. “At NCLR, we’ve worked with client victims of severe domestic violence or rape who, because of sanctuary policies, felt safe calling the police and seeking the medical care and help they needed. When communities trust each other and can work together, everyone is safer.”

California is home to one-quarter of the nation’s 43.2 million immigrants. Immigrants comprise 30 percent of the San Francisco Metropolitan Area population and 37 percent of the Santa Clara, San Jose, and Sunnyvale Metropolitan Area—which is the second largest community of immigrants in the United States.

The brief details the irreparable harms communities would suffer if forced to abandon sanctuary policies, including harms to public safety, public health, and the ability to combat discrimination and other forms of abuse, all of which are compelling government interests. It cites the more than 60 law enforcement leaders who have spoken out about how the elimination of such policies makes it harder for them to do their job and keep communities safe: “If a portion of the public is afraid to report crimes and testify, the police and prosecutors cannot effectively investigate and prosecute criminal activities, including violent crimes.”

Also included in the brief are personal stories, such as from Guatemalan immigrant Danny Sigui who witnessed and reported a murder in Rhode Island. After testifying, state officials reported Sigui’s immigration status to federal authorities, and he was subsequently deported. Segui stated, ““[i]f I had known they would take my liberty, that they would take my children away from me, that they would put me [in immigration detention], I would [not have reported the crime or testified at the killer’s trial].”

In the underlying cases, the City and County of San Francisco and Santa Clara County filed federal lawsuits against President Donald Trump and members of his administration challenging his January 25, 2017 Executive Order threatening to deny all federal funding to state and local governments that fail to comply with Trump’s immigration enforcement plan. The lawsuits, which were consolidated, challenge the President’s authority to unilaterally impose conditions on federal funds—a power the Constitution places exclusively in the hands of Congress—as well as the blanket denial of all federal funds, the vast majority of which have no connection to immigration or law enforcement. The district court ruled in favor of San Francisco and Santa Clara and permanently enjoined the portion of the Order regarding federal funding. That order is currently on appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, where the amicus was filed.

Attorneys at Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher LLP represent the amici organizations.

Andrea Gibson: "my whole life is just a boomerang valentine, coming right back at me"

Genderqueer poet and spoken word artist Andrea Gibson sat down with Billboard’s Soul Sisters podcast for an in-depth interview that posted on Valentines Day to discuss their new album ‘Hey Galaxy’ and to explore the ways their recent album, specifically their love poems, are politically charged simply by existing in this current climate.

RuPaul's Drag Race Returns for 10th Season - and Untucked is Back!

On the heels of VH1’s industry leading ten consecutive quarters of YoY ratings growth (P18-49) – the best streak across broadcast and cable – and following the three-time Emmy Award-winning season nine of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the fiercest competition on primetime returns with a historic 10th season. Each supersized, 90-minute episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will give fans more fashion, lip-syncs and drag than ever before. The new season premieres on VH1 on Thursday, March 22, followed by the popular, Emmy  Award-nominated after-show “RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked.”

“To celebrate a decade of Drag Race we’ve pulled out all the stops. The queens, the challenges and the shenanigans are off the mother-tucking charts,” said executive producer and two-time Emmy Award-winning host RuPaul. “And I’m thrilled that Untucked is back on VH1. ‘Cause, henny, if you ain’t watching Untucked, you’re only getting half the story. Okurrr?”

“RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked” gives viewers an uncensored, behind-the-scenes look at each episode of the main competition. During “Untucked,” cameras reveal conversations not seen on the main show as the queens anxiously wait to learn their fate and who will need to lip sync for their life to avoid the week’s elimination.

Fischerspooner Release "Overtly Queer" New Album 'Sir'

Iconic art-pop group Fischerspooner released their first album in nearly a decade, Sir, yesterday via Ultra Records. Entirely produced by Michael Stipe, the album presents a resistant narrative with an overtly queer and celebratory body of work in response to the current atmosphere in America. The collection of erotically-charged, yet profound songs was crafted by Spooner and Stipe at Michael's home in Athens, GA, alongside Michael's close collaborator Andy LeMaster.

In celebration, they share their captivating new video for “Butterscotch Goddam,” which was directed by Carlo Van de Roer. Roer said about the project, “The song is about a tumultuous love affair. We shot the video entirely in-camera, using optical devices and new filmmaking tools to play with the push and pull of a dichotomous relationship, and the accumulating distortion of reality that comes with that."
