One Colorado: Senate Judiciary Committee votes to weaken Colorado Civil Rights Division

By Daniel Ramos, Executive Director, One Colorado

The State Senate Judiciary Committee just voted to weaken protections for Coloradans who have been discriminated against and make it harder to file a claim and seek justice through the Colorado Civil Rights Division.

Contact your state senator now and ask them to pass the House version of the bill to ensure a clean reauthorization of the Colorado Civil Rights Division and Commission.

The House passed a bipartisan bill that is a clean reauthorization of the Division, ensuring it will protect Coloradans’ civil rights as it has for decades. But this afternoon, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee added amendments that would not only make it more difficult for Coloradans who have been discriminated against to seek justice, but would weaken protections for Coloradans who have been discriminated against.

These amendments are solutions in search of problems. CLICK HERE to contact your state senator and ask them to vote for a clean reauthorization of the Colorado Civil Rights Division.

Protecting the civil rights of every Coloradan across the state should not be a political issue. We need to make sure the members of the State Senate know that these amendments don’t belong in this bill, and that they should pass a clean reauthorization of the CCRD that doesn’t include these amendments.

Click here and contact your state senator today to ask them to remove these amendments and pass a clean reauthorization of the Colorado Civil Rights Division.

PS: Once you're done emailing your state senator, share our statement on the weakening of the Colorado Civil Rights Division on Facebook.

TWINS - Taste of Peppermint

Today, the Atlanta-based producer, synth wunderkind and CGI Records and DKA label head TWINS (AKA Matt Weiner) shared the video for the third single from his recently announced debut record, That Which Is Not Said, out May 4th via 2MR. The video, which was filmed on Adult Swim's Bloodfeast show, is a disorienting, brightly colored and highly saturated VHS-quality video for "Taste of Peppermint," which follows on the heels of the previously released singles, "Stuck" and "Glass Breaks Glass".

Speaking on the track, Weiner says"'Taste of Peppermint' was the first song that I wrote and recorded after I moved and had set my studio back up in the new house. Lyrically the song deals with the bittersweet feelings that come with taking a chance, making a change, and a leap forward, unsure of where you're going to land, but coming out the other side knowing that nothing can ever seem quite the same as it used to seem and learning to live with the changes. Musically, it was one of those songs that just came together reasonably effortlessly, I still have no idea how I came up with that weird drum/synth break in the intro, sometimes you just have to let your b

Nice to See StevieB: Purgatory

By StevieB

If there is such a thing as Purgatory, in the afterlife, I know what my Purgatory will look like. If it is like the Catholics describe it; a place of suffering inhabited by the souls of sinners who are expiating their sins before going to heaven, then I can tell what it looks like.

My personal purgatory will be spent wandering around the prepared foods department of a Whole foods.

Hours are spent with me dazed and confused moving from one bar to the next. Approaching the soup bar to squish the ladle down in over-cooked chicken noodle soup, or white bean chili. Then, to the deli counter to gaze upon the chicken wraps. Starving for something, yet not sure how the normal people of the world make a decision in a sea of choices.

Last night, I approached the area with the intent to pick up dinner. The boyfriend quickly made some healthy choices, and disappeared. Leaving me to fend for myself. I had the look of an eight-year-old, who after hiding in the middle of a clothing rack full of women’s blouses, emerged to find his Mom, gone. I was alone in Hell Foods. I entered the Whole Foods convincing everyone around me that it was a “soup night.” Only to find none of the eighteen dozen soups to be quite right. Maybe salad…..? no. It was either malaise, or my fear of food commitment that sent me into the desert for a plastic-boxed food vision quest.

What seemed to be hours later the boyfriend called out from the edge of the desert. “Ready?” He asked munching on kelp-kale fun crisps. I left with a tiny container of tomato soup. My soul still hovering over the olive bar.

Give OUT Day is This Week! Support the Local LGBTQ Nonprofits that Support our Community

Give OUT Day is coming up on April 19 and it's the ONLY national day of giving for the LGBTQ community – a 24-hour online fundraising event that unites donors and nonprofit organizations from across the country to raise critically needed funds.

LGBTQ nonprofits power our movement for equality and justice and are critical to making sure that LGBTQ people have access to the support and services that they need. For decades and decades, from bar fundraisers and penny jars to gala fundraisers and major gifts, individual donors have funded progress at every step.

Give OUT Day follows and builds on this great tradition. Throughout this day-long event, thousands of people make gifts to support a vast array of LGBTQ nonprofits across the country, ranging from the arts to social services agencies, advocacy groups to sports leagues, community centers to health care nonprofits. Monetary donations are the most direct way to help a nonprofit make an impact: they allow nonprofits to allocate funds where they are most needed.

Since its inception in 2013, over 33,000 individual donors have contributed more than $4 million and supported more than 600 different organizations in every part of the country. These funds have translated directly into services, advocacy, and programs that help tens of thousands of LGBTQ people. Participating nonprofits also receive trainings and marketing support, and a chance to win bonus prize money.

The Gay Vegans: Speaking Out Against Sexism in Recovery

By Dan Hanley

I have written about being in recovery. The fellowship in recovery saved my life, and adds so much to my life. I want to make this clear as I share that recently I have had to listen to sexist bullshit from men attending meetings. Making sexual comments about women, women there to get sober. This is not new, I just haven’t personally heard it in a while.

I keep thinking about it. I keep thinking about the need to create safe spaces for women. If a woman who is trying to get clean and sober does not feel safe at a meeting where others are gathered for the same reason, well that is simply a fucked up situation. Then I think of others, like people of color and members of the LGBTQ communities, but that’s another post.

Alcoholism and drug addiction kill people. In fact, they are killing more people today than ever. We must ensure everyone coming to a meeting to get clean or sober doesn’t experience harassment. We need to talk about it. We need to call it out.

Yes, this is a rant. If you work the twelve steps and are familiar with the program, rest assured I am working my program around this.

Thanks for reading.
