Honey Soundsystem: The Sounds of Pride

On Honey Soundsystem’s monthly broadcast, founding member Jackie House explores the sound of his own crew and the often-unsung heroes of their wider world. Bonding over their shared love of timeless sound, iconic imagery, indulgent behavior and attractive men, San Francisco’s Honey Soundsystem is a collective of disk jockeys, musicians, performers, label-owners and designers. They’re a force in American dance music’s queer underground, but they’re only part of the story of what’s going on here – they’re part of a network of parties and scenes spanning the length of the continent, with each sweaty dancefloor an integral part of the whole.

Honey Soundsystem is a San Francisco based collective of three. Jacob Sperber, Jason Kendig and Robert Yang came together inspired by pivotal gay underground parties and dance music history, who offered a take on dance music in direct opposition to what was blaring on mainstream club speakers. They bond over a shared love of timeless sounds, iconic imagery, the complete look, indulgent behavior, and most of all, attractive men. The boys dedicate time and passion into archivist work, which resulted in unearthing the lost gay porn soundtracks of San Francisco’s hi-nrg producer Patrick Cowley released on Honey’s flagship HNYTRX and Josh Cheon’s Dark Entries. The crew throws their heart into event production and are known to build massive, elaborate, party-specific installations. Honey boys have their fingers in the world of music production, remixing and djing parties around the world.

DNC On Second Anniversary Of Pulse Massacre

Tom Perez released this statement on the second anniversary of the massacre at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida:

The Gay Vegans: We Are Not Going to be Saved in November

Many of those who are over Donald Trump and the Republican politicians complicit with him and his policies are counting the days to November. Come election day all will be well and the Democrats will take control of the house and senate, along with state governments across the country.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are working on their messaging, solidifying their candidates, and promising their base that they will survive this.

A lot will have to happen in order for them to be wrong. First, we need to have amazing candidates. Second, we need to fund them. And third, we need to vote for them. Super easy, right? Not really.

There is plenty of anti-Trump action going on in any social media platform you look at. It’s easy to post something disagreeing with him or those complicit, calling names or sharing an article. It’s not as easy to get out the vote and to engage with those who might possibly vote Republican in November. Not easy, but possible.

The one reality dose that I hope to bring with this post is that positive results for us in November are a long way from becoming reality. We must vote, and get out the vote.

If you want to wake up on November 7th to something different than what we have today, I urge you to join others who feel the same and take action. Work locally. Find out who is running, up and down the ballot. Donate. Engage. Talk about policy. And please, don’t take anything for granted.

Books: I Was Cleopatra

Dennis Abrams' young adult novel I Was Cleopatra is a provocative historical fictional memoir of a boy actor in Shakespeare's London that Kirkus Reviews called "a poignant coming of age tale."

In Shakespeare’s time, women were not allowed to appear on stage so female parts were played by boy actors. In I Was Cleopatra, readers meet John Rice — perhaps the most acclaimed boy actor of them all. It is believed by many that John Rice originated the roles of Lady Macbeth, Cleopatra and Cordelia, and this fictional memoir explores his life both on and off the stage.

Dennis Abrams is currently working on his next book What Happens After, which will be a fictionalized account of the Pulse nightclub shooting and its emotional aftermath.

NMAC: 'Gag Rule' Will Deprive Low-Income Communities of HIV Testing and Care

NMAC has announced it opposes the Trump Administration’s proposed “gag rule” to remove Title X family planning funds from providers that offer abortion services or referrals. Such providers are a vital, life-saving point of entry to care for people living with HIV and to prevention services for those at higher risk for HIV, particularly people of color and those in lower-income communities.

“As a women living with HIV for over 27 years and working on issues across women’s health, I feel strongly that this proposed rule is a threat to HIV testing, care, and prevention in lower-income communities, especially communities of color where such services are desperately needed,” said Linda Scruggs, Director of NMAC’s Leadership Pipeline. “Centers like Planned Parenthood are often a point of entry for people seeking HIV and STD testing and treatment. They provide vital HIV prevention services, like Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for people at risk for HIV, and linkage to care so that people living with HIV can live longer and reduce the chance of transmitting the virus to others.”

“The loss of funding for these centers will cause many of them to close, depriving already-underserved communities of options for the quality health care they have every right to,” said Scruggs. “We cannot stand by and allow communities that already have very few options for quality health care risk losing what little they already have. Through this rule, this Administration is putting the lives and well-being of countless Americans at risk.”

Arts & Ales Festival Returns to Arvada Center

A celebration of local art, craft brews, food, and music, the second annual Arts & Ales Festival returns to the grounds of the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities Saturday, August 11, 2018. 

The one-day festival will feature ongoing entertainment and activities, including art booths and main stage entertainment featuring popular local bands throughout each day. The event also includes hands-on art activities for kids.

ETC, IGLTA and VISITFLANDERS explore the potential of LGBTQ travel in Europe

June 2018, the European Travel Commission (ETC), the Flemish tourist board VISITFLANDERS and the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) will host the Educational Forum on LGBTQ Tourism. The event aims at advancing knowledge on LGBTQ tourism in Europe, discussing the status quo of Europe as a safe and welcoming destination for LGBTQ tourists, investigating new ways to strengthen the region’s attractiveness as a LGBTQ-friendly destination, and understanding the future evolution of LGBTQ travel.

By recognizing the economic and social significance of LGBTQ tourism, tourism businesses and destinations can become a catalyst of change in advancing and tackling social and civil issues of the LGBTQ community and improving the lives of LGBTQ residents and travellers in Europe. The forum will create a space to share knowledge and best practices and to increase social responsibility in the sector; it will provide destinations and businesses with insights and tools to understand and cater for LGBTQ travellers, to build inclusive offers that respond to the true diversity of the segment, and to become ambassadors for human rights and promoters of inclusive policy development.

The discussion will be supported by the new ETC and IGLTA Foundation joint research project on LGBTQ tourism in Europe, which focuses on the current state, prospects and opportunities of LGBTQ tourism in Europe, in view of worldwide trends and expected evolution. Findings from the report will be presented during the conference by its author, Peter Jordan. The report results will provide a framework and support for the forum conversation.

The Forum will take place at the Hilton Brussels Grand Place and will be hosted by Robert Davershot. The event will gather tourism businesses, destination tourism boards on national, regional and local levels, leading global organisations, human rights NGOs and EU policy makers. Speakers include Piet De Bruyn, the Council of Europe; Peter De Wilde, President ETC and CEO VISITFLANDERS; Thomas Bachinger, Vienna Tourism Board; Mattej Valencic, Pink Week Slovenia; and Mateo Asensio, Turisme de Barcelona, among others.
