OutRight Action International: LGBTIQ People Will Suffer from SCOTUS Decision to Uphold Travel Ban

Today the Supreme Court of the US upheld President Trump’s travel ban which strictly limits travel to the US from five majority Muslim nations as well as North Korea and Venezuela, in the name of national security and “counter-terrorism.” The restricted majority-Muslim nations are Syria, Libya, Iran, Yemen, and Somalia. Although the ban has been contested on the grounds of religious discrimination, the Supreme Court today ruled that such a decree, on the basis of national security, is within the President’s authority.

Jessica Stern, Executive Director, OutRight Action International commented on the ban saying,
“It is deeply distressing that the Supreme Court has voted to uphold this ban that institutionalizes xenophobia under the guise of ‘national security.’ As much as Judge Kennedy claims the ban is “neutral on its face,” we know it is meant to target a specific group - Muslims.

Anyone seeking refuge from violence and persecution, including LGBTIQ individuals who face criminalization in five of the countries on the list, now has one more door closed in their face. ”

Victory Fund Endorses 37 More LGBTQ Candidates for 2018, Spotlights Seven New Transformative Races

Today LGBTQ Victory Fund, the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders to public office, endorsed 37 more LGBTQ candidates, raising to 170 the total number of candidates endorsed this cycle. Three newly endorsed candidates and four previously endorsed candidates were awarded Spotlight status, a designation given to state or local candidates in history-making races. Additionally, five candidates were awarded Game Changer status in their statewide races or campaigns for U.S. Congress. Spotlight and Game Changer candidates receive additional support and services from Victory Fund to ensure they win on Election Day.

Among the storylines from the most recent endorsements:
Deep Red States See Groundbreaking, Viable LGBTQ State Legislative Candidates
An unprecedented number of viable LGBTQ candidates are running for state legislatures in deep red states with little LGBTQ representation, including Alaska, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Montana, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and West Virginia.
Newly endorsed Spotlight candidate Elias Rojas would become the first openly LGBTQ state legislator in Alaska if elected. Neil Rafferty and Felicia Stewart, both running for the Alabama House of Representatives and just upgraded to Spotlight endorsement status, would be the only two openly LGBTQ elected officials in the entire state if elected. Spotlight candidate Amelia Marquez, running for the Montana House of Representatives, would be just the second openly trans person to be elected to and serve in any state legislature. And spotlight candidate Cody Thompson would bring LGBTQ representation back to the West Virginia state legislature and would be one of just two openly LGBTQ elected officials in the state.
Previously endorsed candidates in Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Tennessee, Texas and Utah could also make history with victories in deep red states.
Statewide LGBTQ Officeholders Could Double in November
Three statewide LGBTQ candidates received Game Changer endorsements, bringing to 18 the total number currently endorsed. Kim Coco Iwamoto would become the first openly trans person elected to a statewide executive office if she wins her bid for Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii. Kim is the only trans person ever elected statewide in the U.S., having previously served two terms on the Hawaii Board of Education.
Matt Pelikan, running for Minnesota Attorney General, and Josh Tenorio, running for Lieutenant Governor of Guam, received Game Changer endorsements and would each be the first openly LGBTQ statewide officials in their respective state and territory. Currently just seven LGBTQ people serve in statewide positions, including only one out governor.
LGBTQ Congressional Candidates Could Increase Representation in U.S. House
Sharice Davids and Rufus Gifford received Game Changer endorsements in their races for U.S. Congress – bringing to fourteen the total number of current U.S. House candidates Victory Fund has endorsed. Davids would be the first openly LGBTQ member of Congress to represent Kansas if elected – and one of just eight LGBTQ elected officials in the entire state. She would also be the first Native American Congresswoman in U.S. history. Gifford would be just the second out member of Congress from Massachusetts.

Are You a Colorado Educator? Register for the Institute on LGBTQ Inclusive Education Practices

A two-day statewide educator Institute on June 28 & 29 will bring educators, administrators, and other youth-serving adults together to engage in professional development around LGBTQ-inclusive educational practices. Research continues to show that school professionals lack the knowledge, resources, and support needed to appropriately build classrooms, curriculum, and school environments that are safe and affirming of all students. This Institute will be by educators/ for educators. Facilitators and session leaders will be people who work with youth in schools, classrooms, and community organizations. We stand by the idea that in teaching, "practice makes practice." All sessions will include resources, practical strategies, and time for participants to practice the work of creating safe and affirming schools.

The Gay Vegans: Challenge Those In Power

By Dan Hanley

I seldom stay out of politics with this blog. With all that is going on in our country, especially on our southern border, I just have to write about it. I don’t need to tell you about what is going on, or who is to blame or who is right and who is wrong, but to remind you that you the reader are not powerless in this situation.
It took me a minute to find my power. I saw the news. And more news. Then I heard the tape. I was angry, and in tears. Then I saw those speaking out for the families at the border get attacked, and attacked. I honestly don’t care if this happened before or if some think that what is happening is OK. I care that, in our name, families are being ripped apart and children are experiencing trauma.

You, especially if you are as sickened by this as I am, have the power to make change.

First, as I often say on social media, I urge you to spend less time attacking President Trump and more time attacking those complicit, the Republicans in Congress. There is an election in November and every seat of the House of Representatives is up for grabs. Do whatever you can to elect someone who is sickened as well and who will not support the President.

Next, donate to RAICES or Al Otro Lado. Both groups are working 24/7 to help families who have been separated.

While others will spend time blaming, finger pointing, saying things like “Obama did this too” or name calling, we must focus on voting those complicit out, continually telling the stories of families torn apart, and speaking out for those families until they are reunited. While bickering and fighting go on, children are experiencing trauma, sometimes hundreds of miles away from their parent. The longer they are separated, the better the chances they may never be reunited.

Vote. Remember the children. Keep asking about them, about where they are and when they will be reunited. There are many who want us to forget and move on. We can’t.

Thank you for reading.

Travel: IGLTA Partners with ETC and VISITFLANDERS to Advance LGBTQ travel in Europe

The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association united with The European Travel Commission and the Flemish tourist board VISITFLANDERS to present the Educational Forum on LGBTQ Tourism at the Hilton Brussels Grand Place on 21 June. The event provided a preview of key findings from The Handbook on LGBTQ Tourism in Europe, scheduled for release next month as a joint research project from ETC and the IGLTA Foundation. Forum speakers also addressed ways to make Europe safer and more inclusive for LGBTQ travelers, shared best practices for reaching the diverse segments of this market, and discussed the future evolution of LGBTQ tourism in Europe.

“We are proud to be a partner of ETC’s first event and publication on the LGBTQ travel market and to engage many of our European members in this important discussion,” said IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella, who delivered opening remarks at the forum along with VISITFLANDERS CEO & ETC President Peter De Wilde. “While Europe is a global leader for the LGBTQ market segment, not every country is equal in its LGBTQ inclusiveness—and the research clearly showed that inclusive destinations have the best opportunity to attract diverse visitors.”

Handbook author Peter Jordan presented the first look at this soon-to-be-released research, which focuses on perceptions of 35 states within Europe from LGBTQ travelers in five long-haul markets: Russia, China, Japan, Brazil and the United States. An open-minded culture topped the list of reasons for LGBTQ travelers to select a destination and LGBTQ events were the leading choice for their next visit to Europe.

“More tolerance, respect and understanding are the basic principles for Europe to become the ultimate inclusive tourism destination worldwide,” said ETC Executive Director Eduardo Santander. “We are very proud to see from the results of the study and the discussions today that Europe is seen as a highly desirable travel destination for the LGBTQ segment. But we know that we should not be complacent as there is still room for improvement. ETC remains committed to this goal, and events like the Educational Forum are a step in the right direction.”

Forum speakers represented tourism businesses, human rights organizations, and media, including Thomas Bachinger, Vienna Tourist Board; Mattej Valencic, Luxury Slovenia; Mateo Asensio, Turisme de Barcelona; Paulien De Groot, transgender activist; Anna Shepherd, ILGA Europe; Patrick Bontinck, visit.brussels; Kaspars Zalitis, Baltic Pride; and Sean Howell of Hornet.

“We want to see Flanders evolving towards a society in which sexual orientation will never be a question nor issue,” said De Wilde, who also moderated a panel discussion on communicating diversity to the industry and travelers with journalists from DIVA in the UK, blu media group in Germany and Out & About in Denmark. “On the contrary, we want the LGBTQ traveler to be treated with integrity and respect. VISITFLANDERS will continue to break down barriers and will focus on promoting inclusive tourism.”

The Handbook on LGBTQ Tourism in Europe is scheduled for release on 12 July and will be available for free download at iglta.org/research.
