Logo to Premiere 'Light in the Water' Documentary About Gay Swim Team

Next week, the three-time Emmy Award-winning Logo Documentary Films will be airing the first film in their upcoming doc slate: Light in the Water. The film reveals the untold story of a group of gay men and women who found one another through their love of competitive swimming, ultimately becoming a family and a force for the LGBTQ sports movement.

The West Hollywood Aquatics Team – who also go by “WH2O” - were pioneers in gay sports. With a current roster of more than 180 individuals, the organization initially grew out of a group of athletes training for the first Gay Games in 1982. During a time when being gay and being an athlete was considered an oxymoron and the AIDS crisis only increased homophobia across the U.S., WH2O prioritized inclusion and dignity and combated stigma.

As one of the original members states, “if you could swim, you could live…or at least you were alive for that moment.” And another: “swimming was about celebrating and rising above all the darkness that was around us…and striving to show the word that we are not being wiped out by an illness.”

Saintseneca - Ladder to the Sun

Saintseneca has shared a video for "Ladder to the Sun," the latest from their new album, Pillar of Na, available for pre-order  now and due out 8/31 via ANTI- Records. The FADER, who premiered the video today are calling it a "brilliant, upbeat song" that "will help you get through the day."

Last week, Saintseneca released a video "Frostbiter," the lead single from Pillar of Na, which NPR praised by saying "with 'Frostbiter,' Saintseneca swings towards bright, beautiful new places... Zac Little's songs often simmer in a sad swirl of death and esoterica, but his deadpan ruminations are buoyed by the sounds of exotic instruments, candy-colored pop hooks and many points in between."

Additionally, Saintseneca have also announced their first headline tour in 3 years in support of Pillar of Na, which kicks off with an album release show at Columbus' Wexner Center and comes to Denver's Larimer Lounge on October 27.

Beatles Tribute Concert at Red Rocks

It was in August of 1964 when the British invasion first came to Colorado with the group that started it all...the Beatles. If you love the Beatles you won’t want to miss the most unique, fun and affordable concert event of this summer at Red Rocks with The #1 Beatles Show in the World, “1964” The Tribute.

This group is hailed by critics and fans alike as the most authentic and enduring Beatles tribute in the world. Choosing songs from the pre-Sgt. Pepper era, “1964” recreates an early 60s live Beatles concert with period instruments, vintage costumes, hairstyles, onstage mannerisms, speaking voices, and unmistakable harmonies of the lads from Liverpool. Over thirty-four years of researching and performing at major concert venues on four different continents has made the “1964” group masters of their craft in capturing the essence of the Beatles live on stage.

This Anniversary celebrates Red Rocks Amphitheatre as one of four original concert sites still remaining from the Beatles first American tour in 1964.

The Gay Vegans: Animal Agriculture is in Bad Shape - Thoughts From Our Road Trip

By Dan Hanley

If our experiences during our 4000+ mile road trip are any indication, animal agriculture is in worse shape than ever.

One of these experiences was in Waterford, MI, a pretty small town north and west of Detroit. We found a place that served the Impossible burger and went with a bunch of family members. After enjoying a great meal we asked to see the manager to thank them for serving the Impossible burger. She joined us for a bit and during the conversation told us that they were “flying off of the shelves”!

In Omaha, we were lucky to get a table at Modern Love. An hour wait on a Sunday evening, typically a slow night for restaurants. Yet this place was packed. And an entirely plant-based menu.

In every grocery store we went to, non-dairy milks were everywhere. We were super-impressed that the grocery chain Meijer has large sections of plant-based food choices. Better yet, people are buying them. The Meijer in Midland, MI had more plant-based, vegan options than any grocery in LA.

I was thinking of all of this, and more, as we drove by transports filled with cows headed for slaughter. In the 100 degree heat, probably scared and definitely hungry as they cannot eat or drink 24 hours before being slaughtered, the end of animal agriculture will come too late for them.

Yet it is coming. We saw evidence of it all over the country, from LA to Michigan. There is also evidence in the drop in sales of cow’s milk and huge increases in the purchase of vegan/plant-based products. If I spent an hour doing research I could offer even more evidence.

Lastly, we also met so many people interested in veganism, interested in being healthier and saving the environment. Yet mostly, like us, wanting to stop paying people to kill and torture animals for their taste buds. More and more people all across the country are saying goodbye to the meat and dairy industries.

Thanks for reading. I’ll write another post later about some of our adventures during the road trip!

Act Now: House GOP votes to keep LGBTQ families from adopting

This week, Congressional Republicans passed a budget amendment that would allow taxpayer-funded adoption agencies to deny adoptions to LGBTQ families.

If this amendment isn’t removed, thousands of children in the adoption system could be denied a loving and stable home, simply because the prospective parents are LGBTQ. Congress needs to reject this amendment immediately – and they only will if they hear from you.

If this amendment stays in the funding bill for the U.S. Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, Colorado adoption and foster care organizations would be allowed to claim their religion gives them the right to deny children a loving family – solely because the applicants are LGBTQ.

Click here now and tell your Congressperson that this amendment needs to be removed because this policy will harm thousands of children and deny them permanent, loving homes.

Netta - Toy

After winning the coveted Eurovision Song Contest, Israeli pop maverick Netta’s viral smash “Toy” has been signed for the world by S-Curve Records/BMG.

Combining lyrics celebrating female empowerment with an irresistible groove, the track’s hypnotic hook — “I’m not your toy, stupid boy”— proves timely and topical. The New York Times chronicled the impact of “Toy” at Eurovision and dubbed it, “a pop anthem about female independence” and proclaimed, “a star is born.” A one-two punch of rapid fire beatboxing, bold body movements, and seismic vocals, the single vaulted to #1 on Spotify’s Viral 50 chart around the globe, claiming the top spot in the U.S., UK, and Australia, to name a few. Its wildly wonderful music video has generated 53 million-plus YouTube views to date.

GPCO adopts dues for locals and caucus membership of state council

Recently, the council of the The Green Party of Colorado (GPCO) unanimously adopted a proposal to collect dues from local parties and outreach caucuses as part of membership responsibilities on its state council and in proportion to council representation. The state council is the governing body of the GPCO.

Just like other Green state parties, as well as the Green Party of the United States, the Green Party of Colorado receives no money from corporate interests. Greens must fund their own party operations, and this measure is intended to begin a shift in party culture away from using the duopoly as an excuse for inaction, and toward a culture of proactive party building.

In the long term GPCO needs funds to assist with larger campaigns and statewide partisan candidates. Benefits provided to locals and caucuses by being dues-paying members of the state council include access to the online community organizing platform and education on using the platform, being part of a larger whole that can act in unison to achieve more localized objectives, building funds for candidates and issues statewide, partaking in revenue share/fundraising programs, campaign support and websites, outreach funding, etc.

Registered Greens and others are encouraged to help share the load, with either a recurring donation of any size or even a one-time donation. Updated bylaws are here, and our procedures and guidelines are here.
