Be A Hero. Support People Living With HIV

On August 23rd, Logo will be premiering Quiet Heroes, a documentary which focuses on two lesbian medical professionals who, during the peak of the AIDS crisis in Salt Lake City, become some of the only doctors willing to see AIDS patients in all of Utah. To connect the film to the modern-day HIV/AIDS epidemic, MTV has created a short PSA that highlights the modern day “heroes” who, despite outsized stigma and fear, are supporting their friends and loved ones living with HIV.

The PSA video features 5 HIV+ young people who are boldly speaking out against the stigma that people living with HIV still face today. On camera, these young people are given the chance to thank a hero in their lives for helping them through difficult moments in their journey, and unbeknownst to them, their heroes are hidden on set listening to the beautiful, warm thank-yous.

Michael Ausiello Lost His Husband to Cancer -- Now He's Built a Smurftastic Tribute to Him

Kit Cowan and Michael Ausiello
In one of the sweetest parts of Michael Ausiello’s acclaimed memoir, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies, the TVLine President and Editorial Director gushes about life with husband Kit Cowan.

The two are living in the greater Hudson Valley area, and running a local gift store that sells (among other things) Cowan’s antique, designer furniture pieces while also displaying Ausiello’s prized collection of Smurf memorabilia — a childhood obsession that’s held emotional weight for the New Jersey native.

Ausiello, 46, describes their time in the store with such affection. Cowan happens to be in the Smurf room, showing a customer one of the hundreds of thousands of Smurfs in the space, each “tastefully displayed” within museum-quality cabinets. Nearby, clear jellybean-like dispensers filled with identical Smurf figurines await for the purchase. And Cowan — who initially scoffed at Ausiello’s love of Smurfs — has, three decades into their relationship, finally become a “Smurf Expert” all his own.

After closing up for the night, the two make their way “down the quiet, twinkling street” together, off to celebrate another Christmas with one another.

But, sadly, it’s all just a dream. Because after an 11-month battle with a rare and brutal form of cancer, Cowan died in February 2015 at the age of 43. And 13 years after the two met and fell in love, Ausiello is now alone.

Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies recounts that love and loss, in a touching and tender tale filled with humor and hope. The hardcover edition was released last September and quickly became a best-seller, now currently in its fourth printing. A paperback edition arrives Sept. 18.

The success has kept coming from Ausiello from there. Last December, Jim Parsons’ That’s Wonderful Productions optioned the title for a feature film adaptation, with Parsons attached to play Ausiello. And then J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot came calling, teaming with Ausiello to develop a half-hour dramedy about his childhood in small-town New Jersey — a childhood that prominently featured that aforementioned Smurf collection.

Somewhere in there, Ausiello found time to check another item off his bucket list.

He went back to that longtime dream of creating a part store, part museum Smurf shrine. And on Tuesday, after seven months of work and a lot of teasing on social media, Ausiello finally unveiled The Blue Store: a spectacular, Smurftastic space in his Los Angeles home that’s very much a dream realized.

Christine and The Queens - 5 Dollars

Christine and The Queens today releases "5 dollars," the latest single to be lifted from her forthcoming, eagerly anticipated second album, Chris (out 9.21 via Because Music). The song arrives accompanied by a powerful video, by Colin Solal Cardo, who directed the video for "Doesn't matter," released last month to critical acclaim.

“The song is so tender, so disheveled,” explains Christine. “It’s dealing with some kind of love - the kind you can buy. It’s a literal interpretation. A note for a shag - how surprisingly soothing this can be! The power ratio runs clear, like water in your hands; it becomes a pure gesture of love, of ultimate consent.”

In the video, described as “American Gigolo with a twist,” Christine investigates and takes on the role of the outcast, those who exist on the invisible margins, and is seen getting ready, though for what and for whom is left unsaid. “The closet is segmented into two racks - suits and bondage. From there, I wouldn’t advise to conclude anything too drastic, since you’re glaring yourself, in an obscene fashion - voyeur. The hustler is also someone that allows you to project onto him or her, before disappearing to leave you alone with your phantasmes.”

Project Careaoke Launch to Benefit Denver Actors Fund

Project Careaoke, a new all-volunteer organization that exists to support a variety of grassroots, underfunded Colorado nonprofits by sponsoring karaoke-themed events on their behalf, has chosen Denver Actors Fund as its first beneficiary. On September 9, Project Careaoke will launch with a fun-filled evening at The Venue that is expected to result in the single biggest infusion of funds to the Denver Actors Fund in its five-year history. Tickets ($12) are now on sale at projectcareaoke.org

The entertaining program will include friendly competition between some of Colorado’s powerhouse musical-theatre performers — all of whom have received DAF assistance at some point. Each will sing a favorite karaoke song, with audiences voting on a champion with their donations. There also will be a live-art exhibition featuring local artist Hayley Steiner, and a live silent auction for items including a ticket to a famously canceled Led Zeppelin concert and unique, donated artwork from local Colorado artists. The evening takes place from 5-10 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, at The Venue, located at 1451 Cortez St. in Denver (Highway 36 and Pecos Street) and will culminate with a live concert by popular Denver rock band Float Like a Buffalo.

The evening’s hosts will be Jayson Payne from Jammin’ DJs and award-winning Denver comic actor Eric Mather. Among the confirmed karaoke performers are Faith Goins and Faith Ford, both of whom will appear next month in Town Hall Arts Center’s Green Day musical American Idiot; Melissa Swift-Sawyer, who starred for more than four years in the Denver Center’s long-running hit Always … Patsy Cline; and Traci J. Kern, vocal coach to many of the area's top performers.

The Denver Actors Fund is a modest source of immediate financial and practical relief when members of the Colorado theater community find themselves in situational medical need ranging from chemotherapy to car accidents to dental emergencies. The DAF, founded by former Denver Post theatre critic John Moore in 2013, has made more than $255,000 available to local theatre artists, along with hundreds of hours of service by more than 60 DAF volunteers.

Project Careaoke is the brainchild of co-founders Shayao McFarland and Stephanie Strong, who formed their nonprofit to give back to the local communities they love. McFarland has professional experience with a wide sector of businesses including Hewlett-Packard, Xerox Corporation and Grubb & Ellis Commercial Real Estate. Strong has 15 years of professional experience, including eight years with non-profits. “Many worthy, smaller, charitable organizations in Colorado are under-supported,” McFarland said. “Their mission is to serve, not fundraise.”

Brody Ray, First Out Transgender Musician to Progress to Judges’ Cuts on 'America's Got Talent'

The third time was the charm for Brody Ray, a transgender singer/songwriter. After auditioning for American Idol and The Voice, the outgoing country singer from Kearney, Nebraska finally advanced to the live auditions of America’s Got Talent and earned four "yeses" from judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel, and Heidi Klum, making him the first-ever out transgender musician to advance on the reality show. Brody Ray performed a powerful rendition of the song “Stand in The Light” by Jordan Smith.

“The judges, producers, staff, directors and camera crew of America’s Got Talent are some of the most amazing people I’ve had the honor to work with,” states Ray. “They were so kind and respectful to me, my family and my story. They gave me an opportunity and a platform to share my talents and reach a bigger audience than ever before.”

Ray was recently voted off the show, but is hard at work in Nashville recording a new EP of original material.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to have had such a successful and emotional first performance and to meet and make such an impactful connection with Simon, Heidi, Mel B and Howie. Their responses made me feel really validated for all the hard work and many years of struggle and overcoming. In that moment it felt like everything had come full circle.”

Brody has launched a GoFundMe page to help pay for his upcoming project. “I believe this is important, not for me, but for the entire LGBT community. Being able to perform on AGT was such a thrill for me, I hate that it was overshadowed by hatred. I hope my voice can be heard and hope that all transgender people continue to follow their dreams.”

Over the past few years, Brody Ray has crisscrossed North America, performing at pride festivals throughout the United States and Canada including: Palm Springs Pride, Ottawa Pride, Milwaukee PrideFest, Rainbow Pride in Spokane WA, and Mid-South Pride in Memphis, TN. He is scheduled to perform at Atlanta Pride in October.

Victory Fund Condemns Transphobic Attacks on Historic Transgender Candidate Christine Hallquist

While most news outlets reported on the historic nature of a transgender candidate being nominated for governor by a major American political party, several hosts and guests on Fox News attacked groundbreaking candidate Christine Hallquist because of her gender identity.

Yesterday evening on Tucker Carlson Tonight, conservative journalist Chadwick Moore claimed Hallquist won because of “transgender privilege” and that she can “get away with many, many things by being transgender.” He went on to say “nobody knows anything about her policies” and questioned her qualifications beyond being transgender, despite Vermont primary voters understanding well her long career as the chief executive of an energy utility company and her progressive vision for the state. Tucker Carlson agreed with the assertion. Chadwick then went on to attack her personal appearance and misgender her.

Wednesday night’s attack followed an incident earlier in the day, when host Ainsley Earhardt referred to Hallquist as “that transgender.”

LGBTQ Victory Fund President & CEO Mayor Annise Parker released the following statement about the Fox News attacks:

“For two straight cisgender white men on Fox News to bemoan ‘transgender privilege’ in a conversation about one of the few openly trans candidates in the entire nation requires extraordinary ignorance, at best. Christine was the chief executive of a well-respected energy utility company for more than 12 years and traveled the entire state sharing with voters her progressive vision for Vermont. They claimed Vermont primary voters know nothing beyond her gender identity while in fact the opposite is true – voters chose Christine because of her experience and positions, not because of her gender identity, and it is an insult to Vermont voters to say otherwise. To say trans candidates have ‘privilege’ is simply these two pundits spewing nonsense and hate – there are only 13 trans people in elected office nationwide, hardly a privileged group.

“Tucker Carlson and Chadwick Moore built their careers on attacking people because of who they are and are as responsible as anyone for the degradation of American political discourse. Their obsession with attacking a trailblazing trans candidate only continues this legacy. Vicious attacks on the qualifications and appearance of a gubernatorial candidate solely because she is transgender is intolerable and must be addressed by Fox News leadership. Fortunately, Vermont voters don’t carry the prejudiced views of some in the Fox News lineup."
