One Colorado: Can You Help Us Fight Back?

Via One Colorado:
The Koch Brothers just announced they are pouring in money to support Tim Neville – one of the most notoriously anti-LGBTQ state senators in Colorado – to stop us from winning a pro-equality majority in the Colorado State Senate this November.

Can you help us fight back? We need to raise $8,051 before midnight on Monday so we can send a piece of mail to voters in Tim Neville’s district about his anti-LGBTQ record.

We are less than 30 days from ballots being mailed and it is crucial that voters in Senate District 16 know that Senator Neville sponsored almost all of the bills to give individuals and businesses a license to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisxual, transgender, and queer Coloradans and their families. Will you help us reach our fundraising goal by midnight on Monday, so voters will know the truth about Tim Neville’s anti-LGBTQ voting record?

Nobuntu: From Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to the Lakewood Cultural Center

Lakewood Cultural Center welcomes Nobuntu to the stage in October. From Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, this five-member female a cappella ensemble performs a fusion of Zimbabwean-rooted music, Afro jazz, gospel and crossover. The women’s voices, energy and breathtaking performance is an experience that resonates with everyone.

The ensemble’s name is an African concept that values humbleness, love, purpose, unity and family from a woman’s perspective. Nobuntu is a production identified by its concept and philosophy, showing a new generation of young women singers who celebrate and preserve their culture, beauty and heritage through art. The ensemble’s concerts are accentuated by traditional colorful clothing, authentic dance movements and hand percussion instruments.

Nobuntu was founded in 2011 to address the absence of an all-female professional a cappella group in Zimbabwe. The release of its debut album in 2013 titled “Thina,” immediately took Nobuntu to countries such as Austria, Germany, Belgium and Czech Republic, playing in concert halls, theaters and festivals. The ensemble was nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards 2015. In 2016, Nobuntu released its second album called “Ekhaya,” which brought the group to North America for the first time. The album’s lead single, “Narini,” held the No. 1 position on the Top 10 Zimbabwean Music Videos on DSTV’s Zambezi Magic TV. The group’s upcoming album “Obabes Bembube” asserts Nobuntu’s position as a musical force in Imbube (a cappella), a genre that was traditionally a male domain, and represents a bold shift from the previous bodies of work with a fusion of Afro jazz, gospel and traditional folk tracks.

The Struts - Primadonna Like Me

British glam-rockers The Struts have shared the new video for “Primadonna Like Me.” The video follows the announcement of their highly anticipated new album, YOUNG&DANGEROUS, out October 26th on Interscope Records.

A raucous barrage of exuberant excess, the video sees the band take a wild trip around the glistening casino of Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace Hotel. Surrounded by screaming fans and dripping with foot-stomping, disco-inflected, glitter-drenched swagger, the video also features footage from their recent sold out San Diego headline show. “Primadonna Like Me” was directed by Greg Watermann who was behind the lens for two other videos by The Struts – “Kiss Me” and “Body Talks.”

“Not long ago we flew from the UK straight to Las Vegas and shot a music video in the early hours of the morning,” says frontman Luke Spiller. “Rolling around the casinos and a huge penthouse, we had a lot of fun with ‘Primadonna Like Me.’ Not quite sure how we managed to pull this off, but here it is for your own viewing pleasure. Enjoy and don’t forget to be a Primadonna, baby!

New Report: 2018 Rainbow Wave by the Numbers

An unprecedented number of LGBTQ people have run for office throughout the 2018 election cycle – unleashing the potential for a Rainbow Wave of new openly LGBTQ elected officials at every level of government come November. The increase in candidates running is particularly noticeable for Congressional and gubernatorial positions, when analyzing candidates over the last five election cycles. The number of LGBTQ women-identified nominees for Congress also rose dramatically.
These high-level candidates are among the more than 430 openly LGBTQ people who ran for office at every level of government this cycle. At least 244 openly LGBTQ candidates are still in the race and will appear on general election ballots in November. Of the 25 openly LGBTQ major party nominees for U.S. Congress and governor, all are Democrats.
In a new report from Victory Fund, we find out the:
  • Number of major party Congressional nominees over the last five cycles by political affiliation and gender;
  • Number of gubernatorial candidates and nominees over the last five cycles; and a
  • Statement on the Rainbow Wave from Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of Victory Fund.
By the Numbers: LGBTQ Major Party Nominees for U.S. Congress
Twenty-one openly LGBTQ candidates won Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate or U.S. House this year – more than at any other time in U.S. history. The unprecedented number of nominees marks a 24 percent increase when compared to the 2016 election cycle and a 320 percent increase since 2010. The number of LGBTQ women-identified nominees skyrocketed 160 percent since 2016, the year which held the previous record. There are 13 LGBTQ women-identified Congressional nominees this year – outnumbering the number of men-identified nominees – including both U.S. Senate nominees who are women.
There are zero known LGBTQ Republican party nominees for U.S. Congress this election cycle, the first time since 2010 there are no openly LGBTQ Republican Congressional candidates on the general election ballot.
Currently Senator Tammy Baldwin is the only openly LGBTQ person ever elected to the U.S. Senate and there are six openly LGBTQ members of the U.S. House.

A numerical chart of the number of nominees by cycle and a complete list of 2018 Congressional nominees are in addendum A.

By the Numbers: LGBTQ Gubernatorial Candidates
A record seven known LGBTQ candidates ran for governor during the 2018 election cycle and four received a major party nomination – a historic high. Incredibly, the four nominees represent the full LGBT acronym, with one lesbian (Lupe Valdez of Texas), one gay man (Jared Polis of Colorado), one bisexual woman (Kate Brown of Oregon) and one transgender woman (Christine Hallquist of Vermont) to appear on the ballot in November.
Before this election cycle, no more than three openly LGBTQ people had ever run for governor in one election cycle and never had more than one openly LGBTQ person been nominated for the governor’s office by a major party. All gubernatorial nominees have been Democrats.
Governor Kate Brown is the only openly LGBTQ person ever elected governor in the United States.

7 Years After Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: NCLR and GLAD Joint Statement

Today marks seven years since the U.S. Department of Defense ended Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell—the military policy that prohibited gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers from open service. National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Legal Director Shannon Minter and GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) Transgender Rights Project Director Jennifer Levi, the attorneys who filed the first lawsuit to stop Trump’s transgender military ban and the first to secure a nationwide preliminary injunction halting the ban while the case is heard in court, issued the following joint statement:

“Seven years ago, our country discarded a baseless and discriminatory policy that forced dedicated and courageous servicemembers into the shadows.

“But under President Trump, we see history repeating itself. The same stigma and false stereotypes used to justify Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell are being reprised by the Trump-Pence administration in an attempt to force out 9,000 trained, qualified transgender troops, who are serving honorably at home and overseas.

“To date, every court to hear a case challenging the ban has recognized that these arguments ring hollow and that any servicemember who can meet the standards should be permitted to serve. But the Trump-Pence administration continues to try to push the ban forward.

“Just as we stood with our community during Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, we will continue to stand with transgender servicemembers now until Trump’s unconstitutional, discriminatory transgender military ban is relegated to the dustbin of history.”

Key West Business Guild Celebrates 40 Years of Serving LGBTQ Visitors

The Key West Business Guild, one of the oldest gay business associations in the United States, this year marks its 40th anniversary of serving LGBTQ travelers to Key West — a subtropical island that welcomes approximately 300,000 LGBTQ visitors each year.

Launched in 1978, today the nonprofit association includes more than 500 member businesses. It promotes Key West to national and international travel markets, provides comprehensive information to visitors and addresses the specialized interests of LGBTQ travelers.

The guild now ranks among the nation’s leading gay business associations, with award-winning marketing and global advertising campaigns supported by the Florida Keys tourism council.

“The guild was the first organization of its kind to advertise a gay-friendly tourist destination in the U.S.,” said Peter Arnow, who has served it as community liaison for more than 25 years. “It actively promoted same-sex marriages and works hard to provide an entertaining, alternate social experience.”

Since its inception, the guild has earned a widespread reputation as a resource for LGBTQ travelers to Key West. Staff members assist thousands of walk-ins each year at its 808 Duval St. visitor center, providing a welcoming introduction to the island, insider’s tips and information about local attractions and businesses, answers to their questions and even an LGBTQ-focused map of the area.

The guild also has cultivated thousands of followers on social media and responds to scores of telephone calls, emails and website inquiries each week.

As well as visitor services and promotion, the organization coordinates several annual special events that are designed to appeal to the LGBTQ market. Among them are Key West Pride, Womenfest, Tropical Heat and the Headdress Ball.

While celebrating its 40th birthday year, the guild continues its mission of serving LGBTQ travelers to Key West. Its visitor center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
