Travel: Let Miss Conception Show You Her Mekong

Out Adventures launched a new parody music video titled ‘Anything Goes’ starring Toronto-based drag queen, Miss Conception. The music video -- a comedic take the 1934 musical of the same name -- promotes the company’s upcoming Vietnam & Cambodia: Mekong River Cruise.

“In olden days when gays went cruising it didn't mean boats and boozin’ but now god knows…anything goes!” sings Miss Conception on the deck of the luxurious RV Mekong Pandaw cruise ship.

Miss Conception -- Kevin Levesque when out of drag -- will be on board to host the January 2020 cruise alongside Robert Sharp, the company’s owner. She’ll keep guests entertained with two live singing, dancing and comedy shows, a trivia night and a few unexpected surprises. Guests are encouraged to tip her in Dong, Vietnam’s currency.

“We filmed the entire thing on our 2018 Mekong cruise as we crossed the Vietnam border.” explains Robert. “Everyone in the video was a real customer on the cruise.”

Check Out Team Colorado's Upcoming Events

By Andrew Sturner and the Board of Team Colorado

While this week's snowfall in the Front Range makes the record breaking heat we endured in Paris seem quite distant (can you believe it was actually only 8 weeks ago!), I am still feeling motivated by the countless inspiring performances I witnessed at the Gay Games. It was a privilege to meet many of you as we walked in at the Opening Ceremony together underneath the Colorado flag. Our 39 medals (23 of which are gold, and I don't believe my list is complete) are a testament to your abilities on the track, in the pool, on the court, and more, but far more valuable are the memories you will cherish and new friendships from around the world you will maintain in the months and years ahead.

Please join us at our two upcoming social events: a potluck / overnight weekend trip in the mountains in Conifer on October 20th-21st, and an afternoon at Mile High Hamburger Mary's on Sunday November 11th. Whether you competed in the games and want to show off a medal or you are just interested in learning more about the athletics community in Colorado and want to make new friends, all are welcome.

Good luck to those whose fall athletics seasons are in full swing! Please post about your events on the Facebook group or email them along so that we can support you and your endeavors.

Victory Fund Condemns Homophobic Attack on Cook County Commissioner Candidate Kevin Morrison

On Friday, LGBTQ Victory Fund condemned a homophobic mailer sent by Illinois Republican Party chairman Tim Schneider attacking his openly LGBTQ opponent in the race for Cook County Commissioner. In the mailer sent by Schneider, an altered photo of Victory Fund endorsed candidate Kevin Morrison shows him with a limp wrist and on tiptoes, a clear anti-gay dog whistle attacking the historic LGBTQ candidate. Even worse, the attack ad landed in mailboxes yesterday, which was National Coming Out Day. Morrison would become the first openly LGBTQ person to serve on the Cook County Commission if he beats Schneider in November.

“Let me be clear: Tim Schneider and his team knew exactly what they were doing when they altered a photo of Kevin Morrison to show him with a limp wrist and on his tiptoes,” said Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund. “Schneider is taking a page from the playbook of his pal in the White House – engaging in the divisive and destructive politics that Donald Trump thrives on. For too long, openly LGBTQ candidates were defeated by opponents who appealed to homophobia in a desperate effort to win votes, but I am confident this attack ad will backfire on Schneider. He has misread and misjudged his constituents, which is unsurprising given how rarely he interacts with or listens to them. Cook County voters are demanding leaders who unite their constituents, respect differences, and put forward positive solutions for the region. Kevin is running to do just that, and we are thrilled he is on his way to becoming the first openly LGBTQ person to serve on the commission.”

Below is a photo of the attack mailer sent by Schneider.

LGBTQ Discrimination on College Campuses: Why Title IX Matters

This week is Coming Out Week, and across the country this is a time of visibility, acceptance, and celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Coming Out Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the discrimination, harassment and violence too many LGBTQ students face in their communities and on college campuses.
Unfortunately, laws protecting LGBTQ students from discrimination are under attack. According to a new brief released today by MAP and the National Center for Transgender Equality, Title IX, Religious Exemptions and Campus Climate: LGBT Protections in Higher Education, the expansion of the ability of colleges and universities to claim a religious exemption from federal nondiscrimination laws can have a profoundly negative impact on LGBTQ students. These risks for LGBTQ students include threats of expulsion and increased disciplinary action simply for being LGBTQ, being denied participation in extracurricular activities, or forced into conversion therapy or counseling.
Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally-funded educational institutions, including colleges and universities. For years, Title IX protections have been a critical protection for LGBTQ students—and not just for K-12 students.
In 2014, the Obama administration issued official guidance clarifying that transgender students are protected from discrimination based on Title IX’s prohibition on sex discrimination. However, in 2017, the Trump administration rescinded that guidance. And, in February of this year, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights announced that they will no longer be investigating complaints of discrimination filed by transgender students. Yet, federal Title IX continues to prohibit discrimination based on sex, and many courts have held explicitly that it includes discrimination based on gender identity and/or sexual orientation.
While much of the public discussion about Title IX has centered around transgender students in K-12 institutions, Title IX is crucial for the millions of students attending institutions of higher education.
Many higher education campuses provide a welcoming and supportive campus climate for LGBTQ students, including establishing nondiscrimination policies that enumerate sexual orientation and gender identity; providing facilities access and equal housing for LGBTQ students; establishing preferred name policies; and supporting and prioritizing the needs of LGBTQ student-led organizations, including those measured by The Campus Pride Index. However, there are an increasing number of campuses that are seeking religious exemptions from following even the basic nondiscrimination requirements of Title IX. Because of the reduced oversight from the federal government as signaled by actions by the Trump administration, it is likely more universities will request religious exemptions with regard to LGBTQ students, allowing them to discriminate against students on their campuses.
Just like in K-12 schools, universities have a responsibility to ensure a safe campus environment for all students. It is crucial to foster inclusion and tolerance on campus so that LGBTQ students have the same chance as other students to pursue an education and be prepared to support themselves.

2018 Rainbow Wave of LGBTQ Candidates Tops 600 - More Than Previous Estimates

Yesterday, LGBTQ Victory Fund announced that the record-breaking number of openly LGBTQ candidates running for office this election cycle is significantly larger than previous estimates. At least 606 openly LGBTQ candidates ran for office in 2018 and at least 390 will appear on the ballot in November. Previously the number of openly LGBTQ candidates was estimated at 430, with 244 appearing on the November ballot. The new data – gathered through weeks of analyzing media reports, outreach to local organizations and officials, and other means – shows the historic Rainbow Wave of LGBTQ candidates far surpasses numbers in any previous election cycle.

“An unprecedented Rainbow Wave of openly LGBTQ candidates is running for office this year – shattering previous records and breaking down long-held political barriers for our community,” said Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund. “While the numbers themselves are impressive, we are also running for higher-level offices in larger numbers and in places across the country unthinkable just a few years ago. Whether electing the first openly trans governor in the United States or tripling the number of LGBTQ women in the U.S. Congress, we have an opportunity to turn this Rainbow Wave of LGBTQ candidates into a Rainbow Wave of LGBTQ elected officials on Election Day.”

Of the 606 openly LGBTQ candidates who ran in 2018:
• 91 ran for U.S. Senate or U.S. Congress;
• 10 ran for governor and 299 ran for statewide offices or state legislative seats; and
• 206 ran for city councils, school boards, judicial positions, and other local government offices.

Of the 390 openly LGBTQ candidates who will appear on ballots in November:
• 30 are running for U.S. Senate or U.S. Congress;
• 4 are running for governor and 213 are running for statewide offices or state legislative seats; and
• 143 are running for city councils, school boards, judicial positions, and other local government offices.

Victory Fund endorsed 272 openly LGBTQ candidates in 2018 – the most in its 27-year history – and 229 of those endorsees will be on the ballot in November. Sixteen openly LGBTQ candidates have already been elected this year.
