OUT on VOD: Ka Bodyscapes

Ka Bodyscapes (2016) official Trailer from Jayan on Vimeo.

Ariztical Entertainment has announced the November 2nd VOD release of the gay Indian feature film Ka Bodyscapes. This second feature by filmmaker Jayan Cherian was originally banned from screening in India by the Central Board of Film Certification due to "glorifying gay relationships", among other politically and religiously controversial subject matter including women's rights. After a year and half of court battles, the film finally received an adult certification earlier this year, and recently screened in India coincidentally on the backdrop of the historic Indian Supreme Court ruling of the decriminalization of same-sex relations. Filmmaker Cherian commented on the historic ruling stating that it is "the beginning of a new revolution in our social system."
In the city of Calicut in the Indian state of Kerala, the film follows three young people grappling with entrenched structures of patriarchy - the free-spirited painter Haris, his love interest and friend, the athletic, mild-mannered Vishnu, and a fiery young woman, Sia. The film cuts out a slice of the contemporary Indian region, recreating the struggles of the young to gain space in the face of Hindu right-wing aggression and class oppression in their community.

UPSAHL - The Other Team

Today, buzzing 19-year-old songstress UPSAHL shares her brand new single “The Other Team,” whilst announcing her signing to recently re-launched Arista Records, which historically launched some of the world’s most celebrated and revered superstars. This marks her first major label release under the newly minted deal.

Over the rich sonic backdrop on “The Other Team”, UPSAHL croons a story about “a boy who seems too good to be true” before the clever and catchy chorus chant—“Swinging, swinging, swinging for the other team.” The song explores feelings of unrequited love and missed connections translated into vivid verses and a relatable chorus.

“I wrote ‘The Other Team’ on the last day of a month-long writing trip,” says UPSAHL. “A few minutes into the session, the concept just sort of came to me, ‘Everyone can relate to being into someone that they know they can’t have’.”

One Colorado Releases 2019 Health Insurance Buyer's Guides

Open enrollment for health insurance has begun! From now until January 15th, 2019, you can shop for health insurance on the state marketplace, Connect for Health Colorado. While much progress has been made in securing protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans when accessing health care, it can still be difficult to find comprehensive coverage for people who identify as transgender or have chronic conditions like HIV.

That’s why One Colorado is releasing three new and improved health insurance guides, so that transgender Coloradans and people living with HIV can make informed decisions about which insurance companies provide them with coverage that meets their needs:

• 2019 Transgender Health Insurance Buyer’s Guide
• 2019 Hormone Therapy Prescription Coverage Guide
• 2019 PrEP and HIV Prescription Coverage Guide

These guides not only look at whether the seven plans on the marketplace cover behavioral health services, hormone therapy, and gender-affirming surgery, but also review the availability of an LGBTQ health navigator, coverage of puberty blockers for minors, quality of hormone therapy coverage, and HIV prescription coverage.

Want to find the plan that’s best for you? Check out the 2019 Transgender Health Insurance Buyer’s Guide, the Hormone Therapy Prescription Coverage Guide, and the PrEP and HIV Prescription Coverage Guide.

Don't wait to get covered! You have until December 15, 2018 to get health care that starts on January 1, 2019. Shop online now or call 855-PLANS-4-YOU.

Drag Race Superstars Return to Claim the Title of 'Drag Race Xmas Queen'

VH1 today announced that “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will air a holiday-themed episode on Friday, December 7. The one-hour “RuPaul’s Drag Race Holi-slay Spectacular” will bring back franchise favorites including Eureka O’Hara, Jasmine Masters, Kim Chi, Latrice Royale, Mayhem Miller, Shangela, Sonique, and Trixie Mattel as they compete for the title of America’s first “Drag Race Xmas Queen.”

The eight queens will return for an extraordinary holiday-themed episode filled with jaw-dropping surprises, eye-popping fashions, and epic performances choreographed by Todrick Hall. The queens will be dancing and lip-syncing to original holiday music from two RuPaul holiday albums, the classic “Slay Belles” and the new album, “Christmas Party.” Michelle Visage, Ross Mathews, and Todrick Hall will join RuPaul on the judging panel to help crown America’s first “Drag Race Christmas Queen.”

"Nothing says Christmas like ‘Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and drag queens slipping on their pantyhose,'" said three-time Emmy Award-winning host and EP RuPaul. "Celebrating the holidays with my most festive girls inspired me to record my new album, ‘Christmas Party.’ And this VH1 holiday extravaganza is my way of saying thank you to my ‘Drag Race’ family by spreading a little bit of love, laughter and light across the country and around the world.”

The special comes on the heels of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” making Emmy history as the first series to win both Outstanding Host of a Reality Competition Program and Outstanding Reality Competition Program in the same year. Additionally, the milestone tenth season was the most watched season in franchise history across both “Drag Race” and “All Stars,” averaging 794,000 P18-49 Live+7 viewers and 1.2 million Live+7 total viewers. Both season 11 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and season 4 of “All Stars” were previously greenlit by VH1.

Legal Patchwork Leaves LGBT Workers at Risk

For many people, it’s shocking to learn that nearly half of LGBT adults live in states lacking laws explicitly prohibiting discrimination at work based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Further, most people believe that there is a federal law explicitly prohibiting anti-LGBT discrimination in the workplace.

A new report from MAP, the ACLU and Lambda Legal provides an overview of the current state of employment nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people. Are LGBT Workers Protected from Discrimination? Unravelling the Patchwork of Federal, State, and Local Employment Protections examines the existing federal, state and local laws and court rulings that offer employment protections to LGBT workers. This brief also examines the legal gaps that leave workers vulnerable to discrimination because laws don’t explicitly include the terms “sexual orientation” or “gender identity,” and courts have not interpreted sex discrimination provisions correctly.

Unfortunately, the reality is that far too many LGBT employees are at risk of discrimination, harassment and even unlawful termination. Last week, the ACLU filed a response before the U.S. Supreme Court in a case in which Aimee Stephens, a transgender woman, was fired when she came out to her employer and informed them that she planned to start dressing in appropriate business attire for a woman.

Despite a lack of an explicit federal law prohibiting employment discrimination, Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin, and religion, and provides the foundation for equal employment opportunity in the United States. Therefore, a growing number of federal courts and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) have concluded that when a person is discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, such discrimination is inherently differential treatment based on the individual’s sex.

However, only 20 states and the District of Columbia have state statutes that explicitly prohibit discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation and gender identity, while two states have statutes that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation but not gender identity, and hundreds of cities and counties have passed local nondiscrimination ordinances to protect LGBT workers from discrimination.

Public support is on the side of passing comprehensive and inclusive nondiscrimination employment protections. In 2018, 71% of Americans said they support laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination, including majority support in every state across the country. However, despite this support, federal law, state laws, and the majority of local ordinances do not explicitly prohibit discrimination against LGBT people.

It’s time to update our nondiscrimination laws, so that everyone can have a fair shot to earn a living and provide for their family.
