OUT on DVD/VOD: Cherry Grove Stories

Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American rights to the historically potent LGBTQ documentary CHERRY GROVE STORIES, which entertainingly recounts time in Cherry Grove including queer origins, Tennessee Williams visits, decadent parties, sexual liberation, HIV alienation and the continual swinging of indecent law enforcement…all told through first person accounts and a treasure trove of fabulous, unseen archival footage of the beloved haven.

Breaking Glass acquired rights to the film in March in a deal negotiated between Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff and writer/director Michael Fisher, CEO of MYKNYC. The film will arrive on DVD & VOD on June 4 just in time for Pride Month.

CHERRY GROVE STORIES held its world premiere at BFI Flare, and went on to screen at a number of film festivals including the prestigious NewFest Film Festival where it was considered one of “11 films you absolute ly can’t miss” (NewNowNext), and the OUTshine Film Festival.

“Fisher’s love and respect for his subject shines thru in this heartfelt story of a small, but certainly legendary, section of Fire Island”, said Richard Ross, Co-President of Breaking Glass. “As with all fine Documentaries, the mystique and allure of the Island have been effectively captured in this engaging look at a defining moment in time that is gone forever.”

In an era when it was illegal for two men to hold hands in public, the pristine beachfront hamlet of Cherry Grove on Fire Island, N.Y., was a safe haven for gays who were often targeted for arrest and prosecution. Through interviews with residents and new and archival footage, Michael Fisher’s oral history of the enclave uncovers long-hidden secrets and exposes little-known stories that are more relevant than ever today.

Fisher, who has been going to Cherry Grove for 32 years, was inspired to make the film by long-time resident Michael Delisio. “Michael was one of the first men to go to Cherry Grove in the 1950s,” Fisher says. “He is a great storyteller, and his tales of the early days of Cherry Grove inspired me to capture the many anecdotes about the community before all the old timers are gone.”

In Cherry Grove Stories, residents recount the history of the hamlet, starting in the 1940s when gay men first began congregating in a place that offered a rare refuge from the pervasive homophobia of the time. They tell many funny, even outrageous tales: the first drag parties, when attendees had to hide their dresses and heels under the floorboards of their hosts’ house for fear of being arrested for wearing women’s clothes; escapades in the infamous Meat Rack, and how some escaped police raids by hiding in the bay; and the first drag flotilla on the Fourth of July in 1976, when drag queens “invaded” the nearby Pines.

Fisher believes the current anti-LGBT climate makes Cherry Grove Stories more important than ever. “Men were still being arrested in the Meat Rack in the 1970s, which is not that long ago, and there has been heightened harassment there today,” he points out.

March is Bisexual Health Awareness Month

Happy Bisexual Health Awareness Month!

Did you know?

More women identify as bisexual than men, and people of color are more likely than white people to identify as bisexual.

Bisexual people comprise more than half (52%) of the lesbian, gay, and bisexual population.

Bisexual people live in every state and are ethnically and racially diverse.

Bisexual older adults are less likely to be out.

Did you also know?

Violence, poverty, discrimination, and poor physical and mental health outcomes within the bisexual population are often at higher rates than their lesbian and gay peers.

All too often, bisexual people are swept into the greater LGB community, their specific disparities made invisible within data about the whole community.

Kristin Chenoweth and Adam Rippon to be Honored by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus at the 41st Season Crescendo Gala

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) today announced the honorees for their annual Crescendo Gala being held on April 27 at the Fairmont San Francisco. Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth will be honored with the Vanguard Award and Olympic medalist in figure skating Adam Rippon with the Trailblazer Award. Zendesk will receive this year’s Corporate Champion Award for their commitment to LGBTQ global equality.

Chenoweth has spent her offstage career as pioneer for human rights as a vocal supporter of LGBTQ equality while giving back to the community in countless ways. Bringing greater visibility to LGBTQ athletes, Rippon uses his platform to speak out in support of LGBTQ rights and the freedom to be oneself.

“God gave me a voice powerful enough to show the world how important it is to love each other,” said Kristin Chenoweth. “Music unifies us, art brings us together, and that’s a fact. I have fought for this community, and this Vanguard Award will only strengthen me for battle as I continue to fight because I’m not stopping anytime soon. No matter your gender, no matter who you love, no matter what color of the rainbow you are, love is love is love is love.”

"I have always felt an obligation to use my voice to support those that are not heard” said Adam Rippon. "To be recognized for my advocacy work is truly an honor, especially by such a prestigious group as SFGMC who have been using their voices to champion so many causes for years. Plus, I get to share a stage with Kristin so it’s a win/win all around.”

Funds raised at this year’s gala will support two youth-oriented programs, RHYTHM: Reaching Youth Through Music and It Gets Better. SFGMC launched the youth education program RHYTHM last year to bring a message of anti-bullying and acceptance through music, personal stories and experiences. In 2019 SFGMC will work in collaboration with the It Gets Better Project and Speak Theater Arts to launch a It Gets Better Tour, whose core mission to reduce suicide amongst LGBTQ youth. Through the power of music, both programs encourage LGBTQ youth to live authentically and celebrate their uniqueness.

“We are privileged to recognize this year’s honorees for their commitment to uplifting and empowering the LGBTQ community, especially queer youth. Each one is an inspiration in their own right, using their platforms to speak truth to power while spreading a message of love, positivity and community,” said Chris Verdugo, Executive Director.

One Colorado: ACTION ALERT! Contact your Senators to support HB19-1129: Banning Conversion Therapy

By Sheena Kadi, Deputy Director, One Colorado
For the first time in five years, we are headed to the full Colorado Senate for a vote! Moments ago, HB19-1129: Banning Conversion Therapy, passed out of the Colorado Senate State, Veterans, & Military Affairs committee.  Now, we need your help to get this legislation across the finish line.
This is a really big deal, as previous versions of this bill had been sent to the kill committee with no expectation to ever make it this far. As quickly as tomorrow, the full Senate will have the first opportunity to vote on protecting our LGBTQ youth and ban this dangerous and discredited practice once and for all.
Opponents to ban conversion therapy are mobilizing. With this being the first time the Colorado Senate gets to vote on this, it is critical that we contact our elected officials and let them know that as their constituents, we support this legislation.

NIKO - The One

Following first single “THE ONE”, and the rendition of Josè Feliciano’s “Light My Fire”, out artist NIKO releases his first EP, RMNC 21. On the record, he fuses contemporary pop melodies with dance beats and Euro influences. The result is a sensual soundscape about love, sex, and complicated emotional bonds.

NIKO says, "The fil rouge of RMNC 21 is romance, and the implications of love and lust. All songs explore different aspects of relationships in the 21st century: from mutual attraction to online dating, seduction, and cheating, I tried to paint a picture based on my own experiences and fantasies".

17 cities. 1 state. The One Colorado For All Statewide Tour.

By Daniel Ramos, Executive Director, One Colorado
We're coming to a town near you! We've accomplished so much together, especially over the last year. A lot of folks have been asking:
"We've elected our country's first gay governor, our state's first transgender lawmaker, and have a pro-equality majority in the state legislature. What's next?"
"We're going to pass the conversion therapy ban this year, so what's next?"
"We have third gender options on birth certificates and driver's licenses. What do we work on next?"
We hear you.  WHAT'S NEXT? Sign up to learn more.
As the state's largest advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans and their families, we've worked hard for the legal and political advancements we've achieved. And there's still so much work to do. As many of us know, legal equality and representation in elected offices does not eliminate the lived equality gap that affects many of us in our day-to-day lives.
More than ever before, most of LGBTQ Coloradans – 95% – have health insurance, yet one in five people have been denied care by a provider for being LGBTQ.

LGBTQ Coloradans are more than three times as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression than the general public. LGBT youth are twice as likely to attempt suicide than their non-LGBT peers.

LGBT youth are approximately twice as likely to be experience online bullying than their non-LGBT peers, despite having comprehensive protections in Colorado for students based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.
We are excited to announce our 2019 One Colorado For All Statewide Tour with seventeen stops all across the state, taking us from Grand Junction to Fort Collins, from Steamboat to Alamosa, from Pueblo to Aspen.
We'll bring you up-to-date on the equality landscape in Colorado, the latest victories in the advancement of LGBTQ rights and protections, and chat about what's next in ensuring a more fair and just Colorado for all.  We'll also be looking for you to tell us about the work that has been happening in your local communities, and discuss local opportunities to bridge the gaps between legal and lived equality.
Mark your calendars now. Sign up for the 2019 One Colorado For All Statewide Tour Stop nearest you, and we'll be in touch with locations and times as we get closer to the tour date.
Thank you for all of your support over the last nine years.  We've accomplished so much together. Now, the work continues.

Key National LGBTQ Military Organizations Respond to Administration’s Implementation of Ban on Open Trans Military Service

This week, the Administration took steps to implement its ban on open transgender military service. Implementation processes noted in the directive will officially go into effect in thirty days, just under three years after the current policy, allowing open transgender military service, was implemented. All four service chiefs and 41 retired Generals and Admirals have emphatically denounced the claims this Administration is using to justify the ban.

OutServe-SLDN, SPARTA, and the American Military Partner Association (AMPA), the nation’s three key advocacy and support organizations for our LGBTQ military, veteran, and military family communities, issued the following responses:

“By taking steps to implement its ban on open and authentic military service, the Trump-Pence Administration has definitively affirmed that when it comes to our national security, they hold unsubstantiated and discriminatory claims as more important than effectively and efficiently completing the mission,” said OutServe-SLDN Executive Director Andy Blevins. “Our transgender siblings-in-arms and future warriors have proven time and again that they are committed, that they are ready, and that they are able to selflessly and effectively serve our nation. We will continue to fight until open and authentic military service is the law of the land – our service members deserve it and our country needs it.”

"We stand firmly with our members and the thousands of transgender troops serving bravely across the globe,” said SPARTA President Blake Dremann. “While the new policy may go into effect soon, it does not remove or lessen the contributions we continue to provide in the defense of our Nation. We look forward to a time when service members are judged solely on their capability to complete the mission. We will continue to work to make that a reality."

"This is the start of an incredibly dark chapter in our nation’s history as the Trump-Pence Administration moves to implement an unconscionable ban on our brave transgender service members and qualified recruits who want to serve,” said American Military Partner Association (AMPA) President Ashley Broadway-Mack. “This horrific policy is even more cruel than ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ because the Pentagon explicitly told these service members it was finally safe to come out — and now they are being targeted for discrimination. We emphatically condemn this unconscionable transgender military ban because it undermines military readiness, destroys unit cohesion, betrays our service members and is based on nothing more than blatant bigotry."
