Books: ORIANA FALLACI

One of the most infamous journalists and authors of the twentieth century, Oriana Fallaci covered Hollywood, politics, and feminism. She interviewed the top international political figures of her generation, including Khomeini, Gaddafi, Indira Gandhi, and Kissinger, while writing bestselling novels, reporting from the front lines of several wars, and balancing love affairs and heartbreak.

More than a decade after her death, Other Press has published a groundbreaking biography ORIANA FALLACI: The Journalist, the Agitator, the Legend about her star-studded, yet ironically lonely life, out soon in paperback. With unprecedented access to personal records, in-depth research of archival documents, and unpublished testimonies of family, friends, and colleagues, author Cristina de Stefano shines a light on the remarkable story of the Italian journalist. Beginning with Fallaci’s childhood, enlisting in the Italian Resistance in Florence, de Stefano pieces together the life of an iconoclastic figure whose meteoric rise to fame was then followed, surprisingly, by near total obscurity at the time of her death. On each page of this landmark biography, Oriana Fallaci dazzles as an inspiring and controversial woman who defied the codes of reportage, and established the “La Fallaci” style of interview.

Colorado Tourism Office Partners with Inclusive Journeys to Launch The Inclusive Guide, A New Digital Green Book and Releases Innovative Frontline Training Module

The Colorado Tourism Office (CTO) recently announced it has entered into a first-of-its-kind partnership with Inclusive Journeys to launch the Inclusive Guide, an online community that lists safe and welcoming spaces for anyone who faces prejudice. The partnership is announced in conjunction with the release of a new training module as part of the CTO’s Colorado Concierge online training platform titled, “Inclusive Colorado Culture.” The new training module is publicly available to guide frontline hospitality workers statewide, and contains practical tips for advancing an inclusive culture and creating more welcoming experiences for diverse guests. Both initiatives follow the recommendations released earlier this year from a 30-member CTO Inclusivity in Travel Advisory Group, which the CTO convened to help create a cohesive strategy to increase Colorado’s appeal to diverse travelers and advance a more inclusive culture within Colorado tourism.

“We’re excited to see the meaningful groundwork laid by the CTO’s Inclusivity in Travel Advisory Group being put into action through this new partnership and training module,” said Patrick Meyers, executive director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. “This module will help guide Colorado’s frontline hospitality workers in positioning Colorado as a welcoming state to all visitors by offering an array of diverse experiences.”

Based in Denver, Colo., Inclusive Journeys was founded by two Black women with a mission to create data-driven, economic incentives for businesses to be more inclusive and welcoming, resulting in safer spaces for people who regularly experience discrimination. The Beta version of the Inclusive Guide, a website like Yelp for inclusivity, launched in the Denver community on Juneteenth with a plan to launch in other cities across the country in the future. Users of the Inclusive Guide can submit business locations they feel safe in and then rate the business on a range of attributes such as courtesy of staff, ADA compliance, sense of personal safety as it relates to their identity, gender neutral bathrooms and more. Crowd-sourced entries will populate “inclusivity reviews'' for businesses and recreation spaces.

“It is exciting to truly be at the forefront of breaking down barriers in providing meaningful guidance to businesses in becoming more aware and inclusive through this innovative partnership with Inclusive Journeys”, said Wanda James, co-chair of the CTO Inclusivity in Travel Advisory Group. “The Inclusive Guide will help build relationships between local Coloradans, businesses and tourists as we work together to create a solid, loyal, and more diversified customer base.”

In partnering with Inclusive Journeys on the launch of the Inclusive Guide, businesses on Colorado.com, the CTO’s best-in-class website, will have the opportunity to earn badges that signify they are safe and welcoming to travelers, elevating awareness of the state as an open and welcoming destination that offers inspired travel experiences for all. The Inclusive Guide will also provide resources to help Colorado businesses self-audit for inclusiveness, tools to help businesses improve their inclusivity rating and referrals to Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity trainers.

“As time has gone on, ‘minority’ or ‘underrepresented’ groups have grown exponentially in size and spending power,” said Inclusive Journeys co-founders Crystal Egli and Parker McMullen Bushman. “The Inclusive Guide will be a resource for people to spend their money safely and ethically, putting money back into Colorado businesses that welcome and celebrate customers of all identities. We are so grateful to be able to partner with our home state to make our vision a reality and hope the partnership with the CTO is a model we can take to other states as we expand this important network.”

In addition to the Inclusive Journeys partnership, the CTO today also released a new training module as part of its Colorado Concierge online training platform titled, “Inclusive Colorado Culture.” The new training module is publicly available to guide frontline hospitality workers statewide, and contains practical tips for advancing an inclusive culture and creating more welcoming experiences for diverse guests. The training also introduces general Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) language and concepts, applied to Colorado tourism scenarios.

This new chapter can be accessed for free at any time on the CTO’s online training platform, BeAColoradoConcierge.com. In addition to the Inclusive Colorado Culture chapter, people can access six other chapters for free to gain knowledge on topics like traveler safety, Colorado essentials, and how to travel responsibly.

To create this new Inclusive Colorado Culture training module, the CTO engaged Annie Kao, founder of Denver-based Ascent Inclusion Consulting, to produce practical training with input from a sub-committee of stakeholders from the CTO’s Inclusivity in Travel Advisory Group.

More information about Colorado’s Inclusivity in Travel Advisory Group can be found on the Inclusivity in Travel webpage, with a full list of its members including state and county government representatives and a range of tourism business sectors including lodging, restaurants, outdoor recreation, arts and culture, casino, cannabis, the liquid arts and academia. The site also includes the Advisory Group’s charter for action, final report and recommendations which were endorsed by the Colorado Tourism Board in March 2021 and recordings of its sessions.

Luke Willis' POOL BOY to Screen at Outfest Los Angeles

Filmmaker Luke Willis has announced the West Coast Premiere of his latest short film,
Pool Boy, at the 2021 edition of Outfest Los Angeles. The tender love story follows a conflicted young man who must reconcile his growing feelings for someone he never expected against the face he shows the world.  Pool Boy will make its West Coast Premiere at Outfest Los Angeles on August 14th as part of the Boy Shorts program.

Filmmaker, model and intersex activist River Gallo (Ponyboi) stars in the titular role, opposite Tim Torre (Revan). Ahead of the screening, Willis shared his vision for the film: "I wanted to make this film to offer a reality where people are not afraid to openly love whomever they love without guilt or shame - a world where a traditionally fetishized community is seen as worthy of authentic affection, worthy of being loved and pursued openly and fearlessly. This film takes a privileged-cis-white-“straight” identifying male and explores his choice in the world to either accept or reject the heteronormative expectations society has for him. The trans community is perfect as they are, and this film is a love letter to all gender non-conforming people to say you are valuable and lovable just as you are."

New York's Crush Club Release "Borderline"

New York alt dance pop duo Crush Club releases their club-ready track “Borderline” via New York’s legendary Nervous Records HERE. Frontman and vocalist TC Milan and producer, multi-instrumentalist Le Chev deliver the summer club and festival-ready hit.

Crush Club says: “Borderline” is inspired by tracks that got us into dance music in the first place. We wanted to give you something fresh that also feels classic. The song is about searching for human connection in spaces that could seem off limits or hard to find. We’re absolutely stoked to be releasing this with Nervous Records, a label we’ve admired for as long as we’ve been making music.”

Nervous Records’ Andrew Salsano: “I've been a fan of Crush Club since I first heard their 2018 track "We Dance". As I was first listening to Borderline, I was hooked in right away with the Piano line, and could not help but think of Summer. The bright and uplifting track paired with the falsetto styled vocals made this a one-listen sign for me, hope you enjoy it as much as we do!”

Last year saw Crush Club releasing “My Man” (with Nicki B The Vagabond), “Angel”(with producer/DJ LP Giobbi), and “Domino” after a string of wild dance tracks such as “We Dance” (Supermini Remix), which BBC1 Radio’s Annie Mac instantly titled a “Hottest Record in The World”. A classic in the same celebratory vein as Indeep’s “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life,” “We Dance” pays homage to the life-affirming qualities of the dance floor: We dance, we make the club our home / We chant all night to free our souls / We dance!

Sarah Barrios - Thank God You Introduced Me To Your Sister

Sarah Barrios has released her latest single, “Thank God You Introduced Me To Your Sister."

“This song is one big messy, book-inspired, bisexual daydream and I can’t wait for the world to fall into it with me. In my head, I’m way more confident and cool than I am in real life. I have crazy adventures, wild situations and get lost in way too many love tropes. After coming out earlier this year, I was really nervous about how I would talk to women, so I spent a lot of time daydreaming up crazy stories and this song was one of them," says Barrios.

2021 has been a big year for Sarah as she is now set to perform at Lollapalooza and The Governors' Ball, as well as having been featured on major publications such as J-14, Teen Vogue, Ones to Watch, Sweety High, and many more.

Firehouse Theater and Wheat Ridge Theatre team up for Three Viewings

Firehouse Theater Company and Wheat Ridge Theatre Company are proud to present Three Viewings by Jeffrey Hatcher. Performances will be August 13 through September 4.

Three Viewings is composed of three comic/dramatic monologues set in a midwestern funeral parlor over a three-day weekend. It gives three different perspectives about viewing death through the eyes of three different characters - each of them offering a unique story causing the audience to have an in-depth understanding of their views, giving us a glimpse of their life.

TELL-TALE
is the story of Emil, the mild-mannered undertaker whose unspoken passion for a local real-estate woman who comes to all his funerals leads him to commit crimes and plot a way to confess his true feelings before time—and bodies—run out.

THE THIEF OF TEARS is Mac, a beautiful Los Angeles drifter, who makes her living stealing jewelry from corpses. When her wealthy grandmother dies, leaving her nothing, Mac returns to her hometown and attempts to pry loose her inheritance, a diamond ring her grandmother promised Mac when she was a child.

THIRTEEN THINGS ABOUT ED CARPOLOTTI is the story of Virginia, the widow of a wheeler-dealer contractor, who discovers that her husband has left her in debt to the banks, her family and the mob.

Why Three Viewings? Death has always been around. I see loved ones cross to the other side and I feel their void in my life,” offers Director Maru Garcia. “This play allows me to explore three different perspectives in which each one of the characters contributes to a different understanding of my personal experiences and my own relationship with death. Directing this play, which contains unique situations, makes me realize how many different perspectives there are regarding death and how each one of us has a direct effect in each other’s lives. It has been an adventure and a pleasure to direct this play.”

Tickets are $23 for tickets purchased before August 13. All remaining tickets will then be $25. All performances will be at the John Hand Theater, located at 7653 E. 1st Place, Denver CO 80230. Tickets are available online at www.firehousetheatercompany.com or by calling the Box Office at (303) 562-3232. Masks will be required for audience members.
