Mudpuppy Presents 'Baby’s First Book of Banned Books'

Mudpuppy, the innovative children’s book publisher, is set to release an exciting new book that will introduce young readers to some of the most beloved, and now banned, children’s books. The Baby’s First Book of Banned Books will provide an opportunity for children in the 0-5 years reading age group to explore the core themes and lessons found in titles such as The Diary of Anne Frank, The Giving Tree, and The Kite Runner, among others.

As censorship and the suppression of diverse voices continue to become more prevalent in schools, Baby’s First Book of Banned Books offers a valuable tool for parents and caregivers to engage their children in important conversations about freedom of expression and intellect. By nurturing a new generation of young rebels yet untouched by the suffocating weight of hypocrisy and censorship in the classroom, the book inspires a commitment to diversity, social justice, and non-conformity.

The book provides an excellent opportunity for parents and caregivers to start difficult conversations with their children about censorship, the importance of diverse perspectives, and the need to protect free speech. With book bans reaching a fever pitch lately, there’s never been a better time to impart to kids the moral and ethical lessons these books convey.

As parents and caregivers, it is our responsibility to ensure that young readers are exposed to a wide range of ideas and perspectives. Baby’s First Book of Banned Books helps achieve this goal by introducing kids to controversial topics at such a young age. It is also essential to balance our desire to protect our kids from harmful content with the need to expose them to diverse viewpoints and perspectives. The book’s focus on celebrating nonconformity, diversity, and social justice helps develop critical thinking skills in children, making them agents of change.

Mudpuppy has a track record of promoting diversity and inclusivity in their books. Their other titles, such as They, He, She: Words for You and Me Board Book, Love in the Wild board book, and Bye Bye, Binary, encourage children to love what they love while refusing to conform to gender binary stereotypes.

By turning young readers into early rebels, Mudpuppy hopes to contribute to fostering a generation of critical thinkers, problem solvers, and empathetic leaders who will shape the future in positive ways, challenge entrenched power structures, and demand a more just and equitable society.

Ptown Film Festival 25th Anniversary: Bruce LaBruce, Billy Porter, Julio Torres, Megan Stalter, John Waters and More

Celebrating 25 years of “Filmmaking on the Edge,” the Provincetown International Film Festival (PIFF) announced today its lineup of narrative, documentary, and short films, as well as honorees for this year’s Filmmaker on the Edge, Excellence in Acting, and Next Wave Awards. Award-winning filmmaker, photographer, writer Bruce LaBruce will be named 2023’s “Filmmaker on the Edge.” In addition to numerous shorts and three theater works at the Hau Theater in Berlin, LaBruce has written and directed 14 feature films including GERONTOPHILIA, L.A. ZOMBIE and SAINT-NARCISSE. He is currently working on an art/porn experimental film called THE VISITOR for the a/political gallery in London, UK. LaBruce will be in Provincetown to receive the award in conversation with resident artist John Waters.

“If anybody deserves the Filmmaker on Edge Award, it’s this year’s honoree Bruce LaBruce,” said John Waters. “He’s been pushing the limits of gay correctness, punk attitude, and political mayhem for about forty years and has somehow managed to keep his celluloid troublemaking spirit intact both above and below the limits of underground and commercial filmmaking. Filth followers everywhere - we honor you, Bruce LaBruce.”

It was also announced that Billy Porter, the Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated actor, singer, director, writer and producer will be honored with this year’s Excellence in Acting Award. The POSE star, most recently seen on screen in the comedy 80 FOR BRADY alongside Jane Fonda, will next star in and co-write a biopic on James Baldwin. In addition to receiving the award in conversation with film scholar and critic B. Ruby Rich, Porter will be in town to support OUR SON, his latest film also starring Luke Evans. It follows a couple divorcing and navigating custody of their son and will screen in Provincetown on June 16 at Town Hall.

“Billy Porter is a boundary breaking talent,” said Anne Hubbell, PIFF’s Executive Director. “Whether on the screen or on stage, Billy’s performances captivate and stay with you. We’re so thrilled to honor him and share his new film OUR SON with audiences.”

Additionally, writer, director and actor Julio Torres (PROBLEMISTA, LOS ESPOOKYS) and writer, actress, and comedian Megan Stalter (CORA BORA, HACKS) will both be in attendance to receive the festival’s “Next Wave Award'' this year. The honor recognizes those who have exciting and distinctive voices, take artistic risks, and have a passionate commitment to independent film.

Torres’ feature directorial debut, PROBLEMISTA, which he also wrote, produced and starred in, will screen as a Spotlight Selection at the festival. The film follows an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who struggles to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York and is running out of time on his work visa. He takes on the job of assisting an erratic art-world outcast (Tilda Swinton) in hopes to stay in the country. Also produced by Emma Stone, Dave McCary and Ali Herting, PROBLEMISTA will be released by A24 later this year.

Stalter, who appears in the film, will also present PIFF’s opening night film, CORA BORA, in which she stars. Directed by Hannah Pearl Utt and written by Rhianon Jones, CORA BORA follows the story of Cora, a messy millennial and struggling musician. When she goes home to Portland to win her girlfriend back, Cora realizes there’s a lot more than her love life that needs salvaging.

“The fresh, unparalleled artistry of Julio Torres and Megan Stalter embodies the spirit and energy of our Next Wave Award,” said PIFF’s Director of Programming, Andrew Peterson. “We are so thrilled to share their innovative talents and films with the Provincetown Film Festival audience this year.”

THEATER CAMP from directors Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman is set to close the festival. It tells the story about staff members of an upstate New York theater camp who must band together when their beloved founder falls into a coma. In addition to PROBLEMISTA, Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s debut feature MUTT, and Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s new documentary TAYLOR MAC’S 24-DECADE HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC will be Spotlight Selections.

“In celebrating 25 years of PIFF, we are beyond excited to present a fantastic slate of over 100 films that include wildly talented first-time filmmakers, BIPOC and LGBTQIA voices, and our longstanding commitment to gender parity,” said PIFF Artistic Director Lisa Viola. “Opening the festival with the new queer comedy CORA BORA from PIFF alum Hannah Pearl Utt, and featuring a breakout performance from Megan Stalter, we are thrilled to share this milestone with both the filmmakers and our filmgoing community together in Provincetown.”

The Theme for #MamasDay2023 is…

Mia Cooley with her child
By Mia Cooley, Founder of xHood and Forward Together Partner

As a Black queer mama, families like mine have a long history of being called “non-traditional.”

Right now, there are people actively fighting against us queer and trans parents because they do not want us to live affirming lives and raise happy humans. For those of us who are also Black birthing folks, we are faced with the ongoing struggle of safely creating and nurturing our families on our own terms.

I founded xHood because I wanted a community for Black queer people like myself to build and nurture healthy families and parent happy children. Through my work, I am letting other Black birthing folks know that we deserve to take up space, no matter what others say. We deserve the main stage and to make it about us.

This is why I am excited to announce the theme for #MamasDay2023 is Black Mamas Reclaiming Their Space in the Reproductive Justice Movement! It’s about time that Black mamahood and Black mamas are listened to and centered – once and for all.

When the foremothers of the reproductive justice movement created the four tenets – the human right to not have a child, to have a child, to parent our children in a safe and healthy environment, and the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy – they did so because historically Black mamas have not been able to experience these freedoms.

For Mamas Day 2023, Forward Together partnered with talented artists cozcon, Ebin Lee and Tesh Silver to create four new pieces that not only reflect these tenets, but also honor the expansiveness and beauty of Black mamas. They understand that we are queer, trans and non-binary. We are aunties, big sisters, cousins and matriarchs of the community. We are not a monolith and exist in various forms of beauty, strength and resilience.

While I believe uplifting the most marginalized of a population improves the experiences of all, it is so common for Black mamas to get left out of the same conversations that we began. This unfortunate reality is why I stand firm in xHood’s mission to serve Black LGBTQ+ parents. That’s why xHood is partnering with Forward Together to center and celebrate Black queer mamahood and give away this year’s beautiful Mamas Day art at our upcoming Black Parents PRIDE Summit.

Today, we are fighting to create a future where all Black mamas – especially queer, trans, and non-binary mamas – are centered in our movement spaces and given the credit we are owed!

Together, we are rewriting these narrow definitions of mamahood and rejecting the harmful idea that only some people deserve to parent.

Let’s make sure we are loud and clear that until Black mamas are liberated, none of us are.

Outright International Holds 27th Celebration of Courage Awards and Gala

Outright International, a global human rights organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTIQ people across the world, is honored to announce its 27th Celebration of Courage awards and gala to be held at Pier Sixty in New York City on June 5, 2023. I’m honored to have the great opportunity to host this year’s annual gala in New York City to celebrate those fighting for LGBTQ rights for individuals around the world. Together, we will champion in the next era of rule-breakers and changemakers. And I cannot wait to celebrate with allies, honorees, and my peers,” shared Zahara Benet.

Felipa de Souza Award

Their recent work has advanced the decriminalization of colonial-era sodomy laws in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. They have also been working toward greater social protections and facilitation of  LGBTIQ sensitivity training for police and service providers as well as bringing awareness towards gender-based violence against women and gender nonconforming people.

"A pioneer in regional LGBTIQ community building and mobilizing, ECADE is deeply invested in the capacity building and empowerment of LGBTIQ people in the Caribbean who are often denied access based on negative perceptions,” noted ECADE Executive Director, Kenita Placide. “ECADE’s Board of Directors, Secretariat, and staff are moved beyond words to be recognized with this prestigious award.”

Outstanding Award

Google.org has demonstrated an extraordinary philanthropic commitment to Outright and the global movement to advance human rights for LGBTIQ people. "We are honored and grateful to receive this award from Outright. Outright has done so much to advance the rights of LGBTIQ people across the globe and we are proud to support their exemplary work,” said Melonie Parker, Chief Diversity Officer of Google.org.

Outspoken Award

The Star Trek franchise’s core values align closely with Outright’s own: education, care, compassion, diversity, equity, inclusion, advocacy, and authentic LGBTIQ representation and storytelling. Members of the queer cast of Star Trek: Discovery are global LGBTIQ icons – courageous and elevating the visibility, voice, and platform of millions of queer people around the world that battle discrimination and risk to their personal safety, every day.

"Through the show, the LGBTIQ community is being seen and heard in the ways we want to be seen and heard, as our truest selves, as the heroes of our own stories and our own fight for dignity and equality,” shares cast member and actorvist Wilson Cruz.

Florida Parents Will Ask Federal Court to Block Transgender Health Ban Passed by Legislature

Seven Florida parents who are currently challenging state Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine rules banning established medical care for their children and other transgender adolescents will also ask a federal court to block provisions in SB 254, passed by the Florida legislature today, that would codify into state law the current Boards of Medicine bans and create additional barriers for families with transgender adolescents.

The families are represented by Southern Legal Counsel, GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the Human Rights Campaign, which issued the following statement:

“Today the state of Florida has doubled down on denying science, intruding on family privacy and parental decision-making, and trampling on the rights and wellbeing of transgender adolescents. The bill passed by the legislature today interferes even further with families, deliberately provoking conflict by inviting challenges to established custody orders. This exacerbates the state of emergency for parents who are already being forced to watch their kids suffer rather than get them the effective healthcare they need and that will allow them to thrive. We will take swift action to ask the federal court to block the ban on access to essential healthcare in SB 254, as well as the Boards of Medicine bans, to stop further harm to transgender youth and their families while the plaintiffs’ case continues.”

Similar bans on established medical care for transgender youth have been blocked by federal judges in Alabama, Arkansas, and Missouri.

ALL MAN: The International Male Story: A Remarkable Journey of Fashion, Masculinity, and Sexuality in America

Get ready for a journey back in time with ALL MAN: The International Male Story, a documentary that celebrates the legacy of the revolutionary mail-order catalog. This Tribeca Festival and Outfest Official Selection will be released on digital platforms on June 6th, with select theatrical screenings to be announced.

ALL MAN: The International Male Story traces the unlikely story of a group of outsiders who designed one of the most sought-after mail-order catalogs of the 70s and 80s, International Male. This remarkable journey forever changed the way men looked at themselves, each other, and how the world saw them. The documentary features appearances by Matt Bomer, Simon Doonan, Carson Kressley, and more.

The film journeys across three decades of the catalog's unlikely but lasting impact on fashion, masculinity, and sexuality in America. Gene Burkard, a once-closeted Midwesterner and GI, found freedom in San Diego, where he transformed men's fashion into something cosmopolitan, carefree, and trend-setting. International Male reached gay and straight customers alike as it redefined images of masculinity in popular culture, generating revenue and circulation in the millions.

This character-driven documentary beautifully crafts a portrait of a band of outsiders who changed the way men looked at themselves, each other, and the world. ALL MAN: The International Male Story is a modern-day fairy tale about a dream that really did come true.
