The Trump administration is planning to release a new plan to rescind federal guidance to protect transgender students from discrimination. The National Education Association, the nation’s largest labor union, reiterated its pledge to double-down on protecting the civil rights of LGBTQ students and members.
Withdrawing the guidance does not change the law. As most courts have held, Title IX protects transgender students, and only courts, and ultimately the Supreme Court, can change that. Schools have a legal and a moral duty to support all students, including transgender students. In fact, states, school districts, and schools nationwide are supporting and affirming transgender students, and we believe they will continue to do so with or without guidance from the Trump administration.
Said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García, “Every student matters, and every student has the right to feel safe, welcomed, and valued in our public schools. This is our legal, ethical and moral obligation. The Trump administration’s plans to reverse protections for transgender students by rescinding the Title IX guidance, is dangerous, ill-advised, and unnecessary.
“We reject this discriminatory plan because it is a drastic departure from our core values. We don’t teach hate, we do not tell people how to pray, and we do not discriminate against people based on their religion, gender, or identity. Period.
“As the Trump administration threatens our students and our values, we will double-down on our efforts to protect our most vulnerable citizens, including our LGBTQ students and members. We urge more states, school districts, and schools to adopt protections for transgender students. We owe to our students because they need to see us take a bold stand against discrimination whatever form it takes.”

In 2008, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter signed the Anti-Discrimination Act that added protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Coloradans in places of public accommodations, including schools. Since then, it has been unlawful to deny access or services based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity — and last year, the Obama Administration's Justice Department issued similar affirming guidelines for transgender students, which Trump's Justice Department may rescind.
The Auraria campus is in the planning stages for their annual Higher Education Diversity Summit here on the Auraria campus. The event this year will be held on Friday, April 21 in the King Center.
They have altered the format for the Summit this year, and going with more of a TED Talk format that we are calling HEDS Talks.
The planning committee has come up with different content areas, including LGBTQ. We are seeking a short 15-20 minute talk on any subject in the LGBTQ realm, with a focus on intersectional issues.

The Event and Fundraising Coordinator will be responsible for increasing the awareness of the plight of our community cats and the work of Divine Feline and The Feline Fix. This position will be responsible for event planning and coordination, social networking, grant writing and fundraising.
Tomorrow, Dr. Oz is joined by Ricky Martin, who found fame at age 12 as a member of the popular Latin American boy band, “Menudo,” and famously came out as gay in 2010.
On how his kids play a huge part in his everyday life, Ricky Martin explains: “Everything that I do, every decision that I make is based on them—is based on their well-being. That was a commitment that I made when I decided to become a father. And they are a little bit like my religion because, they don’t know it, but they’re like little life-savers. Because once again, when I have to make a decision, whatever that decision is, I think of them and it turns out to be the right decision.”
On his struggle with high cholesterol from a young age, Ricky Martin reveals: “When I was 18-years-old, the doctor told me, “Why is your cholesterol so high?” Tell me if I’m wrong, Doctor—if you’re 18 and you’re cholesterol is high, it’s genetics, right? But obviously, when you’re 18-years-old, you don’t care—you ignore it completely. Sometimes when you’re 45, you’re still ignoring it. But three years ago—excuse me, five years ago—the doctor said, “We need to really focus on this.”
On becoming a vegetarian, Ricky Martin shares: “I’m a Latin man—I love meat, I love seasoning, I love greasy stuff. And I love my typical food from Puerto Rico. It’s fried, I just love it and it tastes really good. So what can we do? I started...I started…I became a vegetarian—slowly, I didn’t do it drastically. First, I started eliminating the red meat, and the chicken, then the fish. And then it was all vegetables. How did I do that? I don’t know. If you told me when I was 20 that I was going to become a vegetarian, I would’ve been like, you’re crazy—that’s never going to happen. But I’ve lived a very healthy vegetarian lifestyle for three and a half, four years.”

The photo here is of a group of immigrants from Ireland in 1909. A few years after this photo was taken my grandfather made the journey to America from County Mayo, Ireland, joining his sister who had come over first. It wasn’t easy. Much of the vile expressed towards immigrants these days was expressed towards them and other Irish when they arrived. And just like today, many immigrants coming into this country in the early 1900s did not have legal documents.
I recently saw a tee shirt being sold by one of my favorite bands, Rise Against, as a fundraiser for one of my favorite non-profits, the ACLU. The front of the tee is the Rise Against logo and on the back a simple statement: No Human is Illegal.
The news is horrifying, especially if you are living in the US without legal documents. This could mean you were brought here as a child by parents or grandparents and only know the US as your home, or you came here twenty years ago on a visa with limited time and decided to stay. Meanwhile, you worked, paid taxes, became part of the economy and community here. Then, preparing for your appointment with immigration, you find out that the appointment is to detain you and begin the process of deporting you. Not your four children who were born here, just you.
Because you are an illegal alien. You are not just illegal, you’re an illegal alien. Except that you’re not from Mars, you’re from Gambia. Or El Salvador.
Some Americans veins pop when discussing people here without legal documents. This is one reason so many voted for the current President. They are vile. They are heathens. They are godless. They do not hold “my” Christian values. They are taking jobs that my son or granddaughter should have. Some do not think of them as neighbors or human beings, nor do they think real numbers like the estimated $12 billion a year they add to Social Security, knowing they will not reap a penny of that. By the way, that number came from the Social Security Administration in 2014.
I would love it if the entire conversation about immigrants here without legal documents was toned down a bit. It’s horrifying watching people, especially people of faith demonize human beings who are living, working, loving and adding to our communities in so many positive ways.As one who believes we all have more in common than not, there has to be common space for all of us.
What I can do today is to let my representatives in the state house and the US Capitol know that I support all immigrants. That deporting someone who has lived here for years makes no sense, and is in fact not how our country treats people. For the few immigrants who have committed crimes, sure, some of them should be deported. Yet time after time others get caught in the web of “criminals”. And for goodness sake, do not demonize human beings in my name.
I know this is a tough topic for many. It’s one that will be around for a long time. Let’s talk about it without demonizing immigrants or each other.
