Lawyers representing the state of Arizona are defending a decision by the state Legislature and Gov. Jan Brewer to cut benefits offered to the same-sex partners of state employees.
A judge blocked the move last July, saying the action was unconstitutional. The cut amounts to less than 1% of state spending on employee benefits.
