Gay Jamaicans seek asylum in U.S.

Almost one-third of the 92 people who won asylum in the U.S. last year because of the potential for anti-LGBT persecution in their home countries were from Jamaica, according to Immigration Equality, which assists such asylum seekers.

The group's legal director said laws criminalizing homosexual behavior make it difficult for Jamaicans to report bias crimes, calling the country, "one of the most violently homophobic countries that exist in the Western Hemisphere."
