Former
Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican, said she meant no disrespect
when she invited supporters of civil unions to witness her surprise veto
of civil unions bill in 2010, but activists called the move “an
inhumane spectacle.”
In a debate last week, Rep. Mazie Hirono, Lingle’s
Democratic opponent in the race to represent Hawaii in the U.S. Senate,
said Lingle’s actions were “extremely insensitive and disrespectful.”
