Beautiful Thing--a Fundraiser for Denver Element

Beautiful Thing, playing May 2-11 at Crossroads Theater,  is about two high school boys who are friends and neighbors living in a low-income housing project, and who discover that they are attracted to one another. Their journey to self-discovery and acceptance is not easy – as it almost never is when young gay men come out – but their journey is compounded by the poverty of their environment and the “roughness” of family and society. As the play progresses, and the two young men begin to fall in love, we are reminded that love in any circumstance is hard and funny and awkward and confusing … and that it’s about a lot more than just sex. As these two young men brave the ignorance and stigma of those around them, we also remember that love is a Beautiful Thing. The play is loving, touching and funny … and is very relevant to today’s youth and the struggles they face in their own coming out process and learn to love themselves – and others.

The Denver ELEMENT is a HIV prevention/education/outreach program for gay/bi men in the Denver metro area, and is a program of Mile High Council. Denver PIQUE is ELEMENT’s program for gay/bi men ages 18-24. This population has the highest rate of HIV infection in the US. Our goal is to provide strong and empowering social networks that will provide support for program participants so that they are able to make stronger, healthier, and more informed choices around sexual behavior and risk reduction options – which will result in lower HIV infection rates.
