On this historic day I can’t help but think of how important my marriage to my wife is to us and our daughter. Our wedding day was joyous, loving, and brought us a deep sense of security.
I share in the optimism that the Supreme Court will do the right thing by finally ensuring all Americans have the freedom to marry. I salute our colleagues in the legal and advocacy communities who have worked tirelessly for years to change hearts and minds about the importance of our our relationships and commitments. Equality Federation Member groups from Maine to Oregon have logged countless hours of hard work defending equality in their states and elevating the real life stories of our families and the importance of our relationships. It is because of the dedication of so many people that now a majority of Americans support the freedom to marry and believe discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people is wrong. Now, it’s time for the law to align with public opinion.
While the freedom to marry is on the horizon, we are reminded that our efforts to eradicate discrimination are far from over. Over 100 anti-LGBT pieces of legislation were filed in legislatures across the country so far in 2015 and in many places there aren’t statewide laws protecting LGBT people from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.
