Cats returns to Denver

'Cats' returns to Denver's Buell Theatre this Wednesday, January 13 at 8 p.m.

I can't believe that in all my years I've never seen this show.

Word on the street is that there’s no better way to introduce your family and friends - or a reluctant date - to the wonders of live theatre than with the magic, the mystery, the memory of 'Cats'- one of the longest running shows in Broadway’s history.

The winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, 'Cats' features 20 of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless melodies, including the hit song, “Memory.”

Denver Center Attactions announces Cats and Fiddler on the Roof

Denver Center Attractions has announced two shows that will visit Denver next year as added attractions. The legendary Broadway musical CATS will prowl The Buell Theatre stage January 13-17, and the family classic FIDDLER ON THE ROOF will play The Ellie Caulkins Opera House May 18-23. Single tickets are not available at this time; on-sale information will be announced at a later date. However, DCA 2010 subscribers will receive priority access to purchase tickets to these shows prior to the general public.

More information after the jump.

CATS, the show that revolutionized musical theatre, will play The Buell Theatre January 13-17. With original direction by Trevor Nunn and choreography by Gillian Lynne this is the CATS credited with the British invasion of Broadway, and the only production in North America sanctioned by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Now in its 27th year, the national tour of CATS is the longest continuously touring Broadway musical in history.

Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, and with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS won seven 1983 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting and Best Costumes. The production played 21 years in London’s West End and 18 years on Broadway.

The Tony Award-winning production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF will play The Ellie Caulkins Opera House May 18-23, offering the once in a lifetime opportunity to see Chaim Topol, the man who made the role of Tevye famous in the 1972 Oscar-nominated film. Topol was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for his performance in that film. In 1983, he reprised the role of Tevye in a London stage revival and in 1990 he again played the part in a Broadway revival, and was nominated for a Tony Award for that performance.

In 1965 Jerome Robbins won matching Tony Awards for his direction and choreography of Broadway’s FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. In this national tour, both are faithfully recreated by director Sammy Dallas Bayes, choreographer of the Broadway revival.

Based on the timeless stories of Sholom Aleichem, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has been heralded as one of the great masterpieces in American musical theatre, weaving music, dance, poignancy and laughter into an electrifying and unforgettable experience. Tevye’s wrestling with the new customs of a younger generation is punctuated by an unforgettable score that weaves the haunting strains of “Sunrise, Sunset” and the rousing “If I Were A Rich Man” with the exuberant “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and triumphant “Tradition.” For more information about FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, visit www.fiddlerontour.com.
