Tony Perkins: Parents shouldn’t condone homosexuality

Tony Perkins, president of the anti-gay Family Research Council, said last week that while parents should not disown their gay and lesbian children, they should also not enable and condone homosexual behavior

"If we really love them, we’ll be willing to tell them the truth that the choices that they have made, continuing what they’re doing, are both destructive to them personally and society as a whole," Perkins said at the National Press Club. A Human Rights Campaign spokesperson denounced the comments as "lies."

Does Family Research Council deserve "hate group" designation?

Although the Family Research Council is angry over its inclusion on a hate-groups list published by the Southern Poverty Law Center, columnist Tim Rutten argues that the organization has earned the designation because it has gone beyond simply expressing its views about homosexuality.

"It is perfectly possible for a church or an organization associated with a denomination or religious tendency -- as the Family Research Council is with evangelical Protestantism -- to oppose, say, marriage equality as a departure from tradition and traditional notions of civic virtue without defaming gays and lesbians as a group," Rutten writes.

Family Research Council asks Sen. Cornyn to skip Log Cabin event

Tony Perkins, head of the anti-gay Family Research Council, has asked Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas (pictured), to reverse course and refuse an invitation to appear at a fundraiser for the Log Cabin Republicans.

"In deference to the work you have done against the debasement of our culture, I would ask respectfully that you withdraw from attending the event," Perkins wrote to Cornyn.
