New York Giants' Michael Strahan is a New Yorker for Marriage Equality


Michael Strahan, the record setting former defensive end of the New York Giants, has filmed a video with his fiancĂ©e for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, as part of the group’s New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign.  In the video, the Strahan feels “it’s unfair to keep committed couples from getting married.”   The campaign, which raises the public profile of marriage equality in New York, can be viewed online at www.hrc.org/NY4marriage.

NBA Legend Steve Nash is a New Yorker for Marriage Equality

Daphne Rubin-Vega is a New Yorker for Marriage Equality


Check out the latest videos in the “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign, which feature Broadway actress Daphne Rubin-Vega. The release includes the first Spanish language video in the series. The campaign which raises the public profile of marriage equality in the Empire State can be viewed online at www.hrc.org/NY4marriage.
 
“With pro-equality gains in the legislature and a Governor-elect ready to sign a marriage bill into law, New York can be on the leading edge of fairness for all families,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “We’re particularly excited to highlight a high-profile, Spanish-speaking New Yorker who will spur fair-minded citizens to make their voices heard on this critical equality issue. Everyone needs to be heard in the fight for equality.”
 
The campaign is centered on video testimonials from New Yorkers who support the right of same-sex couples to marry. The ads will run online with possible placement elsewhere when the legislative fight for marriage equality heats up in Albany.
 
To date, HRC has released videos from Daphne Rubin-Vega, actors Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, actress Fran Drescher, Moby, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, actress Julianne Moore and designer Kenneth Cole – and more will follow in the coming weeks and months.
 
An equal marriage bill failed last year by eight votes in the New York state Senate despite having the support of the Governor and being passed in the Assembly. HRC’s Campaign for New York Marriage worked to defeat Senators who voted against equality and helped elect fair-minded leaders including Senators-elect Tony Avella, David Carlucci and Tim Kennedy.

Mayor Bloomberg is a New Yorker for Marriage Equality


Today the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – released the fourth video of the “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign, which features Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The campaign raises the public profile of marriage equality in the Empire State leading into this fall’s elections and next year’s anticipated legislative action. “I believe that people have a right to marry anybody they want and it isn’t the government’s business to be involved in that choice,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “This is as basic a right as any other. I am glad to be a part of this campaign and support marriage equality.”

“We are honored to have Mayor Bloomberg speaking out on behalf of the millions of New Yorkers who support marriage equality,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “With New York poised to be on the leading edge of marriage equality, the Mayor is providing leadership on this critical equal rights issue of our time.”
